Russia launches largest missile and drone attack on Ukraine since start of war
The strike comes after US Donald Trump said he would ramp up arms deliveries to Ukraine and accused his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of talking 'bullshit' on Ukraine.
AFP journalists in Kyiv heard explosions ringing out and drones buzzing over the capital during the barrage after air raid sirens sounded.
The latest strike, which regional officials said killed one civilian in the Khmelnytsky region, beat a previous Russian record of 550 drones and missiles set last week.
The air force said Russia attacked with 728 drones and 13 missiles, adding that its air defence systems intercepted 711 drones and destroyed seven missiles.
'This is a telling attack — and it comes precisely at a time when so many efforts have been made to achieve peace, to establish a ceasefire, and yet only Russia continues to rebuff them all,' President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media.
Zelenskyy, who arrived in Rome for meetings with the pope and president, called for allies to step up sanctions on Russia, particularly targeting its energy sector — an important revenue stream for the Russian war chest.
'Our partners know how to apply pressure in a way that will force Russia to think about ending the war, not launching new strikes,' Zelenskyy added.
Ukraine has repeatedly accused China of supplying parts and technologies central to the Russian drone and missile program, and urged the West to step up secondary penalties.
Kyiv's security services announced it had detained two Chinese nationals accused of attempting to smuggle missile technology out of the war-torn country.
Igor Polishchuk, the mayor of the western city of Lutsk whose surrounding region borders Poland, said fires had broken out at an 'enterprise,' but that no one had been reported killed or wounded.
The Russian defence ministry said its 'long-range' and 'precision' strike had targeted military airfield infrastructure claiming that 'all designated targets were destroyed.' There was no response to that claim in Kyiv.

Russia's latest record barrage comes just after the United States U-turned on an announcement that it would reduce some weapons supplies to Ukraine.
'It is quite telling that Russia carried out this attack just as the United States publicly announced that it would supply us with weapons,' the Ukrainian president's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, wrote on social media.
A representative of Ukraine's air force said new Ukrainian drones had played an important role in thwarting the Russian attack. Another official said most of the drones launched were decoys.
The Kremlin meanwhile it was unfazed about Trump's comments about Putin.
'Let's just say that Trump in general has quite a harsh rhetorical style in terms of the phrases he uses,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Two rounds of direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations since Trump returned to the White House have resulted in an increase in prisoner exchanges but no progress on securing a ceasefire, proposed by the United States and Ukraine.
The Kremlin has since said that for now it sees no diplomatic path out of the conflict, launched by Moscow in February 2022, and vowed to pursue its war aims — effectively seeking to conquer Ukraine and remove its political leadership.
Ukraine has also sought to increase its own attacks on Russia, with Moscow's defence ministry saying Wednesday its air defence units had downed 86 unmanned aerial vehicles, mainly over western regions of the country.
The exchange of aerial broadsides come as Russian forces are slowly but steadily gaining ground at key sectors of the sprawling front line in eastern Ukraine.
The Russian defence ministry announced the capture of another village, Tolstoy, on Wednesday in the eastern Donetsk region, which the Kremlin has claimed as part of Russia since 2022, despite not fully controlling it.
Ukrainian prosecutors in the region said Russian drone and bombing attacks in two towns in Donetsk killed eight civilians on Wednesday.
Officials published images showing the charred remains of two people who burned to death in their car, which officials said was hit by a Russian drone.
A one-year-old boy was killed in a separate Russian attack in the village of Pravdyne in the southern Kherson region, local officials announced.

Trump visits Texas flood zone, defends government's disaster response
US President Donald Trump has defended the state and federal response to deadly flash flooding in Texas as he visited the stricken Hill Country region, where at least 120 people, including dozens of children, perished a week ago. During a roundtable discussion after touring Kerr County, the epicenter of the disaster, Mr Trump praised both Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for their response, saying they both did an "incredible job." The Trump administration, as well as local and state officials, has faced mounting questions over whether more could have been done to protect and warn residents ahead of the flooding, which struck with astonishing speed in the pre-dawn hours on 4 July, the US Independence Day holiday. Mr Trump reacted with anger when a reporter said some families affected by the floods had expressed frustration that warnings did not go out sooner. "I think everyone did an incredible job under the circumstances," he said. "I don't know who you are, but only a very evil person would ask a question like that." Some critics have questioned whether the administration's spending cuts at the National Weather Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which coordinates the US government's disaster response efforts, might have exacerbated the calamity. Mr Trump officials have said that cuts had no impact on the NWS's ability to forecast the storms, despite some vacancies in local offices. But the president has largely sidestepped questions about his plans to shrink or abolish FEMA and reassign many of its key functions to state and local governments. "I'll tell you some other time," Mr Trump said, when asked by a reporter about FEMA. Before the most recent flooding, Kerr County declined to install an early-warning system after failing to secure state money to cover the cost. The Texas state legislature will convene in a special session later this month to investigate the flooding and provide disaster relief funding. Flood gauges showed the river's height rose from about a foot to 10.4 meters in a matter of hours, cascading over its banks and sweeping away trees and structures in its path. Kerr County officials say more than 160 people remain unaccounted for, although experts say that the number of people reported missing in the wake of disasters is often inflated. The dead in the county include 67 adults and at least 36 children, many of whom were campers at the nearly century-old Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer retreat on the banks of the river.

But an investigation from the Daily Mail has shed lights on the possible whereabouts of a figure linked to a series of ghastly attacks. It comes as Britain marks 20 years since the London bombings on July 7, 2005 this week, in which 52 people died and hundreds were injured. Lewthwaite, who was born in Northern Ireland and grew up in Aylesbury, was married to one of the suicide bombers, Germaine Lindsay. The now 41-year-old left the UK in 2009 and went to South Africa, before heading on to Tanzania in 2011 and then to Kenya. She is allegedly now based in Somalia, where she is part of an al-Shabaab cell - an al-Qaeda affiliate. "Despite not knowing her exact location, we believe she is active in terrorism activities under al-Shabaab control in Somalia," a source said. The White Widow was also reported to be the "main financier" of the cell, operating in a logistical role. Police previously crossed paths briefly with Lewthwaite when investigating a property in Mombasa in 2011. A British man called Jermaine Grant was arrested when fuses and ammunition were found stashed under a sofa - and he named Lewthwaite as the senior cell member. Advertisement While cops discovered she was in the adjacent apartment, the passport they found was in a different name. Lewthwaite had fled by the time they realised the passport was a fake. This was the last confirmed sighting of her. It is now alleged the officers accepted a bribe of five million Kenyan dollars (nearly £30,000) from her when they went to the apartment. Advertisement In 2018, there were alleged sightings in Yemen where she was said to be offering as little as £300 to the desperate families of young women to persuade them to become suicide bombers. She has not yet been charged with any of those offences. As a teenager she was seduced by the teachings of extremist cleric, Trevor Forrest, or Sheik Abdullah el-Faisal. Lewthwaite even visited him in prison in 2006, a year after the bombings.
