Yossi Benayoun survives grenade attack on home in Israel

Yahoo08-04-2025
Former Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun has survived a grenade attack on his home in Israel.
The 44-year-old, who also played for West Ham and Chelsea, and his family suffered the ordeal over the weekend.
Benayoun, the former Israel captain, suspects the attack near Tel Aviv was a case of mistaken identity.
Reports say that an individual on a motorbike launched the weapon into the home through the door.
There were no serious injuries following the explosion which caused 'minor damage'.
A police investigation is under way, with Benayoun sure the culprits targeted the wrong address.
'This is definitely a mistake – I have no doubt that the grenade was not aimed at my house,' he said. 'At first I thought it was a gas cylinder explosion and we called the fire department.
'It was only when the police arrived at the house and found the remains of a grenade that we realised what really happened.'
Benayoun, who also played for Arsenal and Queens Park Rangers during a successful spell in England, was recently back at Anfield playing in the Liverpool legends game alongside ex-skipper Steven Gerrard.
He is among the most successful and high-profile Israeli footballers of all-time, making over 200 Premier League appearances during an nine-year spell in England.
Benayoun played for West Ham for two years before making 92 appearances for Liverpool between 2007 and 2010.
He then followed former Anfield team-mate Fernando Torres to Stamford Bridge where he won the Europa League under ex-Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, and also spent time on loan at Arsenal and back at West Ham, before a spell with QPR.
Police in Israel said the grenade incident happened on Sunday night.
A police statement read: 'The police hotline received a report of hearing an explosion outside a house.
'Police from the Glilot station arrived at the scene and began an investigation. As a result of the explosion, damage was caused. There were no casualties.'

Don't worry - Alexander Isak is COMING

Isak unwilling to stay with Newcastle The forward has made it plain he wants to leave St. James' Park this summer. Newcastle were hoping that their star attraction would be willing to sign a new contract - with his current terms extending until 2028. But Isak told the club he is NOT interested in a pay rise - and instead was seeking an immediate exit. Isak did not travel with Eddie Howe's squad for their preseason tour to Asia - citing a minor thigh injury - and has been training at Real Sociedad's facilities while he awaits a move. Don't let this rejection fool you Liverpool of course are right there for Isak - with sporting director Richard Hughes having the striker top of his list of potential recruits. The club are aware it would take a British record fee to land Isak - and right now it might be assumed that Newcastle won't let it happen. But don't let this first rejection fool you. It took Liverpool around FOUR attempts before Bayer Leverkusen were convinced to sell Florian Wirtz. The Germans told Liverpool 'No' time and again until Richard Hughes conjured a bid guaranteeing £100m down and another £16m in add-ons. That deal was never in doubt - despite the rejections. It was just a case of the two sides meeting in the middle. © IMAGO - Alexander Isak Liverpool

Novak Djokovic among investors to buy a stake in second-tier French soccer club Le Mans

LE MANS, France — Novak Djokovic is part of a group of investors who have bought a stake in French second-tier soccer team Le Mans, along with ex-Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen. Le Mans said in a statement that they join other new financial investors into the club, including Latin American sports investment firm OutField and Georgios Frangulis, the founder and chief executive of OakBerry. Frangulis is the boyfriend of three-time women's Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka. 'The uniqueness of this fund also lies in its contribution from high-level athletes,' Le Mans president Thierry Gomez said in the statement. 'Novak Djokovic, Felipe Massa, and Kevin Magnussen will be part of the adventure.' No financial details were given. Djokovic is the owner of a men's record 24 Grand Slam titles in tennis. The 38-year-old Serb has won 100 career titles overall. Massa won 11 races and secured 41 podiums in his F1 career. When driving for Ferrari, the popular Brazilian was within a whisker of winning the 2008 title, only for Lewis Hamilton to beat him in a dramatic finish at the last race. Hamilton won the title by 98 points to 97. The 32-year-old Magnussen drove close to 200 races in F1, securing one podium and one pole position. But the Danish driver was not retained by Haas when his contract expired. Le Mans soccer club, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, begins its league campaign on Aug. 9. Le Mans — a small city in northwestern France — also hosts the famed 24-hour endurance car race.

Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton close to Lyon deal worth around £15 million

Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton is close to securing a move to Lyon for a deal worth around £15 million inclusive of add-ons. The Athletic reported on Tuesday Liverpool had received contact from the Ligue 1 side over a deal for the 22-year-old. Both Liverpool and Morton would be interested in a permanent move. Liverpool turned down interest from Bayer Leverkusen last season, and he has attracted interest from elsewhere in Europe this summer. Advertisement The midfielder was part of England's Under 21 European Championship-winning squad this summer, he has made 13 appearances for the U-21 side. Morton progressed through the Liverpool academy and has made 14 senior appearances for the club. He made five appearances in all competitions last season but did not feature in the Premier League. He spent the 2023-24 on loan in the Championship at Hull City and the previous campaign at fellow second tier side Blackburn Rovers. Analysis by Andy Jones This summer feels like the right time for Morton to move on from Liverpool to get regular game time. There was plenty of interest in the 22-year-old last summer — most notably from Leverkusen who saw an offer of an initial loan with an option to buy rejected — but head coach Arne Slot wanted to keep him for depth purposes. It turned into a frustrating campaign for Morton as the form and fitness of those ahead of him in the midfield pecking order meant he was limited to only five appearances. Morton remained professional throughout and his attitude in training was excellent, but he admitted earlier this year that not playing had been difficult and had dented his confidence. The midfielder is technically gifted, possesses an impressive passing range and he is at the age where he needs regular minutes at senior level. It also suits Liverpool's transfer situation as they have embarked on a significant spending spree this summer — including signing midfielder Florian Wirtz — that is set to continue so Morton is one of the players they can recoup some money for if a permanent deal is agreed.
