Pease airport in New Hampshire will see increased military aircraft activity. Here's why.

CBS News02-07-2025
People in the seacoast area of New Hampshire are being warned that they may see an increase in military aircraft operations in the coming weeks near Portsmouth International Airport at Pease.
According to the airport, there will be additional military aircrafts through July 15.
The aircrafts will be in the area for Atlantic Alliance 2025, which is described as "a large-scale, multinational military training exercise involving U.S. Navy and Marine Corps forces and allied partners from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom."
The naval integration exercise is used to rehearse various scenarios to help prepare different units from states spanning North Carolina to Maine.
As part of the event, the airport "will support an increase tempo of flight activity." That will include "amphibious assaults, naval maneuver exercises, and expeditionary support missions."
"We recognize that this increased military activity may cause temporary noise disruptions for our neighbors. But we ask everyone to keep in mind, Portsmouth International Airport plays an integral role in global security," said Paul Brean, executive director of the Pease Development Authority. "Even though this training exercise will encompass an enormous geographic area off the eastern seaboard, our airfield is a critical strategic asset, similar to our role in real-world events. As a joint-use commercial military airport, Portsmouth has an unwavering commitment to the Department of Defense and our global partners."
Most of the increased takeoffs and landings will take place during the day, though the airport said it's possible there will be some flights at night.

Florida man missing after taking train to summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire

Search teams are looking for a 79-year-old Florida man who went missing from the top of New Hampshire's Mount Washington after taking a train to the summit on Wednesday. William Davis of Jacksonville and his wife took the Cog Railway up the 6,288-foot mountain. He was last seen near the observation deck at about 3:20 p.m., according to his wife. "From there no one knows where he went," the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said in a statement. A Mount Washington State Park employee was able to reach Davis by phone on Wednesday, and it appeared he had gotten lost but wasn't very far from the summit. But authorities say an hour-long search did not locate Davis and he stopped answering his phone. Two dozen rescuers and a drone team searched until 2 a.m. and started again early the next morning. Deteriorating weather conditions suspended the search on Thursday night, but it resumed Friday morning. Temperatures on the summit Friday will be in the 40s, with winds gusting as high as 85 mph. The forecast on Saturday calls for a chance of rain and highs in the mid 50s. The Cog Railway brings more than 100,000 visitors to the summit of Mount Washington annually. It was founded in 1869 and was the first mountain-climbing railway in the world. The three-hour round trip via train offers riders a one-hour layover at summit, where people can visit an observation desk, museum and gift shops.

Cannon Mountain retiring iconic aerial tram after 45 years, plans "next-generation" replacement

Cannon Mountain is saying goodbye to its current aerial tram system this fall after 45 years. But the New Hampshire ski and hiking area says something new is in the works. Currently, the tram system is able to accommodate 80 passengers. The two cable cars can cover a distance of one mile in less than seven minutes, offering stunning views of the White Mountains on their way up and down the 4,080-foot summit. "She's aged gracefully, but like all legends, she deserves a dignified retirement," Cannon Mountain general manager Jace Wirth said in a statement. "It's time to begin writing the next chapter." Cannon has not announced a final day for the current tram system, but it's expected to stop running after the fall season. Cannon Mountain aerial tramway replacement Cannon Mountain launched the country's first aerial tramway in 1938. The current tram system started running in 1980 and has carried more than nine million passengers. Now, Cannon said it has secured $27.2 million from the state to start planning a "next-generation tram system." The next step in the process is a structural analysis that will consider renovation plans for the existing towers and terminals that make up the tram system. "The Cannon tram is a symbol of New Hampshire," Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Commissioner Sarah Steward said. "Governor Ayotte has declared 2025 the 'Year of New Hampshire State Parks,' and this project ensures we continue investing in our most treasured places. We're excited for what's ahead." What to know about the Cannon Mountain tram The tram was only running on weekends and holidays during the winter season, but operates daily in the summer. The first tram of the day goes up at 9 a.m., and the last tram down is at 3:45 p.m. Round-trip tickets are $29 for adults at off-peak times, and $34 at peak times. Kids 5 and under ride free, while New Hampshire senior citizens are free during the middle of the week. On Valentine's Day in 2016, the two tram cars got stuck 40 feet off the ground because of a mechanical problem. No one was hurt, but rescue crews had to rappel 48 passengers to safety in sub-zero temperatures. New Hampshire
