U's fan reflects on opening game in Indonesia
It used to consist of runs up and down Shotover Hill. Now the club is majority owned by a consortium led by two Indonesians, Anindya Bakrie and Erick Thohir, and have been invited to play in the President's Cup.
So last Friday, I was on a flight to Jakarta. Some 17 or 18 hours later, I landed and was hit by the 30 degrees heat. A different type to the UK where you can just find a spot in the shade.
The cab from the airport to the hotel was like the old game Crazy Taxi with cars and mopeds all switching lanes and using the narrow hard shoulder to get an edge on their way.
I had booked a few nights along with a few others at a hotel right next to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

Saturday evening, I went down to the hotel bar to find another four Oxford fans, and later we were up to eight as various flights and transfers arrived. We spent the evening working out who had seen Oxford in most countries outside of England.
Sunday was game day. In the hotel a few hours before kick-off, we were now up to around 10 or 12 fans. A few of us wore replica shirts/ OUFC branded tops.
The rain was lashing down and I couldn't see the match being on. However, rain and thunderstorms in Jakarta seem to appear afternoon to dusk and then disappear.
By 6:30pm, it had stopped and we made our way to the ground. Match tickets were bought online – only £3 as well! Lots of food and snack stalls on the outer perimeter, but no programmes or merch.
Our group went up to the top tier of the east stand opposite the dugouts, and those with flags tied them over the railings and we gathered in the front row of that tier, and a few others joined us.
Pre-match, an Indonesian singer entertained us for a couple of songs, then hundreds of kids were set out in groups of either red or white kits on the running track.
The stadium announcer ran through the teams in both languages, but seemed to have learned his English presentation style from watching American sports, with a rising intonation calling out each player name in full with all middle names.
Huge cheers from the home fans for Romeny and Marselino. A long introductory speech was then made with the speaker having several pages of notes.

Eventually we got to the actual match build-up. Fireworks and light shows, mobile phone flashlights, the kids all doing keepy-uppies on the running track, more kids holding club banners on the pitch, the unveiling of the cup trophy.
The Indonesian national anthem was sung in full, and as they had omitted ours, we sang the traditional two verses of God Save the King, and got applause from home fans near us.
As for the game, we were well ahead from the start, and I think playing more of an exhibition game than a pre-season. We let off shots and attacks when in league football we would have been more measured. In defence we perhaps were more minded not to get yellow cards or more importantly any injuries. The match finished with a couple of late goals for Indonesia All-Stars to make it 6-3, which kept the scoreline more respectable.
The total crowd was 41,026, and a real mix of kids and mums and dads. We saw a few locals with Oxford Romeny/ Marselino shirts, some apparently had been studying at Oxford.
At half-time and then at full-time, it took perhaps half an hour extra to get out with Indonesian fans wanting to take pictures with the Oxford and England flags and fans. All in all, an enjoyable evening.

Shrimpers suffer heavy defeat at Peterborough United
SOUTHEND United's youth team coach Danny Heath was frustrated after seeing his squad concede seven times in the first half at Category 2 Academy side Peterborough United. After competing strongly with Colchester United, narrowly losing 3-2 at Garon Park in their opening pre-season fixture, and Category 3 outfit Gillingham, who required a stoppage time equaliser in a 3-3 draw last week, hat-tricks by Kurtis Simmons and Patryk Sykut saw Posh register a 7-2 success. "I thought the first half was very disappointing,' he said. 'We've conceded more goals in 45 minutes of football than we have in the rest of pre-season so far.' 'This was about opportunities for players that haven't been playing, or haven't been getting minutes, recently. "Some players have been disappointed about not getting many minutes as pre-season has gone on, but the message has been that we will be fair and give them an opportunity to show what they can do once they have built their fitness up. 'It looked like the team had been thrown together and asked to play a game of football. "The manner of the goals conceded was disappointing; for one of them their player has taken seven, eight, nine touches in our box too comfortably, too easily, with no pressure on the ball and has been able to pass it into the corner. "That comes down to a bit of desire and communication and someone pressing the ball.' Peterborough took the lead in just the second minute. A corner was cleared at the near post, but the ball was worked quickly back into the penalty area and, despite first-year shot-stopper Jamie Bennett making a save at full-stretch, Simmons was on hand to convert the rebound. The ball was squared to Sykut, who opened his account by guiding his finish into the bottom right-hand corner of the net from 12 yards out. Blues had their first sight of goal sixty seconds later when Joe Poxon held the ball up for Harrison Lamb, who smashed a 20-yard strike narrowly past the left-hand upright. After a quarter-of-an-hour, Julius Nwike released Lamb on the right and he stood a cross up for Nikolay Zlatev, who failed to connect with a header from six yards out. Despite those openings, Posh clinically netted their fourth goal after 18 minutes when the ball was arced in behind the Blues back-line. Sykut was delayed by the defence, but he was allowed too many touches inside the penalty area without being challenged before squeezing a shot past Bennett. Southend had chances to respond as Zlatev set up Nathan Woodley for a 25-yard shot that flashed over and Alfie Humphrey's quickly-taken free-kick sent Lamb clear on 26 minutes, but he got underneath his finish and the ball went over. Zlatev was also denied by a superb challenge from a defender after Woodley had danced down the left touchline a little later. Instead, on 35 minutes, Peterborough made it 5-0 as Sykut completed his hat-trick after gently lifting his finish over Bennett, and three minutes later Simmons added a sixth, stretching to divert a left-wing centre into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Humphrey had an effort blocked on the line and, on 42 minutes, Southend pulled one goal back when Poxon hung up a cross from the left-hand side of the penalty area and Zlatev stabbed in from close-range to make it 6-1. On the stroke of half-time, Posh restored their six-goal lead as the ball was sent in behind the Blues defence down the right-hand side and Simmons managed to complete his own treble by threading his finish beyond Bennett at the near post. 'We changed the shape a little bit to try and get more of a foothold in the game,' Heath explained. 'The boys will have learnt a lot more from the first half performance than if they had been winning the game 7-1. "It's important that they do learn from it, but the second half is a credit to the boys. "We speak about resetting and refocussing at times of success and at times of disappointment, and they used half-time as an opportunity to do that.' 'The performance and play in the second half probably deserved more than one goal. "Sis has hit the post and we got first contacts and second contacts from attacking set-plays; their goalkeeper made two or three good saves from that. The second half was much-improved in and out of possession,' he added. Barcelona starlet to consider exit offers this week
Barcelona are on their way back from South Korea after completing their preseason tour to Asia in Daegu with a 5-0 victory. When they return, the Blaugrana will be in the home straight of their preseason, and decisions are set to be made on the futures of some of their players. While that will likely involve a development plan for youngsters like Guille Fernandez, Toni Fernandez, Dro Fernandez, Roony Bardghji and Jofre Torrents, it could mean a permanent exit for Hector Fort. The 18-year-old spent last year in the first team, but was rarely trusted by Hansi Flick, and grew frustrated with his game time.
