Fluminense sent Inter Milan packing from the Club World Cup on Monday with a 2-0 win in Charlotte that took the Brazilian side through to the quarter-finals.
German Cano's header from close range gave Fluminense an early lead in their last-16 tie and they then withstood an onslaught from the Italian side in the second half before substitute Hercules sealed their victory late on.
The Rio de Janeiro outfit, who qualified for the Club World Cup thanks to their Copa Libertadores triumph in 2023, become the second Brazilian side to make the last eight after Palmeiras had already sealed their quarter-final spot.
Captained by 40-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva, 'Flu' will now go to Orlando for a tie on Friday against either Manchester City or Al-Hilal.
"We knew they were not going to be easy opponents. Less than a month ago they were playing the Champions League final, but we played really well," Silva told broadcaster DAZN.
It is the latest victory for a Brazilian team against prestigious European opposition at the tournament in the United States, after Botafogo defeated PSG and Flamengo got the better of Chelsea in the group stage.
"This is a very important victory for our fans, for all of Brazil, for my country, for South America," said Jhon Arias, the livey Colombian winger who was named man of the match.
"We are not only representing Fluminense but a whole continent and we are really pleased with what we are doing in this World Cup."
- 'Not our day' -
Inter came to the US off the back of their 5-0 defeat by PSG in the UEFA Champions League final at the end of May and with a new coach in Cristian Chivu.
They did not fully convince during the group stage despite topping their section and they found themselves trailing inside three minutes before only just over 20,000 fans at the Bank of America Stadium on another hot afternoon.
A cross from the Fluminense right by Arias took a deflection off Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni and the ball then bounced awkwardly before veteran Argentine striker Cano arrived to head in through the legs of goalkeeper Yann Sommer from close range.
Ignacio thought he had made it 2-0 before the interval, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
Sommer then tipped a fine curling strike by Arias around the post just after the hour mark, before Inter began to turn up the pressure in an attempt to avoid exiting the competition.
Stefan de Vrij prodded wide from close range after captain Lautaro Martinez had headed down a cross, and the latter then saw a fine shot on the turn from the edge of the box come back off an upright.
Martinez had also been denied by Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio moments earlier, and confirmation that it would not be Inter's day arrived in stoppage time.
On as a substitute, Hercules pounced on a falling ball and drove into the box before firing low into the corner.
Federico Dimarco then hit the woodwork at the other end as Fluminense held out for the victory to keep South American hopes of glory at the tournament firmly alive.
"We never gave in. We kept going until the end but it was not our day," Chivu told DAZN. (AFP)

Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund as Mbappe finds net

Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund as Mbappe finds net Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe he scores his team's third goal with an overhead kick. Photo: AFP Young striker Gonzalo Garcia scored his fourth goal of the Club World Cup and Kylian Mbappe his first as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 on Saturday to set up a mouth-watering semi-final against European champions Paris Saint-Germain. Garcia, 21, put Madrid ahead from close range early on a hot afternoon at the MetLife Stadium just outside New York City, and Fran Garcia then doubled their lead before the midway point in the first half. Dortmund never seriously threatened a comeback before a remarkable late flurry of activity, with Maximilian Beier pulling one back in the 93rd minute and Mbappe getting Madrid's third with a stunning overhead kick. Serhou Guirassy then completed the scoring with a penalty after Real's Dean Huijsen was sent off, before the full-time whistle finally blew. Xabi Alonso's side find themselves in the semi-finals despite Mbappe still not having started a game at the tournament. The France superstar, who did not play at all during the group stage due to illness, will now hope to start for the first time when Real take on his old club in a fascinating last-four showdown at the same venue on Wednesday. Whoever emerges victorious from that tie will be the favourites to go on and win the inaugural edition of FIFA's expanded competition, with Chelsea taking on Fluminense in the other semi-final. This match, watched by a near sell-out crowd of 76,611, was a repeat of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final which Real won 2-0. But while they needed two late goals to claim victory then, this time they seemed to have got the job done early after Alonso sprang something of a surprise with his tactical line-up. The new Real coach had deployed a three-man central defence in previous games at the tournament, but this time he went with an orthodox back four as Aurelien Tchouameni stepped up into midfield. Julian Brandt was not far away from giving the German side the lead, but instead it was Real who went in front in the 10th minute. Garcia had scored three times in Madrid's first four matches at the Club World Cup, including the winner against Juventus in the last 16. He stole in between two defenders to meet an Arda Guler cross at the near post and make it 1-0 to the delight of the vast majority of the crowd. The summer heat contributed to the slow pace of the contest, but Real also effectively killed off Dortmund's hopes by scoring again in the 20th minute. Patient build-up play on the right involving the imperious Jude Bellingham and Gonzalo ended with the two full-backs combining as a low Trent Alexander-Arnold cutback was swept in by Fran Garcia. They should have scored more goals before half-time, with Bellingham -- deprived of the chance to face his brother Jobe who was suspended -- firing just wide after a nice dummy by Vinicius Junior. The latter sent a shot wide when he tried to surprise Gregor Kobel from the edge of the box, while Tchouameni cracked an effort off the frame of the goal just past the hour mark, albeit there was an offside earlier in the move. Dortmund could have made a real comeback attempt had half-time substitute Beier scored at the other end just before that, although their hopes were briefly raised late on. Beier did make it 2-1 three minutes into time added on as he controlled a poor clearance and fired a low shot past Thibaut Courtois. Mbappe, who had come on for Bellingham midway through the second half, then scored his 44th club goal since the start of the season with an overhead effort at the back post from a Guler cross. Then Guirassy was brought down at the other end, leading to centre-back Huijsen being sent off. Guirassy scored the penalty to make it 3-2 with his 38th of the season and fourth of the competition. Nine-man PSG beat Bayern Munich for place in semis

Nine-man PSG beat Bayern Munich for place in semis Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele celebrates scoring his team's second goal against Bayern Munich. Photo: AFP Paris Saint-Germain reached the Club World Cup semi-finals as Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele goals earned the nine-man European champions a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in a gripping battle on Saturday. The French treble winners had Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez sent off in the final stages but managed to oust the German giants in Atlanta. Bundesliga champions Bayern, who lost Jamal Musiala just before half-time with a horror ankle injury, shared an intense and even battle with the Parisians and had two goals ruled out for offside. Bayern had won their last four matches straight against PSG, including a 1-0 Champions League victory last November, before Luis Enrique's side hit their peak. "I think we showed our character with two less players, we showed our personality, and we are strong also like that," PSG's Achraf Hakimi told reporters. "We showed that we want to be continue in this competition and go forward." Players and nearly 67,000 spectators observed a minute of silence in honour of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically died in a car crash on Thursday. It was an emotional moment, especially for a PSG side with five Portuguese players in the squad, including starters Vitinha, Joao Neves and Nuno Mendes. Luis Enrique began with leading Ballon d'Or candidate Dembele on the bench, as he continues his comeback from a quadriceps injury, but Bayern playmaker Musiala was fit to start. It was FIFA's expanded tournament's biggest heavyweight clash thus far and Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said on the eve of the game he would pay to watch a match he described as a "perfect storm", because of the teams' similar high-pressing, attacking styles. The air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium also produced the perfect conditions for a pulsating game, lit up by supremely talented dribblers on both sides, as well as two elite goalkeepers in Gianluigi Donnarumma and Manuel Neuer. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hit the side netting after a razor-sharp PSG counter and forced Neuer into an excelent save, while Donnarumma saved twice from Olise. Dayot Upamecano headed home from Olise's free-kick in first-half stoppage time but the defender had strayed offside and it was disallowed, while England captain Harry Kane sent a header off-target when well placed. - Musiala horror injury - Unfortunately Musiala suffered a gruesome ankle injury before half-time as he fell following a collision with Donnarumma, with the goalkeeper appearing distraught in the aftermath. Bayern's 39-year-old stopper Neuer produced a sensational save to deny Barcola early in the second half as PSG threatened. With 20 minutes remaining, Luis Enrique sent on Dembele to make the difference and avoid extra-time. Dembele came inches from doing just that when Neuer gave the ball away outside his area and the Frenchman lunged to try and roll into the empty net, but it trickled just wide of the post. Eventually 20-year-old Doue found the breakthrough as Kane gave the ball away and PSG attacked in numbers. Doue, who burst into the limelight in PSG's run to Champions League glory, fashioned some space on the edge of the box and flashed a low strike home at the near post. Bayern were given hope as they hunted for an equaliser when PSG defender Pacho was sent off for a high tackle on Leon Goretzka after 83 minutes. Kane headed home from an offside position before PSG substitute Hernandez was dismissed for an elbow. Despite their numerical disadvantage Dembele hit the crossbar before sealing their victory after Achraf Hakimi's run through, and the Frenchman paid tribute to Jota by copying his video-gaming celebration. "It was very difficult to hear the news," Marquinhos told DAZN. "We have got Portuguese players in the dressing room and they were with him only a few weeks ago playing in the Nations League... we wanted to cheer them up." Bayern coach Kompany said he was proud of his team's performance despite their elimination. "It could have been 2-0 to us, but it didn't go our way," said Kompany. "In the first half we showed them who we are and they had problems with us," said Bayern substitute Thomas Mueller, who played his last game for the club. PSG will face Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals on Wednesday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. (AFP)
