Surgical robot officially revealed
Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci Xi has four surgical arms operated by highly sensitive controls.
The machine has been in use at HSC since at least February. It is currently being used for thoracic surgery (usually lung and esophageal procedures). gynecologic cancer surgery and urology. It allows surgeons to reach parts of the anatomy that aren't easily accessible with traditional surgical instruments.
'The da Vinci Xi, in essence, extends the capabilities of a surgeon's hands and a surgeon's eyes. The robot's arms move better and with more stability than is possible for human hands; and the enhanced scopes and visualization technology helps us see even the smallest parts of the anatomy with extreme clarity,' Dr. Edward Buchel, HSC's surgery site director, said in a written announcement posted on the foundation's website.
The machine was funded by the Health Sciences Centre Foundation's Operation Excellence campaign, in partnership with the province.
'Acquiring Manitoba's first surgical robot is a major milestone for patient care,' foundation CEO Jonathon Lyon said in the announcement.
'The robot is a shining example of how new technology can help us achieve our goals to end surgical wait times. With the robot, patients will experience less pain, less blood loss and lower risks of complications. And because patients treated with the robot are typically discharged from the hospital in a day or two, we'll see better patient flow, a reduced burden on the emergency department and an increase in in-patient bed availability.'
An Ji Li, a 33-year-old thoracic patient, suddenly began coughing up blood in December. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent robotic surgery at HSC in February. He was discharged the next day.
'When you hear the word 'cancer,' everything stops. But knowing I had access to this technology gave me real hope,' Li said.

Measles exposure at HSC Children's Hospital: province
The Manitoba government is warning the public about a new measles exposure in the province. In the latest bulletin Monday, the province said there was an exposure in the Children's Hospital emergency department waiting room at HSC on June 29. The exposure happened between 3:45 p.m. and 6:05 p.m. Anyone who was there is told to monitor for symptoms until July 21. Symptoms for measles can appear between seven and 21 days and include a fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability and red eyes. Small white dots can appear inside the person's mouth as well. After the first symptoms, people can develop a red, blotchy rash. If symptoms do develop, people are told to isolate at home and contact their health-care provider. As of June 21, there have been 108 cases of measles in Manitoba with 17 cases in June, plus eight probable cases.

Is ISRG's Procedure Growth Enough to Offset Margin Pressures in 2025?
Intuitive Surgical ISRG entered 2025 with strong operational momentum, delivering 17% year-over-year growth in da Vinci procedures and a 19% rise in total revenues (to $2.25 billion) in the first quarter. Notably, day-adjusted procedure growth reached 18.5%, causing management to raise full-year guidance to 15-17%. This growth was supported by robust adoption in general surgery in the United States and accelerated utilization in emerging markets like India, Korea and the United Kingdom. The rollout of the da Vinci 5 platform continued at pace, with 147 new systems placed and over 32,000 procedures completed using the new-generation robot. However, this clinical and procedural strength faces growing financial headwinds. Gross margins declined to 66.4% in the first quarter from 67.6% a year ago due to increased depreciation, a higher mix of lower-margin platforms like Ion and da Vinci 5, and emerging cost pressures from newly implemented global tariffs. ISRG now expects tariff-driven cost of sales to erode margins by approximately 170 basis points for the full year, revising its gross margin forecast to 65-66.5%. While recurring revenues remain strong, representing 85% of the total revenues, capital expenditures, manufacturing investments and rising input costs may challenge operating leverage in the near term. Moreover, constrained hospital budgets in key markets like Germany and Japan could tamper the company's capital placement run rate, adding another layer of margin pressure. Intuitive Surgical's solid procedure growth and market adoption are commendable, but they will be tested against a backdrop of tightening margins, macroeconomic headwinds and evolving trade dynamics. Investors should watch closely whether strong volume momentum can continue to outrun inflationary and structural cost drags in the quarters ahead. Improving Margin for ISRG's Rivals In the first quarter of 2025, Stryker SYK posted strong financials, with organic sales growth of 10.1% and total revenues reaching $5.87 billion, reflecting an 11.9% year-over-year rise. This was driven by robust demand across MedSurg & Neurotechnology and Orthopaedics segments, including standout growth in trauma and extremities, and expanding Mako installations. Stryker's adjusted gross margin was 65.5%, up 190 basis points year over year, aided by manufacturing efficiencies, favorable pricing and product mix. Despite a $200 million tariff headwind expected for the year, Stryker maintained operating margin expansion of 100 basis points, reflecting strong cost control and operational leverage. In contrast, Medtronic MDT reported 3.9% year-over-year revenue growth in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 (to $8.93 billion), with strength in Cardiovascular (up 22% in cardiac ablation), Neuroscience, and Diabetes offsetting surgical headwinds. Medtronic's gross margin improved to 64.7% (up 19 basis points) and operating margin rose to 26.6%, buoyed by pricing strategies and cost-of-goods-sold productivity gains. However, growth remained uneven across Medtronic's portfolios. But, it is still lower than its five-year median of 72.17. ISRG carries a Value Score of D. Officially, Father's Day took place earlier this month, but for William S. Gardner, K.C., every day is Father's Day-especially when he wears his HSC Foundation hat. 'HSC is in my DNA,' says Gardner, who has served on the Foundation Board since 2002, including a stint as Vice Chair. 'My dad and my grandfather cared deeply about health care, and so do I.' Dr. William Arthur Gardner (upper right), William Cooper Gardner, Q.C. (just below, in sunglasses), and William Sparling Gardner (below, in short-sleeved green shirt, around the age of 13): "They were both so instrumental in my life," says Gardner of his father and grandfather. Gardner's grandfather, Dr. William A. Gardner, was an orthopedic surgeon at the Winnipeg General Hospital which merged with other institutions to form HSC in 1973. Gardner's father, William C. Gardner, Q.C., served as the Founding Chair of the HSC Foundation. 'They were both so instrumental in my life,' says Gardner. 'I remember at the age of five going with my grandfather on house calls. And he used to tell me stories about his service as a surgeon on the western front in France in World War I.' Gardner's father saw action in the Second World War. After his ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Denmark Strait, he survived enemy fire and icy waters, staying afloat by clinging onto pieces of the wreckage. Many years later, he chaired the Winnipeg General Hospital Board before founding the HSC Foundation in 1976. Gardner: "HSC is in my DNA. My dad and my grandfather cared deeply about health care, and so do I." 'My dad and others realized that donors could step forward to keep the hospital moving forward,' says Gardner. 'That's even more true today. As Manitobans, we can make sure that the hospital is equipped to take care of our loved ones for many years to come.'
