Australia To Include Youtube In Under-16 Social Media Ban
The federal government has accepted a recommendation from its online safety regulator, the eSafety Commissioner, to include YouTube in the social media ban, said Albanese and Anika Wells, the minister for communications, at a press conference in Canberra on Wednesday.
YouTube was initially granted an exemption from the ban, which will come into effect from Dec. 10, due to its education and health content. Nonetheless, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant had told the government in a formal advice in June that the platform exposes children to harmful content.

Albanese said that the government is prepared to "take action" against social media platforms that cause social harm.
"We know this is not the only solution, and there's more to do. But it will make a difference," he said.
Wells said that the decision to include YouTube in the ban was about "prioritising parents ahead of platforms."
The announcement comes after YouTube, and parent company Google, earlier in July threatened legal action on constitutional grounds against any move by the government to remove the platform's exemption.
Wells said that the government would not be intimidated by technology companies.
"We can't control the ocean, but we can police the sharks, and that is why we will not be intimidated by legal threats when this is a genuine fight for the well-being of Australian kids," she said.

The Blue Economy concept encompasses various sectors including fisheries, agriculture, solar energy and green energy from sea, land and air. Anwar credited Hajiji for driving this transformative approach which has now gained national recognition and adoption. He also pointed out the importance of unity and cooperation between Federal and State for Malaysia's progress. 'To make our country successful, let us work together. If we want to elevate dignity, for the sake of Sabah and all of Malaysia's states, let us cooperate, give way and jointly raise our country's interests,' he said. Anwar also spoke about how this collaborative approach has already yielded results in agricultural production and pointed out Malaysia's unexpected success in producing onions, chili and most recently, avocados that were previously heavily imported. 'Who would have thought that Malaysia, through Sabah's fertile land and State Government cooperation, could produce avocados, a fruit that attracts attention and has high demand and now the results are effective,' he said. He noted that Malaysia's import bill for agricultural products had reached over RM50 billion, making domestic production initiatives even more important for the nation's food security and economic stability. 'The success in producing previously imported crops demonstrates what can be achieved through focused cooperation between various agencies including Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, the Department of Agriculture and Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority,' he said. He said the current Federal Government operates under strict principles of service rather than exploitation. 'The current Federal Government leadership has set conditions whereby we cannot take interests, whether land, timber or shares from the states. We come to serve the states. There are no conflicts between the Federal and State governments,' he said. He also noted that farmers, breeders and fishermen form the core majority of Malaysia's population and require a peaceful nation, stable government and complete cooperation between federal and state levels. 'States cannot work separately. The Federal government cannot work separately. The better our cooperation, the better it is for the people.' He expressed confidence that the Blue Economy approach, born from Sabah's initiative but now adopted nationally, will serve as a model for sustainable development across Malaysia. King's historic state visit to Russia underscores deepening bilateral ties, says Ambassador
MOSCOW: The state visit by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, to Russia from Aug 5-10 has been described as the highlight of the diplomatic ties between the two countries, said Malaysia's Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai. He said the visit is the highest-level ever made and the first by a Malaysian head of state to Russia since diplomatic relations were established in April 1967. "His Majesty's state visit, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir V. Putin, is a recognition of the five decades of diplomatic ties with Malaysia, which was among the earliest Asean countries to establish ties with the then Soviet Union. "This visit also reflects the crucial role of the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the context of international relations,' he told Bernama here on Sunday (Aug 1) in conjunction with Sultan Ibrahim's state visit. Cheong said the visit will begin in Moscow, where His Majesty is scheduled to hold an official meeting with Putin at the Grand Kremlin Palace. Both leaders are expected to discuss potential cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, higher education, technology and innovation, people-to-people ties, digital transformation, agriculture and food security, as well as regional and international issues. "This highest-level visit will certainly have a high impact in increasing the momentum and positive trend of bilateral relations between Malaysia and Russia. "It sends the message that Malaysia is serious and committed to efforts to strengthen and improve bilateral relations with Russia in all fields, particularly strategic cooperation and people-to-people ties,' he said.
