"Paid Rs 30 Lakh Taxes, Got Zero Support": Laid off Bengaluru Techie Says Falling Into Depression

A viral social media post by Venkatesh Alla has sparked a heated online debate about job safety in India. The post shares the story of Mr Salim, a top-performing engineer from a National Institute of Technology (NIT) who was laid off from a leading tech firm with a lucrative salary of Rs 43.5 lakh per annum. Notably, Mr Salim had paid over Rs 30 lakh in income tax over five years, including Rs 11.22 lakh in the last year alone, yet received zero support after losing his job. He was given only three months' severance pay by the company. Now unemployed, Mr Salim is relying on his severance pay and savings to fund his children's education, which costs Rs 1.95 lakh per child per year. "Now jobless, thankfully without a home loan, he's using his savings and severance to pay for his children's education, ₹1.95 lakh per child, per year. That's where his "reward" is going. Worse, he fell into depression. He said he felt like he was suddenly on the road, abandoned from every direction. The same government he paid lakhs to in taxes betrayed him the moment he needed it most," the post read. "This is what happens to genuine taxpayers in India. You pay. You comply. You contribute. And when you're in crisis, you're on your own. This country desperately needs to change. Because right now, it's failing the very people who carry it forward," the post added. See the post here: Just got a message from Mr. Salim a topper from his NIT, working in Bangalore with a ₹43.5 LPA package laid off last month. The company handed him just 3 months' severance. Last year alone, he paid ₹11.22 lakhs in income tax. In just 5 years, over ₹30 lakhs gone into the… — Venkatesh Alla (@venkat_fin9) June 29, 2025 The tweet has sparked a heated debate about the lack of support for India's salaried taxpayers, especially during crises. Several users advocated for key reforms, including structured unemployment benefits to provide financial support during job loss, mental health programs to address related emotional struggles, and tax reforms that offer tangible returns for salaried contributors, potentially providing a safety net in times of crisis. However, some users disagreed on whether the government should assist in such cases. One user commented, "You want the government to give him a job because he lost his job? Does this make any sense?" Another wrote, "This is the same everywhere in the world. The problem isn't taxation, it's the lack of long-term financial planning." A third said, "The only solution is to expand the tax base, bring more into the formal economy. Only then can we reduce the burden on the salaried middle class." A fourth added, "Layoffs are always a tragedy and it's difficult for young and brilliant minds to get fired. I hope the brilliant guy will get the job soon. But what's the relationship between getting fired and paying taxes? It happens all the time in US. India can't sustain the European model of unemployment payment."

How a quiet revolution has given a safety net to 94 crore Indians

In a nation as vast and diverse as India, ensuring social and financial security for its 1.4 billion citizens is a monumental task. Yet, over the past decade, a transformative wave of reforms has silently reshaped the lives of 94.3 crore Indians, providing them with a safety net through one scheme or the other. Social security coverage in India expanded from 19% of its population in 2015 to 64.3% in has recorded a 45-percentage point jump in social security coverage over 10 years, an unprecedented rise acknowledged by the ILO. This makes it the second-largest in the world after China in terms of number of to a June 27 statement by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the "quiet revolution" has unfolded without fanfare, driven by initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and others schemes prioritising inclusion, affordability, and accessibility. Reacting to the milestone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Presently, most of the populace in India is taking advantage of one social protection benefit or the other and recently a very important report by the International Labour Organisation has come out. It has been mentioned in this report that more than 64% of the population of India is now definitely availing some sort of social protection benefit or the other".advertisement"This is also a great picture of social justice. These successes have instilled a belief that the coming times will be even better; India will become even stronger at every step," Modi said in his recent Mann Ki Baat TOOLS THAT MADE SOCIAL SECURITY REVOLUTION POSSIBLEThe cornerstone of the "quiet revolution" lies in the focus on financial inclusion, particularly for the most vulnerable Indians, says the press release. The Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), which offers life insurance of Rs 2 lakh for an annual premium of just Rs 330, has made security net accessible to low-income scale of the financial security transformation is PIB press release notes that 55.64 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened, providing banking access to the unbanked, particularly in rural accounts, coupled with 142 crore Aadhaar cards, have streamlined direct benefit transfers (DBTs), saving Rs 3.48 lakh crore by eliminating intermediaries and leakages. This digital infrastructure has been crucial in ensuring that subsidies and benefits reach intended recipients critical aspect of the "quiet revolution" is its focus on the unorganised sector, which employs nearly 90% of India's workforce. The e-Shram portal, with 30.91 crore registered workers, provides a digital identity to unorganised labourers. It grants them access to social security benefits like insurance and pensions. This initiative also addresses a long-standing gap in labour welfare, ensuring that daily-wage workers, street vendors, and others have a safety THE MARGINALISED INTO SECURITY NETadvertisementThe PIB release underscores that these efforts align with India's goal of inclusive growth and reduction of empowerment is also a key aim to create 3 crore "Lakhpati Didis", women earning Rs 1 lakh annually, out of 10 crore women linked to self-help groups, would further transform rural like PM Awas Yojana, providing 4 crore houses, and Ayushman Bharat, issuing 41.2 crore health cards, have further ensured housing and healthcare access, benefiting women and marginalised LEGISLATIONS CAN AID INCLUSIVE GROWTHA key enabler of this "quiet revolution" has been the simplification of India's labour the social security ecosystem was fragmented, with no coverage for unorganised workers. The Centre has consolidated 29 labour laws into four Labour Codes: the Wage Code (ensuring minimum wages), the Social Security Code 2020 (extending protection to all workers, including the unorganised sector), the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code 2020, and the Industrial Relations reforms have streamlined compliance and extended rights-based protections, which has fostered an inclusive social security framework, the release quiet revolution, built over a decade, has silently reshaped India's welfare priorities, without fanfare, but with a lasting impact. With the coverage expanding and systems strengthening further, the focus must remain on deepening the inclusive net, ensuring that no one is left behind. The true success of the transformation lies not just in numbers, but in the quiet assurance it brings to every citizen it touches.- EndsMust Watch
