Halal exports hit record RM61.79b as Malaysia maintains global leadership, says Tengku Zafrul
He noted that Malaysia has maintained its top position in the Global Islamic Economy Indicator rankings for 10 consecutive years, ahead of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates.
'Malaysia's strength lies in Islamic finance, halal food, as well as media and recreation.
'The halal industry constitutes a significant portion of Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP), with projections estimating a 10.8 per cent contribution or RM231 billion by 2030. This growth is primarily driven by a robust halal ecosystem across sectors such as food, finance, and travel,' he said.
He made these remarks in his officiating speech at the soft launch of the 21st Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) 2025, here yesterday. The speech was delivered by deputy secretary-general (Industry) Datuk Hanafi Sakri.
Tengku Zafrul said the global demand for halal products is currently valued at over US$3 trillion and is expected to grow to US$5 trillion by 2030, underscoring the global appeal of halal's ethical and sustainable attributes.
'Malaysia's leadership in this sector is a testament to our continued innovation and dedication.
'Among the major international halal market players are Nestlé, Allana Group, Cargill Incorporated and Fraser & Neave. I am proud to note that several Malaysian companies such as DagangHalal Group, Prima Quality Food Industries, Kawan Food Bhd, Crescent Foods, QL Foods Sdn Bhd, and Ayamas Food Corporation, are also recognised among the top players globally,' he said.
He highlighted that this year's Mihas theme, 'Pinnacle of Halal Excellence', reflects its standing as the world's leading and most prestigious halal showcase.
'With greater international participation anticipated, Mihas 2025 is set to be larger and more dynamic than previous editions. It will showcase the latest halal products, services, and technologies, highlighting the industry's latest advancements,' he said.
Mihas 2025 is scheduled to take place on Sept 17-20, 2025, at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec).
Tengku Zafrul also stated that halal-related initiatives are part of the Priority Economic Deliverables for 2025 (PEDs), particularly in the context of Malaysia's Asean chairmanship.
'Malaysia is actively promoting the halal industry as a key driver of economic growth and regional cooperation.
'There will be a dedicated pavilion representing Asean's halal industry, as well as a special pavilion for companies from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which is a strategic partner of Asean, featured at Mihas this year,' he shared.
He also noted that Mihas's internationalisation effort debuted in Dubai last year and will continue with an edition in Shanghai this November.
Since its inception in 2004, Mihas has expanded from 500 booths to 2,100 booths in its most recent edition.
'I would like to highlight that the 20th edition of Mihas marked a record-breaking achievement for both the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, recording RM4.3 billion in sales,' he said.
To date, Mihas has generated nearly RM30 billion in export sales and attracted 12,000 local and international halal industry players, along with over 500,000 trade visitors from around the globe.
Additionally, over 7,000 international buyers have been matched with 10,000 Malaysian companies through Mihas's flagship business programme, the International Sourcing Programme (INSP). — Bernama

China's exports of rare earth magnets to the US surge in June
BEIJING: China's exports of rare earth magnets to the United States in June soared to more than seven times their May level, marking a sharp recovery in the flow of critical minerals used in electric vehicles and wind turbines after a Sino-US trade deal. Outbound shipments to the United States from the world's largest producer of rare earth magnets surged to 353 metric tons in June, up 660 per cent from May, data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Sunday. That came after pacts reached in June to resolve issues around shipments of rare earth minerals and magnets to the United States. Chipmaker Nvidia plans to resume sales of its H20 AI chips to China as part of the agreement. China, which provides more than 90 per cent of the global supply of rare earth magnets, decided in early April to add several rare earth items to its export restriction list in retaliation for US tariffs. The subsequent sharp fall in shipments in April and May, due to the lengthy time required to secure export licences, had upset the global supply chain, forcing some automakers outside China to halt partial production due to a rare earths shortage. In total, China exported 3,188 tons of rare earth permanent magnets globally last month, up 157.5 per cent from 1,238 tons in May, although the June volume was still 38.1 per cent lower than the corresponding month in 2024. Shipments of magnets are likely to recover further in July as more exporters obtained licences in June, analysts said. During the first half of 2025, exports of rare earth magnets fell 18.9 per cent on the year to 22,319 tons.

Shanghai metals rise after China vows to shore up industrial growth
SINGAPORE: The most-traded metals contracts on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose on Monday after China's industry ministry last week vowed to stabilise the machinery, autos and electrical equipment sectors. China will roll out action plans to stabilise growth in these industrial sectors, Tao Qing, an official from the ministry, said on Friday. The move is designed to "improve premium supply capacity" to set up the industry for an effective upgrade in quality terms and reasonable growth as measured by quantities, while promoting an "orderly exit of outdated production capacity", Tao added. SHFE zinc gained the most, rising 2.69 per cent to 22,900 yuan (US$3,190.48) a ton as of 0102 GMT. Earlier, the contract hit 22,915 yuan, the highest since May 14. SHFE nickel added 1.25 per cent to 121,750 yuan, aluminium gained 1.17 per cent to 20,745 yuan, lead grew 1.04 per cent to 16,990 yuan, copper rose 0.87 per cent to 78,990 yuan and tin advanced 0.56 per cent to 265,390 yuan. "What China's industrial ministry said has been encouraging for metals in general," a Beijing-based metals analyst at a futures company said, adding, "Industrial sectors are all very relevant to metals." In addition to the downstream industries, the action plan will cover 10 key industries, including steel, nonferrous metals, petrochemicals and construction materials, the ministry noted. "Metals in general have responded positively to the news, and whichever with more room for price growths will strengthen more remarkably," a Shanghai-based metals analyst at a futures company said. On Monday, LME metals fluctuated narrowly, after Friday's surge, with zinc up 0.5 per cent to US$2,832.5 per ton. Earlier in the session, it touched US$2,837, the highest since April 1. LME aluminium rose 0.15 per cent to US$2,633.5, lead gained 0.13 per cent to US$33,490, nickel added 0.11 per cent to US$15,235, while lead eased 0.1 per cent to US$2,008. Copper traded flat at US$9,776.5 after touching US$9,777 on Friday, the highest since July 8.

Malaysia stands firm on national policy amid US tariff talks
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia's stance against external pressure that could weaken national policies, particularly in ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States. He emphasised that while trade and investment ties with the US remain vital, Malaysia maintains a 'red line' in discussions—specifically the Bumiputera policy—which will not be altered despite external perceptions of it being 'discriminatory.' Anwar, who also serves as finance minister, highlighted the need to protect local companies in procurement and business opportunities during negotiations. He stated that Malaysia's approach is measured yet firm to ensure national interests are safeguarded while expanding trade relations with other nations, including China and ASEAN members. 'That is our red line in negotiations (on tariffs), which is why our approach is more careful and firm. We must continue to trade and engage well with all countries, but no country should be allowed to impose conditions that pressure us,' he said during a monthly meeting with Prime Minister's Department (JPM) staff. The prime minister also pointed to his diplomatic engagements with global leaders as a key factor in strengthening Malaysia's economic resilience. His rapport with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has facilitated Petronas' participation in oil exploration and production in Brazil, while Yinson Holdings secured contracts to build oil and gas vessels for Brazilian and Peruvian markets. 'Malaysian companies benefited from these opportunities due to strong diplomatic ties. Expanding trade with BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) helps Malaysia diversify its economic dependencies,' he added. In Egypt, Anwar's relationship with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi led to Proton being granted a production hub role for North Africa, boosting bilateral trade by 34 per cent within a year. - Bernama
