HC commutes death sentence in child murder case

Time of India24-05-2025
Jabalpur: The MP high court has commuted the death sentence of a man convicted of abducting and murdering his six-year-old nephew, instead sentencing him to life imprisonment until his last breath.
A division bench of Justice Vivek Agrawal and Justice Dev Narayan Mishra also nullified the life sentence of the co-accused woman in the case.
On March 12, 2019, six-year-old Shivkant Prajapati from Rahikvara village in the Nagod police station area of Satna was kidnapped by his uncle, Anutav.
Co-accused Vibha alias Vidya Prajapati called the child's family, demanding a ransom of Rs 2 lakh. The accused uncle strangled the child to death.
Police filed a charge sheet against the accused in a Nagod court. The Nagod court considered the case as the rarest of the rare and sentenced the accused uncle to death.
Additionally, the co-accused woman was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The case was referred to the high court for confirmation of the death penalty. An appeal was also filed in the HC challenging the sentence.
During the hearing, the bench found that the accused was only 21 years old at the time of the crime. Moreover, the crime was committed for money.
The bench did not consider the incident to fall under the rarest of rare category and annulled the death sentence. Due to a lack of evidence, the bench also overturned the sentence of the co-accused woman.

Baseless: Radhika Yadav's cousins dismiss her friend's restrictions at home claim

Radhika Yadav's cousins have refuted the allegations levelled by her best friend Himanshika Singh, in which she said that the former tennis player, who was shot dead by her father earlier this week, felt suffocated due to several "restrictions" imposed on her by her family. They said that Radhika's family did not restrict her from doing a video released on social media, Himanshika, who has known Radhika since 2012, claimed her friend was often scolded for wearing shorts, talking to boys, and living life on her own terms and that she wanted to move one imposes any kind of restrictions on their children in our village. The claims that Radhika was stopped from living life her way are wrong. If that was the case, her father, Deepak Yadav, wouldn't have spent a huge amount of money on her and sent her to different countries to play tennis. Whatever happened is best known to their family," Rohit Yadav, Radhika's cousin, told India Today TV. Radhika, 25, was shot dead at her home in Gurugram, allegedly by her father, Deepak Yadav, using his licenced revolver on July 10. The murder took place at their Gurugram Sector 57 residence where Radhika lived with her her father claimed that he killed her because people taunted him for "living off her earnings" and that he did not like her running a tennis academy, Himanshika claimed that Radhika's movements were tightly controlled, with fixed times for going out and returning home."Radhika did not have any problems as claimed by some people. If she had any problem, wouldn't she have discussed it with her family? What proves that whatever her friend is saying is true?" Rohit Yadav Yadav dismissed the 'love jihad' angle being associated with Radhika's killing given her alleged close association with a person named Inamul Haque."There is nothing like a love jihad angle to this. People have blown things out of proportion over an insignificant video of Radhika with a person as they are narrow-minded," Ashok Yadav, another cousin of Radhika, said, adding that the reason why she wanted to move out of India might be that she wanted to grow her tennis another hard-hitting post, Himanshika criticised Radhika's father for making her life "miserable" with his "controlling, constant criticism". However, Radhika's cousins rubbished the allegation."Radhika had all the freedom. She was free to choose her career and pursue the same. Her father spent the money so she could grow her tennis career," her cousin Harish Yadav told India Today Radhika's childhood, Deepak has spent over Rs 2.5 crore on her tennis training. However, an injury suffered two years ago kept her away from furthering her career in competitive Yadav has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody.- EndsMust Watch

Two people including Sahara Group's director arrested in money laundering case

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate on Sunday said that it has arrested two persons in probe against the Sahara Group over money laundering case, which included Anil Vailaparampil Abraham, Executive Director of Sahara Group's Chairman Core Management (CCM) Office, and Jitendra Prasad Verma, a long-time associate and property broker of the conglomerate. The arrests were made by ED's Kolkata zonal branch in connection with the money laundering probe against the Sahara group and its linked entities. Both the accused are currently in the ED's remand. They were produced before the court on Saturday, following which the central agency was given their custody till Monday. In an official statement, the ED said, 'Anil V Abraham played a key role in coordinating and facilitating the sale of Sahara Group properties, many of which involved substantial unaccounted cash components that were siphoned off while J. P. Verma was involved in executing these property transactions and assisted in routing large cash proceeds generated from these sale transactions,' and added that the duo tried to hide the proceeds of crime. The investigating agency also claims to have found various incriminating evidence during its search operations, conducted under the PMLA and said that it was being deliberately disposed of to evade accountability. 'It was found from the various digital evidence that these 2 persons, viz., Anil V Abraham and JP Verma, had played a key role in the disposal of such properties and assisting the promoters of the Sahara group in siphoning off the funds. The promoters were found to be involved in such malpractices while remaining outside India,' it further said. The ED investigation into alleged money laundering began on the basis of three FIRs registered under Sections 420 and 120B of the IPC, 1860, against M/s Humara India Credit Cooperative Society Ltd. (HICCSL) and others by the Police in Odisha, Bihar, and Rajasthan. It further informed that over 500 FIRs have been registered against various Sahara Group entities, with more than 300 involving scheduled offences under the PMLA, alleging large-scale cheating of depositors through forced redeposits and denial of maturity payments. The ED claimed that the Sahara Group was operating a Ponzi scheme through entities like HICCSL, SCCSL, SUMCS, SMCSL, SICCL, SIRECL, SHICL, and lured depositors and agents with promises of high returns and commissions. During investigations, statements of various persons, including depositors, agents, employees of the Sahara Group and other related persons, were also recorded under Section 50 of PMLA. Also, searches were conducted under section 17 of PMLA wherein cash of Rs. 2.98 Crore was seized.

Assam woman defamed with AI-generated porn after fake link to adult film industry goes viral; engineer arrested

DIBRUGARH: A person has been arrested in Assam's Tinsukia district for allegedly morphing photographs and creating AI-generated pornographic videos of a woman and circulating those on social media, a senior police officer said on Sunday. Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police (in-charge) Sizal Agarwal said a complaint was received from the victim on Saturday stating that morphed images and videos were being used to defame her. The victim had been in the spotlight for the last few weeks after her purported image with an adult film actor surfaced, with claims that the Assam woman has joined the adult film industry in the US. "We received a complaint yesterday that the morphed and AI-generated photos and videos of the victim were being circulated on social media. The reference of an Instagram page was included with it, and when we searched for credentials of the page owner, we found a phone number which we traced to the accused," Agarwal said. "The accused had used the image of the victim to generate several obscene content and pornographic materials using AI software. They have a past acquaintance, and he did it due to personal reasons," he added. The accused, a mechanical engineer by qualification, was arrested from Tinsukia on Saturday night, the SSP (in-charge) said. Agarwal said the crime, which initially started as a harassment tactic, continued when the accused began monetising the content. "There was a subscription link to the adult content that he had posted, and people had to pay to access it. He earned about Rs 10 lakh through it. He kept on continuing the crime as he got greedy, though he had initiated it for harassing the woman," she said. The officer said multiple agencies will be involved in the investigation as digital evidence has to be examined, with the police seizing laptop, mobile phones, hard disk and other items from the accused. Agarwal also urged people to be careful while accessing online content and, have a closer look before circulating any information they receive on social media.
