The Wiz brings magic to Fort Worth for the first time during 50th anniversary tour
"I mean, like I always say, this show is the star," said Elijah Ahmad Lewis, who plays the Scarecrow. "For it being around for 50 years… that says everything."
First premiering on Broadway in 1975, "The Wiz" follows the familiar storyline of "The Wizard of Oz," but now with a fresh, modern twist to meet today's audiences where they are.
"There are a lot of new things in our culture now that are incorporated into this show, just to bring it to where it is," Lewis said.
But through all the laughter and music, the heart of the story remains unchanged.
"Overall, the story is about finding your way home," said Lewis. "The subliminal message is knowing where you are and finding your center and knowing that home is always where the heart is, and where you always land."
Cal Mitchell, who plays the Lion, grew up watching the movie version of "The Wiz" countless times.
"We wore that VHS out! I mean, out!" Mitchell said. "Watching that movie for so long growing up, and not realizing there was this thin line of connection happening, was crazy."
Lewis said his character's journey is one that everyone can relate to.
"The Scarecrow believed what someone else told him, that he didn't have a brain… even though he had it all along. That's something we all go through," he said.
Both actors said performing the show for the first time in Fort Worth, especially on its 50th anniversary, feels particularly meaningful.
And if you need one more reason to grab a ticket? They say it's a great way to beat the Texas heat.
"The theater is air-conditioned!" Mitchell said. "It's very lovely. And there's a cast here that truly has such heart and love for this show."
"The Wiz" is currently playing at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth.
Producers have also announced a digital lottery for the Fort Worth run, powered by Broadway Direct.
Fans can enter the lottery the day before each performance from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning July 14 for the opening night performance on July 15.
Winners will be notified by email and have the opportunity to purchase up to two tickets for $39 each. Tickets must be purchased within 60 minutes of notification, or the opportunity will be forfeited. The lottery will continue daily through the final performance on July 20.

We Finally Know How Much Martin Shkreli Charged for That Wu-Tang Clan Album
The saga of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, the one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album that Martin 'pharma bro' Shkreli bought for approximately $2 million in 2015, continues. The album's contents have always been a highly guarded secret, and it was seized by the U.S. government in 2018 after Shkreli was convicted of securities fraud. For years, it was reported that the government had sold the album directly to PleaserDAO, a crypto collective that specializes in NFTs. However, Bloomberg now reports that this was not the case. According to new FOIA documents, the government actually sold the album off to another company before PleaserDAO acquired it in 2021. Bloomberg sued the Justice Department for more information on the heavily redacted case, and the government has finally revealed the buyer's identity. WTC Endeavours Limited, which was set up for the express purpose of purchasing the album in 2020, was incorporated in Hong Kong. The company was dissolved some two years after the album was purchased by PleaserDAO in 2023. Bloomberg writes that WTC Endeavors purchased the album from the U.S. government for $2,238,482.30, which was the amount that Shkreli owed the government at the time. PleaserDAO then subsequently procured the album through crypto payments equivalent to $4 million. 'The DOJ made it clear to my FOIA attorney that PleasrDAO wasn't connected in any way to the corporate entity or the individual who purchased the album,' Bloomberg writes. Not a whole lot of information is available about WTC Endeavors, and Leopold notes that the names of the officers affiliated with the company 'don't appear to be well known.' Shkreli, formerly the CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, is best known for having bought and jacked up the price of Daraprim, an anti-parasitic drug that saves lives, by 5,000 percent. Shkreli subsequently became the face of the pharmaceutical industry's sociopathic price-gouging and has been notorious ever since. He went to prison for securities fraud in 2018. A thoroughly ridiculous individual, Shkreli subsequently managed to seduce a journalist while in prison, who left her husband for him. Since getting out of prison, Shkreli and the journalist have parted ways, and Shkreli is now thoroughly entrenched in the cryptocurrency community, which is probably where he belonged all along. Once Upon a Time in Shaolin is a 31-track album that was developed by Wu-Tang over a long period and sold with the legal stipulation that it couldn't be commercially released until the year 2103. For a majority of us peons, its contents remain a mystery, although if you get invited to the right party, you have a chance at catching some of its tracks.

James Gunn and DC Haven't Started Casting Wonder Woman… Yet
The holy trilogy of James Gunn's DC Universe is slowly coming together. Part one, of course, is Superman, which is now in theaters. A Batman movie is being written (in addition to Matt Reeves' new Batman movie), and, of late, there's been lots of talk about Wonder Woman too. As co-president of DC Studios, Gunn recently confirmed a Wonder Woman script is being written, and subsequent rumors suggested the film was being fast-tracked. Well, that's partially true, Gunn said. 'It's a priority, but I wouldn't call that fast-tracked,' Gunn wrote on Threads recently. 'Nothing is going to be shot unless we're as sure as we can be that the script is good.' That's been Gunn and partner Peter Safran's mantra since day one. Don't make, or announce, a movie unless the script is good enough that it will actually be made. It's also why Superman's end credit scenes don't tease anything. Gunn wants to only make or talk about movies that are happening. That also informed another recent rumor. Buzz started that Gunn and company were looking for an actress with a primarily TV background to play Wonder Woman, which is in line with their casting of House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock as Supergirl. But, again, Gunn says that's completely untrue. 'I'd never in a million years look for a major role based on whether they did TV, films, or whatever,' Gunn said. 'It's all about the casting. I didn't cast Milly because of her past, but because she was the best one for the role. (But we're also not casting WW, nor even discussing it, until a script is finished).' So there you have it. The Wonder Woman script isn't finished, and until it is, there won't be casting. The same goes for Batman. Now, surely everyone at Warner Bros., Gunn included, would love to have new Batman and Wonder Woman films in theaters tomorrow.
