Ethiopian parliament passes bill banning single-use plastic bags
ADDIS ABABA, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian House of Peoples' Representatives (HoPR), the lower chamber of parliament, on Tuesday approved a bill that bans single-use plastic bags.
Under the new law, individuals found using or distributing single-use plastic bags face fines of up to 5,000 Ethiopian birr (about 38.7 U.S. dollars), while manufacturers, importers, and marketers could face steeper penalties or suspension of licenses.
"This is a necessary and long-overdue step," said Gemedo Dalle, minister of environment, forest, and climate change, during a press briefing following the parliamentary vote.
"Plastic pollution is choking our rivers, poisoning livestock, and polluting farmlands. Ethiopia must act now before it becomes unmanageable," Dalle said.
Ahead of the parliamentary vote, it was noted that a nationwide public awareness campaign will be launched shortly, aiming to educate citizens about the details of the new law.
According to data obtained from the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority, plastic bags constitute 46 percent of the plastic waste generated by the public in the East African country.

Bahlil noted that the plant will have the capacity to supply batteries for 300,000 vehicles, which would help reduce Indonesia's fuel imports by approximately 300,000 kiloliters per year. He added that the project aligned with Prabowo's vision for more equitable national development. While it was launching in Java, about three-quarters of the total investment is set to be directed to North Maluku province.

China opposes any tariff deal made at its expense: Commerce Ministry
BEIJING: (Bernama-Xinhua) -- China firmly opposes any country making trade deals with the United States (US) at the expense of Chinese interests in exchange for so-called "tariff relief", a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said on Saturday (June 28), according to Xinhua. "If such a situation arises, China will not accept it and will take resolute countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," said the spokesperson, responding to a media query about recent US trade talks with other economies. COVID-19 Death Toll In Bangladesh Reaches 22 So Far This Month
DHAKA, June 29 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Bangladesh on Saturday recorded two new COVID-19 deaths during the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 22 so far this month, reported Xinhua. The country on June 5 recorded its first COVID-19 fatality this year when a man died from the infectious disease in the capital Dhaka. The country also reported seven new COVID-19 cases, with the daily test positivity rate jumping to 3.87 per cent in the 24 hours till 8:00 am local time Saturday.
