
Wyndham Keen to bring more overseas hotel brands to India

company, is 'as bullish as ever' on India, where all
economic indicators
are 'very positive' for the hospitality sector despite the geopolitical tumult, the chain's president for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Dimitris Manikis, told ET. 'If you had seen some of these geopolitical challenges unfolding 15 years ago, people would have stopped traveling. We haven't seen that today,' he said.

' brands to country. 'We saw a bit of a drop in business here when the
India-Pakistan conflict
unfolded, but that didn't stop Indians from travelling,' Manikis said. 'Indians are travelling more — both domestically and globally — and this country of 1.4 billion will continue to travel.'
He said initial public offerings (IPOs) by hospitality companies are one of the most lucrative in India. 'Ten years ago, that wasn't the case. It shows that the stock markets and investors are very bullish about the sector,' Manikis said.
The alliance between Wyndham and Cygnett is expected to add more than 60 hotels across India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal over the next 10 years. Wyndham and Cygnett have signed an exclusive 10-year development agreement to introduce and grow the La Quinta by Wyndham brand across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, with plans to open over 50 hotels.
Wyndham and Cygnett will introduce Registry Collection Hotels in India through a non-exclusive 10-year development agreement for 10 hotels. Hotels will be co-branded under 'Anamore', Cygnett's newly launched, luxury 5-star brand, with first hotel expected to open in 2026.
'Strategic alliances are crucial as they can help local brands with international distribution. There are brands that would like to expand outside India. How will they do that? By affiliating with international brands.' Manikis said he is keen to explore possibilities in hostel and branded residences space in India.
'The hostels business does well in Europe and I'm keen to explore that for India,' he said. 'We launched mid-scale branded residences offering in Europe, which is doing extremely well. Both these segments have enormous potential here.'
Launching more brands here is important for outbound market, said Manikis. 'There are certain brands...that are doing well in Europe. I would like to see them here.' 'When Indians travel to Germany, Prague and Warsaw, and they stay at a Vienna House...We would like to bring our Super 8 brand to country.'

Google has hired a few team members from Windsurf, a rising AI infrastructure startup. The move is aimed at strengthening the tech behemoth's own AI code generation capabilities. At the centre of this development is Varun Mohan, the co-founder and CEO of Windsurf. Mr Mohan, along with co-founder Douglas Chen, joins Google following a high-stakes corporate tug-of-war that reportedly saw OpenAI in advanced talks to acquire Windsurf just last month. Who is Varun Mohan, and what makes his background significant in the AI space? Varun Mohan, who has Indian roots, was raised in Sunnyvale, California, by parents who migrated from India. He attended The Harker School in San Jose before moving on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned both a Bachelor's and Master of Engineering degree in Computer Science. According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr Mohan co-founded Windsurf in June 2021. Based in Mountain View, the startup is known for developing AI tools that streamline software development workflows. Under his leadership, Windsurf quickly rose to prominence as one of the most promising names in AI infrastructure. Before founding Windsurf, he spent over three years at Nuro, the autonomous vehicle company. He joined in early 2018 as a software engineer. By August 2019, he was the tech lead for autonomy infrastructure and later became tech lead manager in 2020. His resume also includes engineering internships at some of Silicon Valley's most recognised firms. In 2017, he interned at Databricks, focusing on machine learning systems. Earlier that year, he worked at Cloudian Inc., where he helped develop S3 storage infrastructure. In 2016, he was a software engineering intern at Quora, contributing to its data infrastructure. How Varun Mohan ended up at Google Windsurf reportedly caught the attention of OpenAI, which was in advanced talks to acquire the startup as recently as June 2025. But Google managed to pull off a strategic coup by hiring its core team, including Mr Mohan and Mr Chen, blocking OpenAI's bid. According to Reuters, Google is paying $2.4 billion in licensing fees to access certain WindSurf technologies under non-exclusive terms, as confirmed by a person familiar with the deal. Google will not acquire any equity or controlling interest in the company. The former Windsurf team will now join Google DeepMind, where they'll focus on agentic coding initiatives, particularly within the Gemini project.

Luxury housing sales surge 85% in H1 2025: Report
NEW DELHI: India's luxury housing market witnessed a sharp acceleration in the first half of 2025, with sales rising 85% year-on-year to nearly 7,000 units across the top seven cities, according to a joint report by CBRE South Asia and ASSOCHAM . This surge underscores growing appetite among high net-worth individuals (HNIs), ultra-HNIs and non-resident Indians (NRIs), seeking premium assets amid macroeconomic resilience and a stronger U.S. dollar. Leading the charge was the Delhi-NCR market, which accounted for 57% of total luxury sales with approximately 4,000 units, registering a threefold increase over the previous year. Mumbai followed with 1,240 units (18% share), reflecting a 29% year-on-year growth. Cities like Chennai and Pune—traditionally dominated by mid-income housing—also entered the luxury orbit, contributing around 5% of the overall sales. Gaurav Kumar, managing director (Capital Markets and Land), CBRE India, said, "The remarkable rise in luxury housing, both in demand and supply, reflects a structural shift in homebuyer preferences and reaffirms India's position as a high-potential market for global and domestic investors alike." In tandem with sales, new luxury launches also rose 30% year-on-year to approximately 7,300 units during January-June 2025. Over 90% of these were concentrated in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Hyderabad, signaling a focused push by developers to cater to evolving buyer preferences. The overall housing market also remained buoyant, with ~1,32,000 units sold and ~1,38,000 units launched across the top cities, reflecting balanced demand and supply dynamics.
