Three of the deceased — two women and a 16-year-old boy — were identified as 'dhonds', special devotees of the goddess. The stampede, perhaps the first in post-Liberation Goa's history, occurred on the second day of the five-day jatra that began on May 3. Some injured people continue to be admitted to the hospital for medical treatment.
The Shree Devi Lairai Devasthan committee stated on Thursday that the state administration fell short in making the necessary arrangements for the jatra.
Temple president Dinanath Gaonkar said that the procedure was delayed by the mamlatdar in making arrangements for the jatra. Gaonkar said that the committee should not be held responsible for the tragedy as it worked tirelessly.
On the day of the jatra, Gaonkar said, the mahajan urged police, who were few in number at the spot of the eventual stampede, to make one-way points for entry and exit for smooth flow. 'We informed the PSI present at the spot.
The managing committee cannot reach everywhere, but wherever the managing committee was present, the situation was controlled by us,' said Gaonkar.
The rest of the law-and-order situation has to be dealt with by the administration, he said. 'All things cannot be done by the committee,' said Gaonkar. 'It is the responsibility of the administration and the panchayat to take this seriously. Govt does not involve the village panchayat. They have not done anything, and whatever has happened is the result of this. This is what I think.'

Patiala cops demolish drug trafficker's illegal house

1 2 Patiala: As part of its intensified anti-drug campaign, Patiala police on Tuesday demolished an unauthorised house built by the family of a notorious female drug trafficker on government land in Rorikutt Mohalla, a locality identified as a drug hotspot. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Varun Sharma confirmed that the family had been involved in 26 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The illegal structure was constructed by Seema, her husband Sompal, and other family members on land belonging to the public works department. SSP Sharma said that Seema alone faces 16 NDPS cases, Sompal has four, and Seema's mother-in-law is named in approximately six cases. The department concerned had requested police assistance to remove the encroachment, and security was provided during the demolition. Under the Punjab government's 'War Against Drugs' campaign, SSP Sharma said the action sends a strong message to drug traffickers to abandon the illegal trade and choose a better path. He reiterated that Patiala police will continue to take strict action against such elements under the zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Are Ditching Finger Pricks with This Breakthrough Monitor Zakdavi Undo At the same time, SSP Sharma emphasised the police's commitment to rehabilitating individuals trapped in drug addiction. Asked for a toilet that flushed...: Indian-origin British man Harpinder Chauhan recounts ordeal at US detention center, was called 'chihuahua'

Indian-origin British businessman said he was denied a proper working toilet, his medicine at ICE detention center. Indian-origin British businessman who had lived in the United States since 2016 was detained by the ICE in February after his barbecue franchise in Florida bankrupted him and he got into trouble with his taxes. In June, he was deported to the UK. But the three months he spent at several ICE detention centers were no less than a nightmare, the 56-year-old businessman told the Human Rights Watch. After his arrest, he was shackled when he was taken to the center where there were too many detainees and no bed, no showers or privacy. 'I used my shoes as a pillow. We had no cups for water, just a toilet with a half-wall for privacy,' he said. His family provided the ICE officers with his asthma inhaler, insulin medicine but those were never delivered to him. Chauhan said he spent the following months in three detention centers: Krome, FDC and BTC with the condition of each of them worse than the others. 'They told us if we kept asking for a toilet that flushed, they would create a problem we wouldn't like,' he said. At one center, he collapsed and had to be hospitalized. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy the Dip: Top 5 Dividend Stocks with Growth Potential Seeking Alpha Read More Undo His son Aaton told Human Rights Watch that he received a call from a relative of his father's cellmate but the center staff did not inform him about anything. When he finally managed to get the details of the hospital and called there, they told him no patient by the name of 'Harpinder Chauhan' was there. Later, he was told that the ICE authorities asked the hospital not to disclose any information, as he was in custody. Chauhan recalled another incident where an officer made fun of his last name and called him 'chihuahua' instead of Chauhan. In May, a judge ruled for his removal to the UK but the ICE officers said they lost his passport and he could only come home to the UK in June. Chauhan said he did not enter the US illegally but had an E-2 investor visa as he launched several small businesses. He filed for permanent residency through an approved EB-5 visa petition, but after his barbecue franchise got bankrupt, he got into tax troubles that landed him with the ICE.
