Urukonda temple priest ends life, alleges harassment

Urukunda (Kurnool district): The revered Sri Eranna Swamy temple in Urukunda, Kurnool district, is reeling from the tragic suicide of its deputy chief priest, Poojanna Swamy, who took his life in the early hours of Sunday.
In a heart-wrenching suicide note, Poojanna accused temple executive officer (EO) Vijayaraju, chief priest JErappa, and Vedic scholar Mohan Sharma of relentless harassment and humiliation, driving him to this extreme step.
Poojanna Swamy, a hereditary priest from Urukunda, had served at the temple since 2002 and was promoted to deputy chief priest three years ago. His family's deep spiritual connection to the temple traces back to their ancestral land, where the deity is believed to have been installed. Demonstrating his devotion, Poojanna donated a four-room building worth Rs 50 lakh to the temple.
On Saturday night, he retired to bed as usual but was found dead by his family in an upper room of his residence on Sunday morning. In his alleged suicide note, Poojanna alleged that EO Vijayaraju enabled the chief priest and Vedic scholar to exert unchecked authority over fellow priests, undermining the dignity of hereditary priests.
He claimed CCTV cameras were installed in the sanctum sanctorum with malicious intent and decried the growing intolerance and power politics within the temple, stating that the EO's support of the duo left no room for justice, plunging him into deep mental distress.
Poojanna is survived by wife, daughters and a son.The Hans India repeatedly attempted to contact EO Vijayaraju for comment, but he did not respond to calls.

Jane Street: IT Dept conducts survey operation against Nuvama Wealth

Agency: PTI Mumbai, Jul 31 (PTI) The Income Tax Department on Thursday conducted a survey operation at the premises of brokerage firm Nuvama Wealth Management as part of an alleged tax evasion probe against Jane Street, the US-based proprietary trading firm accused of market manipulation, official sources said. Sources stated the department is undertaking a 'verification" exercise in the backdrop of a recent Sebi action against Jane Street. They added that officials are looking at the account books and computer records of the US firm and its local partners as part of the survey at the office premises. Nuvama Wealth Management Ltd, Jane Street's domestic trading partner, confirmed the IT action in a regulatory filing. 'The Income Tax Department is conducting a survey today, under Section 133A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, at the company's registered office. The company is extending full co-operation with the authorities and sharing requisite information," it informed the BSE. It added that the company 'continues to operate business as usual." Meanwhile, an email sent by PTI to Jane Street did not elicit a response. In an interim order issued on July 3, Sebi found Jane Street (JS) guilty of manipulating indices by simultaneously placing bets in cash along with futures and options markets to secure massive gains. As a result, Sebi barred the hedge fund from accessing the market and impounded over Rs 4,843 crore in gains. The probe found that JS made a profit of Rs 36,671 crore on a net basis during the probe period from January 2023 to May 2025. However, on July 21, Sebi permitted Jane Street to resume trading after the company deposited the mandated amount of Rs 4,843.57 crore into an escrow account. Established in 2000, Jane Street Group LLC is a global proprietary trading firm in the financial services industry. It employs over 2,600 people across five offices in the US, Europe, and Asia, and conducts trading operations in 45 countries. CoinDCX crypto heist: Bengaluru engineer held in Rs 379 crore case, police uncover suspicious freelance work

A Bengaluru-based software engineer has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a massive Rs 379-crore cryptocurrency heist targeting CoinDCX, a popular Indian crypto exchange. Police say the breakthrough came after a formal complaint was filed by Neblio Technologies, the parent company of CoinDCX. Rahul Agarwal, 30, a resident of Carmelaram in Bengaluru and originally from Haridwar, Uttarakhand, was taken into custody by the Whitefield CEN Crime Police on July 26. He was arrested after investigators found that confidential login credentials linked to his office laptop had been used during the security breach. How the heist began: One USDT, then Rs 379 crore According to a report, the case began unfolding when CoinDCX's vice-president for public policy, Hardeep Singh, approached police with concerns about unusual platform activity. At 2:37 am on July 19, an unidentified person accessed the CoinDCX system and moved a single USDT (a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar) to an external wallet. Hours later, the breach intensified. By the time the activity was flagged, a total of around $44 million (roughly Rs 379 crore) had been transferred to six separate crypto wallets. This large-scale siphoning prompted an internal investigation by the company. Police and internal probes point to Agarwal's laptop The company's internal investigation revealed that only one device appeared to be compromised — Rahul Agarwal's official laptop. Based on this finding, police seized the device and began questioning Agarwal. While denying direct involvement in the theft, Agarwal did admit to 'moonlighting' — working freelance projects for multiple clients outside of his official job. He claimed that while he received tasks from three to four private clients, he was unaware of their identities or the nature of their access. Freelance work, WhatsApp call from Germany, and a bank deposit Further scrutiny of Agarwal's activities revealed a Rs 15 lakh deposit in his bank account, the source of which remains unclear. When questioned, Agarwal reportedly told investigators that he had received a WhatsApp call from a German number. The caller allegedly instructed him to complete certain files that were sent to him, though he did not clarify how the files were used or who had sent them. The police have not ruled out the possibility that the breach could have been carried out remotely using Agarwal's credentials, either through malware or misuse by external actors during his freelance assignments. Ongoing investigation and unanswered questions While Agarwal remains in custody, police are continuing to investigate the origin of the German connection, the Rs 15 lakh bank deposit, and whether the theft involved any additional individuals or international links. Authorities are also examining how the hacker was able to escalate access from a single USDT transaction to a full-scale multi-crore theft, and whether internal lapses in cybersecurity protocols at CoinDCX contributed to the breach. As of now, the Rs 379-crore stolen amount remains untraced, and the identities behind the six crypto wallets used in the heist are under investigation.
