The Diddy trial: how AI ‘slop' from Pakistan is distorting reality

Around two dozen
YouTube channels are pumping out videos generated using
artificial intelligence with false claims about music mogul
Sean 'Diddy' Combs ' sex trafficking trial, racking up millions of views and profiting from misinformation, researchers say.
The flood of false content threatens to distort public perception of the musician's seven-week New York trial, where jurors
were deliberating on Tuesday to ascertain whether he acted as the ringleader of a criminal organisation that facilitated coercive sex marathons with escorts.
The sensational AI-driven channels have amassed nearly 70 million views from roughly 900 videos about Combs over the past year, according to data compiled by Indicator, a US publication investigating digital deception.
The videos typically feature AI-generated thumbnails showing celebrities on the witness stand alongside images of Combs, often paired with fabricated quotes.

One channel called Pak Gov Update uploaded a nearly 30-minute-long video titled 'Jay-Z Breaks His Silence on Diddy Controversy,' which features a thumbnail of the American rapper.

Why Jurassic World Rebirth screenwriter David Koepp doesn't like a world ‘too big'

An eyeball, big, yellowish and distinctly inhuman, stares raptly between wooden slats, part of a large crate. The eye darts from side to side quickly, alert as hell. Advertisement So begins David Koepp's script to 1993's Jurassic Park. Like much of Koepp's writing, it is crisply terse and intensely visual. It does not tell the director – in this case Steven Spielberg – where to put the camera, but it nearly does. 'I asked Steven before we started: 'What are the limitations about what I can write?'' Koepp recalls. 'CGI hadn't really been invented yet. He said: 'Only your imagination.'' In the 32 years since penning the adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel, Koepp has established himself as one of Hollywood's top screenwriters, not through the boundlessness of his imagination but by his expertise in limiting it. Koepp is the master of the 'bottle' movie – films hemmed in by a single location or condensed time frame. From David Fincher's Panic Room (2002) to Steven Soderbergh's Presence (2024), he excels at corralling stories into uncluttered movie narratives. Advertisement

Secret Service, known for protecting US presidents, now hunts cryptocurrency scammers

The scam began with a message, then a friendly exchange. A stranger directed the victim to a cryptocurrency investment site that appeared professional – slick design, charts, even customer support. The first deposit showed a modest profit. So did the next. Encouraged, the victim sent more, even borrowing money to keep up. Then, without warning, the platform stopped responding. The account balance disappeared. 'That's how they do it,' Jamie Lam, an investigative analyst with the US Secret Service, told law enforcement officials in Bermuda last month. 'They'll send you a photo of a really good-looking guy or girl. But it's probably some old guy in Russia.' Secret Service investigators traced the fraud to the domain name behind the fake investment site. Using open-source tools, they found out when it was registered, by whom and how it had been paid for. A cryptocurrency payment pointed them to another wallet. A brief VPN failure exposed an IP address. Lam is part of the agency's Global Investigative Operations Centre or GIOC, a team specialising in digital financial crimes. Their tools are software, subpoenas and spreadsheets, not badges or guns. 'It's not always that hard,' Lam said. 'Sometimes you just need patience.' Patience and digital tools have helped the GIOC seize nearly US$400 million in digital assets over the last decade, a figure not previously reported, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified discussing private conversations.

Why pickle juice is a trending cocktail ingredient, from margaritas to martinis

If you have a cocktail scene in your neck of the woods, you might have noticed the words 'pickle juice' appearing more often on drink menus. Advertisement Pickles and pickle brine have been ingredients that mixologists – and chefs – have played with for a long time, but they are finally getting a star turn in drinks menus around the world. Pickle juice is salty, tangy, acidic and sometimes a little spicy. It adds zing to all kinds of cocktails. 'Pickles are a great gateway into savoury cocktails,' says Camille Goldstein, managing partner of Muddling Memories, a hospitality company based in Brooklyn, in New York, that promotes drinks as an experience. 'The sweet-salty brine of a pickle really creates an interesting depth of flavour for your margarita, martini or even a highball,' she says. A pickleback is basically a shot of whiskey with a pickle brine chaser. Photo: Shutterstock A drink called the pickleback has been popular for years. Said to have originated at a Brooklyn bar called Bushwick Country Club, it consists of a shot of whiskey followed by a shot of pickle brine. Word spread.
