Lower pass percentage brings down Common Entrance Test eligibility in Karnataka

Time of India25-05-2025
Bengaluru: The number of students eligible for admission to courses through the Common Entrance Test (CET) has decreased compared to last year. Minister for higher education MC Sudhakar attributed this to the reduced pass percentage among II pre-university science students.
This year, 2,62,195 students are eligible for engineering courses, compared to over 2.7 lakh last year. Similarly, a little under 2 lakh students are eligible for BNYS (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences), as against almost 2.2 lakh last year. In BSc (Agri), the number is down more than 20,000 to 1.9 lakh.
"The reduction is because the number of students who passed II PU was less than last year. There was a difference of 9,000," said the minister.
In exam 1, in 2024, 2,46,744 students passed in science. This year, the number was 2,31,461.
Seat blocking
Reacting to the seat-blocking scam of CET 2024, Sudhakar said he is yet to go through the chargesheet. "We need to go through the details of the chargesheet. In case we don't find it satisfactory, we will take legal opinion on what can be done next," he said.
TOI had reported that the chargesheet filed by Malleswaram police states the brokers said colleges weren't involved.
The chargesheet states that even though option entries were made, no students were admitted to these seats. While the accused used the credentials of students who excelled in other exams, they said the students were also unaware of the scam.
Janivara controversy
The student who didn't write the maths paper of CET because he wasn't permitted to wear the sacred thread (Janivara) received a rank of 2.06 lakh. He secured around 57% marks in the II PU exam.
He was given the option of writing the paper again or taking the average of marks of his other papers, and he chose the latter.
Spot ranks for those who didn't enter marks
Candidates whose CET 2025 results haven't been announced because of errors in entering their registration number, will be given an opportunity to upload their marks online starting Monday.
Several candidates have submitted representations stating that even though they passed II PUC / class 12 exams, their CET results weren't published.
"It was earlier announced that the II PUC / class 12 marks would be obtained directly from the respective education boards before announcing the CET 2025 results, and candidates were required to enter the correct registration number. However, some failed to enter the correct number, because of which their results couldn't be processed," Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) said in a press release.
From May 26, an online link will be activated for such candidates to submit their II PU / class 12 marks along with the correct registration number and mark sheet. Once KEA verifies and confirms these marks with the respective boards, the candidates will be issued spot ranks starting May 29.
10 Helplines
The number of helplines in KEA was increased from five to 10 last year. The call centres will work from 8am to 8pm.

Many green card holders shelve travel plans after US advisory

Hyderabad: The US Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) recent reminder to all green card holders about carrying proof of their alien registration at all times, has left Indian immigrants anxious. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to TOI, many of them said that despite having valid documents they have shelved their holiday plans or turned down invites to family functions. Some have even put off their work trips, fearing trouble. As per the USCBP's recent advisory, not having an "alien registration or alien registration receipt card" can lead to "misdemeanour and fines" if stopped by federal law enforcement. "I cancelled a trip to Atlanta for my niece's wedding because I didn't want to take a flight and risk being questioned," said an Indian from New York who has been living in the US for over 15 years. "Even though my documents are in order, it's just not worth the stress," he added. Similarly, another immigrant — a resident of Chicago for 10 years — shared how he has called off his trip to Florida for the time being. "I recently secured my green card and I cannot risk anything," he added. More fines in 2025: attorneys Immigration attorneys say that while the law requiring green card holders to carry their registration has been in place for long, under the Immigration and Nationality Act, it has rarely been enforced in the past. "In 2025, there's an uptick in CBP issuing fines, penalising people for not carrying their green cards," said Nicole Gunara, principal immigration attorney at Manifest Law, US. She added: "In Southern California alone the officials have issued fines to 46 individuals for not carrying their green card. This is twice as many as issued in the entire 2024." While families acknowledge the need for regulation, such moves, they say instill fear even among the law-abiding populace. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We came here legally. We pay taxes and contribute to the country's economy. But when you hear things like this, it reminds you how fragile your status is. I've started carrying my green card with me everywhere," said a 54-year-old, living in New Jersey for the last 21 years. Lawyers uphold this practice. "Under the current administration, it's best to always keep your original documents and proofs with you. So far, we have not seen any cases of deportation, but fines/violations are never good. Compliance is everything now," said Gunara. MSID:: 123044976 413 |

MEA slams UK parliament report on transnational repression as ‘baseless'

TOI correspondent from London: India's ministry of external affairs has condemned a UK parliamentary select committee report that names India as one of 12 countries, alongside Russia, China and Iran, as allegedly involved in 'transnational repression' of individuals in Britain as 'baseless' and emanating from 'dubious sources'. Official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday the claims rely 'predominantly' on 'proscribed entities and individuals with a clear documented history of anti-India hostility. The deliberate reliance on discredited sources calls into question the credibility of the report itself.' The report, titled 'Transnational Repression in the UK', was published on Wednesday by the Joint Human Rights Committee, made up of MPs and peers, which consider matters relating to human rights in the UK. Its members include Indian-origin peer Lord Dholakia. Page 6 states: 'Our inquiry received evidence alleging that many states had conducted TNR (transnational repression) activities on UK soil. Multiple evidence submissions accused Bahrain, China, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and UAE of perpetrating TNR in the UK." China, Russia and Iran were highlighted as the 'three most flagrant TNR perpetrators in the UK'. Written evidence submitted to the committee was also published. Those commenting on India include Sikhs for Justice, Dhal Khalsa UK, Sikh Federation UK, and the Sikh Press Association. The report said that the number of state-threat investigations run by MI5 had jumped by 48% in the last year and made recommendations on how the UK should tackle TNR, such as sanctioning perpetrators, expelling diplomats, and taking TNR into account when making international trade partnerships. Former UK security minister Tom Tugendhat told TOI: 'This report makes no statement against India. It merely records that evidence was given by a group that has long been hostile to India. As security minister, this conversation on TNR was not a conversation I ever had to have either with the India high commission, or our friends in the Indian govt, or the Indian agencies that we worked with very closely, for the security of all of our people. ' 'The report does not suggest that India is doing it. It just states they received evidence about India. That doesn't mean the committee believes it,' sources told TOI. 'You can refuse to admit the evidence, but the bar for doing that is really high. Sikhs for Justice is not proscribed in the UK.'

35 stone crushers sealed near Ganga in Haridwar after high court order

Haridwar: A stone crushers sealing committee set up by the Haridwar district magistrate following a high court directive, sealed 35 units along the Ganga river in Haridwar and disconnected their electricity supply during sealing operations targeting 48 stone crushers on Friday. The matter came to light when Haridwar-based Matri Sadan, an ashram involved in environmental protection, approached the Nainital high court in 2017 regarding stone crushers operating within five kilometres of the Ganga river, from Raiwala to Bhogpur, raising concerns of rampant quarrying threatening the sustainability of the river. Although the Uttarakhand govt permitted the crushers to operate based on the law department's legal counsel, Matri Sadan contested this decision as "unlawful and unconstitutional" and filed another petition in the high court, which ultimately mandated the sealing of all 48 stone crushing units. They also alleged that the mining lobby could attack its seers and the govt should provide Matri Sadan security, which had been lifted earlier. District mining officer Kazim Raza told TOI, "We sealed 35 stone crushers on Friday and disconnected their electricity connections. We had closed their online portal earlier so they're unable to issue challans. The rest of the stone crushers will be sealed on Saturday." Brahmchari Sudhanand, a seer of Matri Sadan involved in the litigation, said, "All stone crushers lying within five kilometres of the Ganga and other rivers in the district should be closed, as they are the root cause of illegal mining in the rivers. We will put this demand before the court at the next hearing."
