It was heart warming to see the Minister of Communications, Solly Malatsi, attending the launch of the flagship smartphone device by Honor, the Chinese mobile device company. It was not the first time the Minister attended a high profile tech event.
Not so long ago he attended another tech event hosted the Tik Tok Summit in Cape Town. Clearly, the Minister likes all things Tech it seems.
During the Tik Tok Summit he said what I thought should have been repeated at the Honor launch. He spoke about the need to support the creative economy in South Africa. Yet, he did not even speak at the Honor event.
What is interesting is that during the same week that the Minister was attending the event, in the US the Trump family launched a Trump branded smartphone. While it's a terrible idea for a sitting President to launch a telecommunications product while he's also indirectly regulating it (through the US Securities and Exchange Commission) I could not help but admire the thought behind the idea. Let me explain the beauty behind a homegrown device, which provides services that could be of benefit to the citizens. Imagine if the Minister of Communications had stood up and requested Honor to develop a smartphone for the African continent, starting with South Africa as a primary and launch market.
Such a smartphone could probably come pre-installed with major African developed Apps or even be designed to only embrace local tech. Just think about its apps that may include SABC Plus and Showmax for entertainment, Ayoba and Socialise for social networking, Siyavula and other online education platforms for education. In addition to current apps, imagine the opportunity such a device would create for local app developers to contribute towards building the local apps economy. If that is not enough, just imagine employment opportunities that could arise from a smartphone that is locally produced.
During the launch, Honor showed signs that they were ready to embrace local by announcing their partnership with the South African Football Association. What if such a partnership could lead to the development of the local online games development starting first with a PSL and SAFA online games. Once again Honor showed signs that they were ready to support innovation by announcing a $10 billion (R181bn) fund that could support innovation across the world. What if at least 1% of that fund could be channelled towards the development of the local technology industry.

I was not in the room when the Minister of Communications was chatting with the Honor (South Africa) CEO, Fred Zhou, however, I do hope that the Minister raised some of these points and if not may be he can raise them in future engagements with the Honor (South Africa) executive leadership. The company is no stranger to innovation. It has been around for many years.
Honor was officially founded in 2013. The Chinese technology company was created to help Huawei target a more budget-oriented consumer audience in China. Although it's no longer part of Huawei, it seems to have borrowed and learnt a lot from its cutting edge innovations. Honor first branched out to an international market in 2014, choosing Malaysia as its first location outside of China. In October 2017 Honor spread its wings into Europe. Its first product in Europe was the Honor 6 and the company managed to sell 20 million phones in the first half of 2015. Honor grew quickly, as a result you are likely to find the brand in most countries around the world.
Following a strong uptake of its AI-powered innovations in South Africa, Honor has introduced the new Honor 400 and Honor 400 Pro. This is a launch that could further entrench the brand's momentum in the local mid-to-premium market. Unveiled at Kyalami Racecourse, the event brought together government and industry voices, including Malatsi, underscoring the growing alignment between mobile innovation and digital policy.
Honor's Zhou announced that their goal is to become, 'Top 1 in 2028' or the leading smartphone brand in South Africa. The company is armed with a price strategy that is accompanied with great quality. I do believe that will not be enough. An Honor smartphone designed for Africa and produced in South Africa may be a better strategy.

1000 Afrikaners prioritised for US refugee status

The US administration, under President Donald Trump, is expected to welcome 1000 Afrikaner 'refugees' this year as part of its resettlement programme. This comes after two groups of white South Africans were granted asylum in America over their 'fear of persecution' and claims of 'racial discrimination' in the country. Meanwhile, in a controversial move, Trump has indefinitely halted refugees from other countries earlier this year. According to the Washington Post, US authorities have pledged to resettle around 1000 Afrikaner 'refugees' in the coming months. The group will be prioritised above any other countries that have applied for the US Refugee Admissions Programme (USRAP) The resettlement process is expected to run until the end of September. According to the publication, the Trump administration will also move to block 160 refugees who were scheduled to travel to the US ahead of the February ban. Another 1200 had been vetted and had their flights booked to arrive in the US after the ban was imposed. International Refugee Assistance Project attorney Melissa Keaney said of the administration: 'It simply doesn't want to process any other refugee populations other than white Afrikaners'. More white South Africans are expected to take up Trump's refugee status. Image: Saul Loeb / AFP. While US authorities claim that refugee status is open to all 'racial minorities' in South Africa, the first two groups that have resettled abroad have been from the white population. Despite initially being targeted at Afrikaner farmers and white people, US authorities have since included coloured, Indian, and 'mixed-race' South Africans. Applicants must prove that they are 'persecuted' South Africans who are victims of 'racial discrimination'. Jaco Kleynhans, of the Solidarity Movement, stated that many Afrikaners had applied for refugee status. He told the media earlier this month: 'Several more groups will fly to the USA over the next few weeks. The US Embassy in Pretoria, in collaboration with the State Department in Washington, DC, is currently processing 8,000 applications. And we expect many more Afrikaner refugees to travel to the USA over the next few months. 'They are settling in states across the USA, but particularly southern states such as Texas, North and, South Carolina, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.' He continued: 'Our primary focus is not refugee status for Afrikaners. But rather to find ways to ensure a free, safe, and prosperous future for Afrikaners in South Africa. We remain 100% convinced that South Africa can and must create a home for all its people.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Reimagining Africa's economic power through integration and innovation

Kopano Mohlala 27 June 2025 | 13:15 The question is no longer whether the continent has potential, but how that potential can be turned into wealth for Africans. Acclaimed journalist Crystal Orderson, who specialises in economic and political affairs concerning the African continent, joins 702's Bongani Bingwa to discuss the strategies, forces, and changes that are transforming Africa's place in the world economy. With a young, growing population and untapped resources, Africa holds structural advantages that many global economies are looking toward. With 1.3 billion inhabitants and a combined GDP of more than $3 trillion, the continent is establishing itself as a significant force in a world shaken by geopolitical unrest. "We have critical minerals. We have a youth population. And despite global uncertainties, African economies are finding ways to move forward." - Crystal Orderson, Journalist The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aims to increase intra-African trade, support local production, and unite disparate markets into a single trading bloc. Akinwumi Adesina, outgoing President of the African Development Bank, asserts that to achieve scaled growth, Africa must "produce local, buy local." Remittances, which are frequently undervalued, are now a vital component of economic stability. In 2024, over $100 billion was sent home by Africans living overseas, significantly surpassing traditional donor aid to the continent. "A big thing is Africa's remittances. There's really a sense Ubuntu when it comes to remittances, and for many Africans, it is a lifeline, but also it then creates that extra money to start the business…" - Crystal Orderson, Journalist Meanwhile, foreign direct investment overtook traditional donor aid in 2023, reaching $52 billion. This momentum is being harnessed by countries like Ghana and Ivory Coast to enhance agro-processing and reduce their dependence on food imports. In 2024, Ghana's "Planting for Food and Jobs" programme alone contributed to a 30% decrease in food imports. African leaders have now approved the African Financial Stability Mechanism, a pioneering initiative led by the African Development Bank, to reduce reliance on external financial systems. The aim is to boost resilience. According to Orderson, the fund will assist with debt management and serve as a buffer during liquidity crises. Africa has only recently established its own financial safety net, unlike regions such as Europe or Asia. The facility will feature its own credit rating agency, enabling nations to access capital markets on their own terms. Preliminary estimates suggest that debt servicing costs for African countries could be reduced by $20 billion. "This facility will give African countries that financial cushion, because we don't have it, unlike Europe or Asia, who have that kind of mechanism in place." - Crystal Orderson, Journalist The story of Africa is changing. A new economic chapter is emerging, marked by financial integration, the expansion of the private sector, the strategic use of remittances, and audacious continental policies. "We learn lessons from the past, but it's about how we add value to all of this. As the world changes, as geopolitics shift, and everyone looks to the continent again." - Crystal Orderson, Journalist

President Xi Jinping says China, Senegal inject fresh impetus into Global South cooperation

President Xi Jinping meet with Prime Minister of Senegal Ousmane Sonko, who is in China to attend the 2025 Summer Davos Forum, in Beijing. Image: Ding Lin/ Xinhua / Xinhua via AFP China is willing to work with Senegal to strengthen solidarity and cooperation, deepen their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, bring more benefits to the two peoples, and inject fresh impetus into China-Africa friendship and Global South cooperation, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday. Xi made the remarks when meeting with Prime Minister of Senegal Ousmane Sonko, who is in China to attend the 2025 Summer Davos Forum, in Beijing. The Chinese president noted that he co-chaired the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye last September, leading China-Africa relations into a new phase of jointly building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era. Xi also said that China and Senegal should firmly support each other's independent and self-reliant development paths, strengthen party-to-party and governance exchanges, and continuously consolidate the foundation of political mutual trust. China and Senegal are partners and good brothers on the road to development and revitalization, Xi said, adding that China is willing to work closely with Senegal to implement the 10 partnership actions between China and Africa, carry out more people's livelihood projects, and encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Senegal's renewable energy, digital infrastructure and other sectors, becoming partners for win-win cooperation. Noting China and Senegal each have their own unique culture, Xi said both countries should take the opportunity of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges to strengthen exchanges in fields such as culture, education, tourism, sports and youth, and bring their peoples closer together, becoming friends of mutual civilizational learning. Both China and Senegal must firmly defend the international system with the United Nations at its core, practice true multilateralism, uphold global governance featuring extensive consultation, joint contributions and shared benefits, and jointly promote world peace, prosperity, and progress, Xi said. Sonko said China is a reliable partner for Senegal, and that the two countries have always respected each other, united in mutual assistance, with stable and resilient bilateral relations and good progress in cooperation in various fields. Senegal firmly adheres to the one-China principle and looks forward to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership with China, advancing the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, energy and other fields, and contributing to Senegal's economic and social development, Sonko said. Both China and Senegal are members of the Global South with shared values, and Senegal is willing to closely cooperate with China on international and regional issues, firmly becoming China's strategic partner, promoting international fairness and justice, and safeguarding the common interests of the Global South, Sonko added.
