Min Kyu-dong's action thriller continues international festival run after Berlin debut
Director Min Kyu-dong's action-thriller "The Old Woman With the Knife" has secured an official invitation to the 15th Beijing International Film Festival's Panorama section, marking another international recognition for the film following its screening at the Berlin International Film Festival and Brussels Fantastic Film Festival.
The Beijing International Film Festival, to take place April 18-26, ranks alongside the Shanghai International Film Festival as one of China's premier cinema events. "The Old Woman With the Knife" will screen out of competition in the Panorama section, the festival's most eclectic program known for showcasing films of artistic merit across genres.
Min expressed his excitement about the invitation. "I'm thrilled that 'The Old Woman With the Knife' will be screened in Beijing. I hope the film's entertainment value and emotional depth will resonate with audiences there," he said.
The film's selection carries additional significance as Korean productions have historically had a limited presence at Chinese film festivals. It follows the 2024 invitation of box office hit "Exhuma" to the festival's Midnight Thrill section.
"The Old Woman With the Knife" stars veteran actor Lee Hye-young as Hornclaw, an aging killer with nearly five decades of lethal expertise. Her carefully controlled life begins to unravel when she encounters Bullfight (Kim Sung-cheol), an ambitious young killer whose obsessive pursuit suggests motives far deeper than professional rivalry.
The 131-minute film, based on Gu Byeong-mo's bestselling novel, features the 61-year-old Lee in an unconventional role that puts an older woman at the center of an action-driven assassin narrative. Following its world premiere at Berlin in February, the film is scheduled for release in South Korea on May 1.

Korean game firms bet on MMORPGs to turn earnings tide

Major Korean game developers such as NCSoft, Netmarble and Kakao Games are doubling down on upcoming MMORPG releases for the second half of this year, seeking improved earnings in the success of the new games. NCSoft plans to launch Aion 2, a follow-up version of Aion released in 2008, in the fourth quarter of this year. The company said Tuesday that the new massively multiplayer online role-playing game will expand the original Aion universe with a renewed focus on its combat system and content structure. Aion 2 is expected to be launched in Korea and Taiwan first, with launches in North America and Europe following later. 'Although Aion 2 is based on a traditional MMORPG style, it is gearing up to offer a variety of (player versus environment) content so it can be a game that is enjoyed by both existing MMO users and young gamers,' said Ahn Jae-min, an analyst at NH Investment and Securities. 'Newly released games proved that the MMORPG market is well alive, and that the power of (intellectual property) is an important factor in a game's success. Considering this, Aion 2 is forecast to exceed expectations.' Netmarble is preparing to release two new games in the second half of this year: The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin, a new open-world action RPG based on the cartoon, "The Seven Deadly Sins," which sold over 55 million copies across the world, and Vampir, a Vampire-themed, dark fantasy MMORPG set in the Middle Ages. The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin will be available on all consoles, PC and mobile; Vampir will be offered on mobile devices and PC. Vampir is projected to showcase the Korean game developer's potential in the gothic horror genre. Kakao Games is scheduled to launch Chrono Odyssey, an open-world action MMORPG with a fantasy background, in the fourth quarter of this year. The new game was developed with Epic's Unreal Engine 5 to offer stunning visuals, and will be available for PC and console as a buy-to-play title. This is unusual for the MMORPG genre, which typically offers free gaming with cash items that users can buy in-game. About 400,000 gamers took part in Chrono Odyssey's closed beta test in North America and Europe. 'Although MMORPGs have passed the stage of rapid growth, it is a genre that can create stable profit as its loyal fan base is still very solid,' said Lee Jun-ho, an analyst at Hana Securities. '(MMORPGs) can create continuous performances if they are backed up with content updates and operational stability.'

NewJeans, Ador remain locked in high-stakes legal battle over exclusive contract

The girl group continues to accuse agency of mismanagement, while Ador says contract termination is baseless and driven by former CEO Min Hee-jin The legal standoff between K-pop girl group NewJeans and its agency Ador continues to escalate, with both sides presenting conflicting arguments over the validity of the group's exclusive contract. The Seoul Central District Court on Thursday held the third hearing in Ador's lawsuit seeking to confirm the enforceability of its contract with the five-member group. The NewJeans members, who attempted to terminate their contracts unilaterally in November, were not present in court; only their legal representatives attended. NewJeans' attorneys attributed the dispute to a now-concluded internal audit of former Ador CEO Min Hee-jin, which was initiated by parent company Hybe in May 2024. They argued that the audit — and Hybe's subsequent attempt to remove Min — were based on unfounded suspicions. On July 18, police cleared Min of criminal breach of trust allegations filed by Hybe last year; Hybe plans to appeal. The group's legal team further claimed that Ador failed to meet fundamental management responsibilities, alleging that this breach justified the artists' attempt to sever ties. Ador rejected the accusations, asserting that the reasons for contract termination have shifted over time and appear to have been constructed by NewJeans and their legal team retroactively. 'This is an unreasonable attempt to invalidate the contracts after the fact,' said a lawyer for Ador. The agency emphasized its financial investment in NewJeans, citing over 21 billion won ($15.3 million) spent on the group's development and debut. This included 7 billion won for the group's debut album and 2 billion won for music videos. 'Thanks to this support, NewJeans achieved explosive success — something even the court has acknowledged,' Ador's legal representative said. 'Yet despite this, the group attempted to unilaterally cancel its contracts just two years after its debut. Such a move cannot be permitted.' Ador also claimed that Min was the driving force behind the group's attempted departure. According to the agency's attorney, private messages exchanged between Min and former Ador executives revealed that she had been planning to 'take' NewJeans as early as three years ago. The messages allegedly outlined strategies for terminating the exclusive contract, including orchestrating plagiarism accusations against another Hybe-affiliated girl group, Illit, and manipulating media narratives. The agency also alleged that the legal notice to terminate the contract was drafted by Min's legal representatives, further pointing to her involvement. Responding to accusations of mismanagement, Ador maintained it had upheld its responsibilities and noted that each member had already received over 5 billion won in earnings. 'The agency is still preparing for the group's comeback,' Ador said. 'Our staff are waiting for the day they return.'

Incheon airport offers hands-on class in 'norigae' making

One-day workshop runs through July 31, inspired bynod to Korean tradition in 'KPop Demon Hunters' Incheon International Airport is offering travelers a unique opportunity to engage with Korean culture through a one-day norigae-making class, inspired in part by the hit animated film, KPop Demon Hunters. Norigae are traditional Korean pendant accessories worn with hanbok for beauty, good fortune and spiritual protection. Organized by the Korea Heritage Agency in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Incheon International Airport Corporation, the program will run from Monday through July 31. Participants can learn to craft their own norigae. The free class takes place at Korean Culture Street, located on the fourth floor of the general area in Terminal 1. Sessions are held four times a day at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., with each limited to 12 participants. On-site registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Norigae recently captured renewed attention after being featured in "KPop Demon Hunters," where each Huntrix character wears a modernized version of the accessory. In the film, the norigae are integrated into their stage outfits and weapons to help them fight demons. Titled 'Playing with norigae,' the program is designed to give both international travelers and domestic tourists a hands-on experience with Korea's traditional aesthetics and cultural heritage. "'KPop Demon Hunters' surge in popularity has sparked interest in traditional Korean culture, such as the gat — a traditional Korean hat that features a wide brim and a cylindrical crown, norigae and dopo — a long traditional robe. We hope this program will give travelers a closer and more personal experience with Korea's unique style and heritage," Ahn Hye-min, who heads the Airport Project Team at the KHA, said in a press release.
