‘They stole it from us': How Spain can reclaim their moment after Luis Rubiales scandal

Yahoo3 days ago
When the England team left the pitch after their last match against Spain, a 2-1 comeback defeat in June's Nations League fixture, there was one overriding feeling in the dressing room. 'They're just so hard to play against', was one exhausted view.
Spain's ideology means they're seen as an almost singular challenge in the women's game. The England players enjoy the test, admire the players as icons, and know the world champions are the team to beat.
Spanish manager Montse Tome has still rejected the description of favourites, in that way that coaches do to try and get elite teams playing as if they are starting from scratch again. Many of Spain's world champions would actually like to start from scratch in a different sense. This singular team want their own singular victory, independent of past troubles.
If it seems unfair on this historic squad for their 2023 World Cup win to always be clouded by the Luis Rubiales case, such talk is only in-keeping with the sentiments of the players themselves. Many of them speak about it in a brilliant new Netflix documentary about the story, called "Se Acabo" - 'It's over: the kiss that changed Spanish football'.
Ballon d'Or holder Aitana Bonmati goes as far as saying, 'Our World Cup win was overshadowed and, well, tarnished'. Ivana Andres adds, 'They stole it from us', before a striking revelation from Jenni Hermoso, the legend subjected to the Rubiales kiss. She admits there were flickers where she would think, 'Holy sh--, I'm a world champion', only to check herself. 'That feeling only lasts a second as I can't relive that moment,' Hermoso says.
She won't get to relive any victory in Switzerland, as she has been controversially omitted from the squad, so won't get to see the many changes either.
Even in the weeks before that Rubiales scandal, some of the players found circumstances so bad at the World Cup that they still can't quite understand how they won it. Bonmati admits they were asking themselves, 'How is that possible?'
The contrast to the men is made explicit, as the documentary reveals remarkable messages from former captain Sergio Ramos asking Rubiales for Hublot watches. The women simply wanted flight times that could allow a decent night's sleep before big games.
It is why there is now talk of a 'special spirit' around Euro 2025, all the more so because of the contrasts with the last Euros. That 2022 tournament in England is seen as another nadir, given how the squad's complaints ultimately led to the landmark moment of 'las 15'. They were the 15 players who withdrew from selection two months later, after raising concerns over how standards in Jorge Vilda's squad could be significantly improved to allow them to fulfil their potential. The downbeat mood, and failure to get beyond the quarter-finals, felt all the more inevitable due to the injury to Alexia Putellas on the eve of the tournament.
There was a worrying echo of this on the eve of Euro 2025, when Aitana was last week sent to hospital with viral meningitis. Some around the squad couldn't help feel deja vu.
And yet it is maybe another sign of how fortunes have changed that Aitana was out of hospital and back with the squad by Tuesday. 'Everything's going well,' Bonmati said.
The words around Spain's Lausanne camp now are 'tranquility' and 'stability'. Conditions have also changed, to go with the fact the team now play with the assurance that comes from true achievement. They've been there and done it, and that through hugely difficult circumstances.
Now, the squad just don't have the same distractions. Many players finally feel standards have started to be elevated to club levels, as well as those of the men.
'Everything has changed radically in terms of conditions, trips, nutrition and training,' Putellas told Marca. 'Everything we need to be the best. It's at the level of a top men's team. It's something incredible, that took a lot of work from many people.'
Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey speaks of how, 'It's a more professional atmosphere, with better preparation, where they listen to us and ask what we need'.
Amanda Gutierrez, the president of the Futpro union that worked with the players through the Rubiales case, still points out that changes have been 'gradual'. Duly, you probably can't go through ructions like that without some remnants of the past persisting. The omission of Hermoso has raised some old issues, as well as new questions for the coach, Tome.
She had been Vilda's assistant at the 2023 World Cup, only to quickly become his successor in the overhaul after the Rubiales case. That decision was hardly praised, even though players had previously seen her as a confidante. Some felt she 'changed', with her appointment viewed as a continuation of the old regime.
When Rubiales gave his infamous speech refusing to resign, Tome is seen beside Vilda applauding. In 'Se Acabo', one of the 15, Lola Gallardo, describes that moment as Vilda and Tome 'selling out their players again'.
It doesn't help that, like Vilda, Tome isn't considered a coach of sufficient quality. She won the inaugural Women's Nations League months after the 2023 World Cup, but the fourth place at the 2024 Olympics was considered a failure. Hermoso even seemed to criticise Tome's abilities in a social media post, stating: 'Manage? That's what others should learn to do, that part is too big for them.'
Hermoso added that she 'also has a very clear conscience', referencing Tome's own words about the decision. The manager had insisted it was purely for football reasons, although suspicion reigns.
For Tome's part, other players from 'the 15' have been picked, and Hermoso is now 35 years old. There are fair arguments about whether she is still at the same level, especially against a pool overflowing with talent.
Tome looked at 70 players, all amplified by that ingrained ideology. The manager told AS she did what was best 'for the squad, not what is best for Montse'.
Hermoso still finished her post with a flourish, saying to let Tome 'focus now on making Spain European champions, although they would also do it on their own and surely much better'.
As sharp as that sounds, many would agree. It's what happened in 2023. Spain possess such quality that they only need the most basic guidance.
The sense of flow is illustrated by how, less than two years after the World Cup, only 11 of the 23-players quad remain. Members of 'the 15' in Patri Guijarro and Claudia Pina have meanwhile returned, ready to attack Euro 2025 with a new relish.
Their sense of new opportunity amplifies that of the squad. In 'Se Acabo', the players openly talk about how the changes caused by the 2023 World Cup were a greater victory than the trophy.
They have now given themselves the platform for a purely sporting victory. Mariona says the camp is now about 'football, only football', as Putellas offered a touching message on the eve of the tournament: 'Now it's time to enjoy, compete and give happiness.' Maybe not to the opposition.

Christian Totti, Son of Italy Legend Francesco Totti, Retires at 19

Pressures of famous surname push young striker to early retirement from football Christian Totti, Son of Italy Legend Francesco Totti, Retires at 19 In a shocking development, Christian Totti son of AS Roma legend Francesco Totti has officially announced his retirement from football at just 19 years old. "Enough is enough" - A career cut short Italian newspaper La Nuova broke the news with the headline: "Enough! I'm quitting football" When contacted, Christian confirmed: "I can't say much. Yes I've retired. It's decision I've made". The young forward reportedly struggled for years under the weight of his father's legendary status which brought constant pressure, high expectations and intense media scrutiny. Unfulfilled journey across multiple clubs Christian began his youth career with AS Roma's U17 team but saw limited minutes , just 15 minute across two U18 appearances. He later moved to Frosinone Primavera, scoring once in 4 match before brief stint at Rayo Vallecano in Spain in early 2024. His most recent experiences included short spells with Avezzano & Olbia in Italy's 4th division. However recurring media criticism and online chatter about his fitness led him to distance himself from the game altogether. Italian journalist Paolo Ardovino dismissed criticism of the young Totti's physical condition, stating: "He's always been naturally fit like most professional players" Former coach Marco Amelia who worked with him at Frosinone, added: "He'd the potential to build great career if given more minutes in lower tier teams. But his father's name weighed heavily on him" A new path: nurturing future talent Christian won't leave football completely. He'll now work at his father's football academy, run by Francesco's brother Riccardo Tott alongside general manager Claudio Dolis focusing on scouting and developing young talents.

10 best new Netflix shows to watch this summer

Although Netflix came to prominence in large part because it had an archive of preexisting shows that you wanted to watch, the streaming service has spent years ensuring that its original library is robust. If you're looking for something new on Netflix, you've got plenty of options. To celebrate the year that the streamer has already had, we picked the 10 best new shows (meaning they started in 2025) that you can watch on the streaming service this summer. Check them out below: The Hunting Wives (2025-) Pulpy, fun, and the perfect binge-watch for the laziest days of summer, The Hunting Wives tells the story of a big-city woman who moves to rural Texas and finds herself falling under the influence of a wealthy socialite. Recommended Videos As she learns more about the world in which her friend operates, she begins to realize that these wealthy women are all hiding secrets from one another. Starring Brittany Snow and Malin Ackerman, The Hunting Wives is not all that serious, which is partly why the show is a good time. You can watch The Hunting Wives on Netflix. Too Much (2025-) Lena Dunham's long-awaited follow-up to Girls, Too Much is just as smart and incisive as that show, and no less funny. Although this show doesn't star Dunham, it very much feels like a pseudo-sequel to Girls. The series follows a New York City workaholic who moves to London to take a job and live in isolation. When she finds herself bewitched by an unproblematic man, she dives deeper and deeper into a relationship that can only end badly. Too Much might be too much for some, but for most, it's a sharp, witty comedy about people who can't get out of their own way. You can watch Too Much on Netflix. Sakamoto Days (2025-) Adapted from a manga of the same name, Sakamoto Days is a brilliant new anime series about a hitman who makes the choice to retire for love, only to find that he can't leave his past as far behind as he might have hoped. The contrast between the central character's quiet family life and the things he has to do to maintain it gives Sakamoto Days much of its juice, but the show's pacing is excellent. Its willingness to shift from mundane to thrillingly violent in an instant is guaranteed to keep you on your toes. You can watch Sakamoto Days on Netflix. Adolescence (2025) Adolescence was a major hit for Netflix, but if you haven't caught this four-part miniseries yet, it's certainly worth your time. The show follows the aftermath of a teenage boy's arrest for the murder of one of his classmates. Across the four episodes, we learn more about the kid, his school, his family, and the detectives investigating the crime. Although it can be a harrowing watch for anyone trying to raise kids in the world we're living in, Adolescence is also a show that dares to ask questions without easy answers and leaves you to sit with every unsettling detail. You can watch Adolescence on Netflix. Dept. Q (2025-) Anchored by a brilliant central performance from Matthew Goode, Dept. Q is one of the most heralded new series that Netflix has released this year. The show follows a detective who is coming back to work following an incident that paralyzed his partner and killed another cop. Wracked by guilt, he's tasked with solving a cold case that slowly envelopes his entire life. While the idea of obsession in detective work is not exactly new, Goode breathes new life into his character. While Dept. Q can be dark, that doesn't mean it's particularly hard to watch. You can watch Dept. Q on Netflix. Everybody's Live with John Mulaney (2025-) Netflix has largely avoided making its own version of a late-night talk show until Everybody's Live with John Mulaney. The series, while technically a late-night show, is much weirder than what you might expect from network alternatives. Mulaney is willing to experiment and willing to make his audience and his guests a little bit uncomfortable in the process. The show is wildly funny, but part of the joy of watching is the show's unpredictability, even if that means that not every moment or bit is perfect. You can watch Everybody's Live with John Mulaney on Netflix. Sirens (2025-) Another soapy, insanely fun show to make its debut on Netflix this year, Sirens follows two sisters who have taken wildly divergent paths through life as they reunite. When one discovers that the other has become the personal assistant of a hugely wealthy and slightly deranged woman, she begins to suspect that their relationship is not a healthy one. Anchored by a trio of great performances from Megahnn Fahey, Milly Alcock, and Julianne Moore, Sirens features some beautiful sets and locations and also manages to be a fairly sharp satire of a particular kind of wealthy person. You can watch Sirens on Netflix. Forever (2025-) Sometimes all you need in a compelling TV show is two young actors with remarkable chemistry. Forever has a relatively simple premise. It follows two former childhood friends who reunite as teenagers and fall heartbreakingly, desperately in love with one another. As they realize that being in love is not enough to make their lives any easier, they deal with all the heartache and yearning that comes with any first love. Forever would be nothing without its central performers, Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr., who make every scene they share sing. You can watch Forever on Netflix. The Residence (2025-) Uzo Aduba has been making her bones on Netflix since the streamer first launched original comedies, and with The Residence, she finally gets the chance to lead her own show. In the series, she plays an eccentric detective called to the White House to solve a murder that occurred at a state dinner. Although the show could be too political, The Residence manages to keep a rather light tone. It's a careful and impressive balancing act. You can watch The Residence on Netflix. Apple Cider Vinegar (2025-) Based on a strange, frightening true story, Apple Cider Vinegar tells the story of two women who, in parallel, begin selling their millions of followers on alternative medicine, even as they begin to realize that what they're selling doesn't work the way they say it does. Anchored by another brilliant performance from Kaitlyn Dever, Apple Cider Vinegar is an unsettling story about the very idea of wellness and why so many people are looking for alternative remedies. You can watch Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix.

The familiar issues frustrating England and their fans

If a bad team plays badly, it does not hurt so much. When a team that can be great gets thrashed, those are the ones that really cause pain. And that is why Ben Stokes' England Test team are stuck in this cycle of frustration. From the sensational win at Headingley last week, to a thrashing in the second Test in Birmingham. Whenever England take two steps forward, there is always a defeat that knocks them back. It is familiar issues which are hurting them too... England swept aside as India level series at 1-1 McCullum admits England mistake with Edgbaston toss England v India: England hammered in first India win at Edgbaston Another thumping defeat As England's fate was sealed on day five, Edgbaston was alive to the beat of an Indian drum. "England get battered everywhere they go," sang the tourists' support. This 336-run defeat can be added to the 423-run loss in Hamilton, the nine-wicket thrashing in Rawalpindi, the meek eight-wicket loss at the hands of a poor Sri Lanka at The Oval or the 434-run thrashing by India in Rajkot last February. When England lose, they lose badly. Two of those, against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, could be written off as dead rubbers. Were the list shorter, you could put them down to the odd bad day. But until the trend of one England hammering a series is ruled out, they are not going to get to where they want to go. Series wins could come - they may beat India over five matches here - but some have been talking about this team going on to become the best England side since the one Andrew Strauss led to the top of the world rankings. Head coach Brendon McCullum told his team to "shoot for the stars" at the start of the summer. Fail to change and their ship may not leave Earth's atmosphere. England's Pope fasts again No-one represents England's feast or famine better than Ollie Pope. After a fine century in Leeds, he made a duck and 24 in his two innings at Edgbaston. It is a familiar problem for a batter who did not make a fifty in the four Tests in India at the start of last year after his epic 196 in the first Test. Before play on day five he was working with batting coach Marcus Trescothick on his head position, attempting to prevent himself falling to the off side before contact, as he did when edging Akash Deep in the first innings. With its slope, Lord's is not the ideal place to have such issues. Zak Crawley is another batter unable to break free of his own troubles. His 65 in the first Test, which followed 124 against Zimbabwe, was crucial to England's win but his wild drive in the second over of England's chase was the worst dismissal in an otherwise sensible quest for a draw. He is averaging just 21 when seamers pitch the ball up to him since the start of 2022. If India weren't aware of that weakness before, they are now. What to do about Bashir? The Test also resulted in some ugly numbers for England spinner Shoaib Bashir. The 21-year-old's match figures of 5-286 are the most expensive for England since 1950 and the third-most costly in his side's Test history. No Test spinner who has bowled as many overs (679.1) as Bashir has as high an economy rate (3.80). Not pretty. England's Bashir experiment is at an interesting phase. Picked for his debut last year after just 10 first-class matches and still unable to get a game for his county, he has been picked on potential. Against Zimbabwe at the start of the summer, he looked to be finding success by bowling tighter to the stumps, resulting in a more accurate line, while he was also bowling a fuller length. He deserves credit for working on a 'carrom ball' – an off-spinner's mystery delivery which is flicked from the hand and turns from right to left – which he bowled at least three times in the first innings. But six of his eight wickets in this series have come caught in the deep. The others were a lower-order stumping and a top-edged slog he caught himself. Bashir needs a good week in London for himself if nothing else. England's pace pickle That leads nicely to England's pace bowlers. Having opted to pick an unchanged side for Edgbaston, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue have now bowled 82, 77 and 81 overs respectively. Mohammed Siraj is the only India quick to have bowled more than 62. All three of England's pacemen struggled at times in Birmingham. Woakes was not as threatening after his new-ball spell while Tongue has been played well by India's top order and was not as successful against the tail as in the first Test. Change will surely come at Lord's given three days off is little time to recover and Jofra Archer is waiting in the wings. Could England conceivably leave out all three? Gus Atkinson, who has not played since May because of a hamstring injury, is back in the squad but it would be a risk to play Atkinson and Archer, who has bowled in two innings in a match once in four years, in the same XI. Woakes, 36, may need a rest but England like variety in their attack and he averages 12.9 at Lord's – the best of any bowler in Test history. England would also need to replace his batting at number eight if he is left out – even more so if Carse, an able batter, was also absent at number nine. Sam Cook is the Woakes replacement in England's squad but does not offer that same batting depth. Do not rule out bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton adding to his one Test cap, which was earned in 2022. Gill eyeing Bradman's record That it is England with selection problems is a remarkable turnaround from six days ago. India came into the second Test facing endless questions around their XI. Their big calls have been proven right, however. Picking batting all-rounder Washington Sundar at number eight looked a defensive move but he shared an important stand of 144 with his captain, Shubman Gill, in the first innings and had Stokes lbw shortly before lunch with his off-spin on the final day. The other big call was to rest Jasprit Bumrah. His replacement Akash Deep was majestic and took 10 in the match. In truth, Gill could not have asked for a better week. Some questioned his declaration on day four but its timing meant England faced Deep with the new ball late on and again when it was still hard the next morning. The result was two wickets in each spell. With 585 runs in two matches, Gill now needs a further 389 across the remaining three Tests to break the legendary record for most runs in a series set by the great Australian Don Bradman, who made 974 in the 1930 Ashes.
