All-Star pitcher, who got Tommy John surgery shortly after battling cancer, activated off injured list
Hendriks, who has not pitched in nearly two years, has been activated off the injured list, as his Tommy John rehab is finally complete.
The Australian had surgery in the summer of 2023, and while there's never an ideal time for such an injury, luck simply was not on Hendriks' side.
Hendriks' 2023 debut was postponed as he battled non-Hodgkin lymphoma earlier that year. He did not made his season debut until May 29, but appeared in just five games before going under the knife. The surgery caused him to miss the rest of that season and all of last year.
Now with the Boston Red Sox, Hendriks will make his long-awaited return to the bump.
Hendriks appeared in spring training, but arm soreness kept him on the IL to begin the season. He tried to make a comeback last year, but he suffered a setback that cost him late.
Before the injury, Hendriks had become one of the most prominent closers in all of baseball, leading the majors with 38 saves in 2021 with the Chicago White Sox.
Hendriks went to three-consecutive All-Star Games from 2019 to 2022 (there was no midsummer classic in 2020).
The pitcher owns a lifetime 3.82 ERA, but that's inflated from his early-career struggles. From his rookie year in 2011 through 2014, Hendriks struggled as a starter and owned a 5.92 ERA.
But something clicked after he became a full-time reliever with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2015, as he owned a 2.92 ERA in 54 outings out of the bullpen.
Then, over his next eight seasons with the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox, he proved that the 2015 was no fluke, as he's owned a 2.97 ERA since.

Jonathan Loáisiga came on to face George Springer, who drove in Schneider with a game-tying single. Making his second career start, Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out three. Toronto's Max Scherzer allowed four runs and five hits in five innings. New York jumped out to an early lead when Chisholm hit a three-run homer off Scherzer in the first, his 18th. Barger hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first, but Bellinger's one-out blast in the fifth, his 18th, made it 4-1. (AP) — Jose Caballero had two hits and two RBIs and the Tampa Bay Rays scored all their runs in the second inning before holding on for a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. The loss was Chicago's first since the All-Star break and snapped a season-high five-game winning streak. Tampa Bay's Drew Rasmussen allowed two runs on three hits over four innings, walking one and striking out five. It was just the fifth time Rasmussen didn't complete five innings, so Edwin Uceta (7-2) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Pete Fairbanks pitched the ninth for his 17th save. White Sox starter Davis Martin (2-8), returning from a forearm strain, was charged with four runs — three earned — on three hits over five innings. Associated Press CLEVELAND (AP) — Angel Martinez had three hits, Jose Ramirez homered and the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 Tuesday night for their fourth win in five games since the All-Star break. Kyle Manzardo and Bryan Rocchio each drove in a pair of runs as the Guardians have won 10 of 12 after a 10-game losing streak to get back to .500 at 50-50. Ramon Laureano went deep in the sixth inning for the Orioles, who have dropped four of five since the break. Ramirez drove a 94.4 mile fastball near the top of the strike zone into the right-field seats off Baltimore's Brandon Young (0-5) in the first inning. Seven of Ramirez's 21 homers have come in the last 12 games. Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo (2-0) did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, when Ramon Urias led off with a base hit down the left-field line.
