Raja Raghuvanshi murder case to be made into film titled 'Honeymoon in Shillong'

India Today6 days ago
A film based on the sensational murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi is in the works, his family announced on Monday. Tentatively titled 'Honeymoon in Shillong', the film will trace the events leading up to his death during a trip to Meghalaya with his wife Sonam, who is one of the prime accused in the case. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Raghuvanshi residence in Indore. Raja's elder brother Sachin Raghuvanshi said the family had given their consent for the film to ensure that the truth reaches the public. "If we do not bring the story of my brother's murder to the big screen, people will not be able to know who was right and who was wrong," he said.advertisementAnother brother, Vipin, added that the film would also help present a balanced image of Meghalaya, which has been drawn into the spotlight following the crime.
The film is being directed by SP Nimbawat, who said the project aims to highlight how betrayal can have deadly consequences. "Through our film, we want to give a message to the public that such incidents of betrayal should be stopped," he said. Nimbawat confirmed that the script is complete, with 80 per cent of the shoot planned in Indore and the rest in parts of Meghalaya."Through the film Honeymoon in Shillong we want to give society a message. We want to make this film so that whatever happened to Raja, doesn't happen to anyone else. We are going to get Bollywood actors and the script is more or less ready. Around 20 per cent of the movie will be shot in Shillong. The main angle of the film will be the fight scene - how he was killed and what he suffered. The movie is slated for a worldwide release," said Nimbawat.Raja Raghuvanshi had travelled to Meghalaya with his wife Sonam in May. He went missing soon after, and on June 2, his mutilated body was recovered from a deep gorge near a waterfall in Sohra (Cherrapunji) in East Khasi Hills district. Police arrested eight people, including Sonam and her suspected lover, Raj Kushwaha. Three of the accused have been granted bail.Vipin Raghuvanshi, in a statement to reporters, said the family suspects more than five people were involved in the conspiracy. He claimed Sonam attempted to mislead police about her movements after the murder and that she had been in frequent contact with Raj Kushwaha in the days following Raja's death. "Had Raj been innocent, he wouldn't be talking to Sonam for hours," Vipin said, alleging that Sonam was sheltering in Raj's hometown when she was found. He also expressed frustration over Sonam's background not being fully disclosed before the marriage. "Her mother kept things from us. Had her father and brother known about Raj, they would have fired him from their factory," he added.- EndsTrending Reel

Bangkok cartel using airport-hopping tactics to smuggle marijuana: DRI official

Bhubaneswar: With Odisha being targeted as a potential destination for hydroponic marijuana, a Bangkok-based drug cartel is using airport-hopping tactics to smuggle the contraband into the state, a senior official of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) told TOI on condition of anonymity. After two failed attempts at Bhubaneswar's Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA), carriers are now suspected to be rerouting consignments through airports like Jharsuguda, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru to avoid detection. "Once they escape scrutiny at any of these airports, they use other modes of transport to deliver the consignment. Last month, a marijuana consignment was seized at Kolkata airport," the official said. In two recent busts, hydroponic marijuana worth a total of Rs 40 crore was seized. The carriers in both cases were unrelated and came from different states—three from Uttar Pradesh in the first case, and one from Gujarat in the second. "The carriers are only handed an air ticket at Bangkok airport and are instructed to carry the consignment. While they are aware of the contents, they never admit it when caught," the official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why is everyone rushing to get their hands on this new air cooler? News of the Discovery Undo Explaining the smuggling strategy, he added, "If a carrier is given a ticket to Bengaluru, they have no choice but to board that flight. After landing, their task is to evade airport scanners and security checks. This is how the airport-hopping tactic works. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they don't." On Sunday, DRI sleuths further revealed that hydroponic marijuana from Thailand—often dubbed the 'poor man's cocaine'—is becoming increasingly popular at rave parties in Bhubaneswar due to its affordability and powerful hallucinogenic effects. Unlike regular marijuana, this soil-free variant contains about 30% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), compared to just 3% in the common strain, making it far more potent. Based on interrogation of the arrested carriers, investigators are now trying to trace the main operatives involved in the cartel, both in Bangkok and Bhubaneswar, including the hotels they frequent and the local distribution network.

Indian dance troupe mesmerises packed auditorium in Israel

Haifa (Israel), Aug 4 (PTI) India enthusiasts in Israel descended on the northern Israeli coastal city of Haifa on Monday evening to witness a rich and impressive dance performance that blended the traditional Indian dance form of Odissi with modern styles, including fusion, Bollywood, urban dance and even some shades of Middle-Eastern influences. Young dancers from the Indian dance troupe Amaiza, founded by dancer and choreographer Nitisha Nanda, known for her appearances in leading reality shows 'So You Think You Can Dance India" and 'India's Got Talent", gave a captivating performance in front of a packed Beit Aba Hushi auditorium, with the 500 people in the audience often cheering in delight. The Embassy of India in Israel, in collaboration with the Haifa Municipality, the Indian Cultural Centre and the Port of Haifa, hosted the vibrant cultural event, 'celebrating the deepening friendship between India and Israel". The northern Israeli coastal city of Haifa has a deep connection with India, having been liberated from the Ottomans in 1918 by Indian soldiers, and Major Dalpat Singh is known as the 'Hero of Haifa" for leading a successful cavalry charge that shocked military historians by its sheer audacity. 'We were taught in school that the British liberated Haifa, but I later learned that it was Indian soldiers who shed their blood to free the city," Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav told the audience. 'Once a year, we gather at the city's cemetery to honour the Indian soldiers who gave their lives to protect us," Yahav said, emphasising the city's strong bond with India. 'The relationship between India and Israel, especially with the city of Haifa, is built on trust, mutual respect and lasting friendship," India's Ambassador to Israel, J P Singh, said. 'This cultural performance is dedicated to the people of Haifa, a city with which India shares deep historical bonds. During World War I, Indian soldiers sacrificed their lives in the Battle of the Liberation of Haifa," Singh stressed. Dalpat Singh made the ultimate sacrifice in that battle, which the Indian cavalry forces fought bravely under dire circumstances to inscribe their names in the last 'major cavalry charge in history". The performance in Haifa mesmerised the audience with its passion, precision and energy, showcasing both the traditional and contemporary spirit of Indian culture. It was an evening of colour, rhythm and movement — a powerful artistic experience that left a lasting impression on the Israeli audience. The event marked the festive launch of the troupe's Israel tour, with upcoming performances scheduled at Netanya on August 5, Or Akiva on August 6 and Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek on August 7. Gujarat HC grants relief to news anchor accused in defamation, atrocities case after complaint by senior Congress leader

The Gujarat High Court on Monday granted relief to an Ahmedabad-based news anchor in a case of defamation and atrocity, filed by Congress leader Dr Tushar Chaudhary, based on the assurance of the Additional Public Prosecutor that the journalist will be served a notice of 15 days in case the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest her. Justice Nirzar Desai was hearing the petition by Gopi Maniar-Ghanghar, anchor of Ahmedabad-based Nirbhay News Channel, for quashing and setting aside the FIR lodged at Tapi District, based on Chaudhary's complaint under Section 356 (Defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Chaudhary is the newly appointed Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Gujarat Assembly. The court order stated, 'Public Prosecutor Hardik Dave has made a statement before this Court upon instructions received by the Nikita Shiroya (SC/ST Cell Tapi Vyara) that… the investigation is at very initial stage and therefore, it would serve the end of justice if this Court records the statement of learned Public Prosecutor that in case, during the course of investigation, if the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest the present applicant, she will be given a clear notice of fifteen days and upon receipt of the notice…' The court further said, 'The applicant would be at liberty to avail appropriate remedy so as to take remedial measure to seek relief against her proposed arrest. Such a period would start from the date of receipt of the notice by the present applicant.' Chaudhary's complaint is also against Jagdish Mehta, group editor of Rajkot-based Headlines News channel. Chaudhary has alleged that the journalists had defamed him and his deceased father, former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary. In the FIR, the Congress MLA from Khedbrahma has alleged that in a show aired on July 22 on Nirbhay News, Ghanghar made an objectionable statement against him. He said Mehta consented to the statements, which were 'defamatory for him and the entire tribal community'. Ghanghar's advocate Utkarsh Dave said, '…Ghanghar… was the interviewer, who does not have control over what the other person is going to say… We will proceed with legal remedy in case the notice for arrest is issued.'
