4 candidates who could grab OKC Thunder's 3rd two-way deal
Being the second-youngest NBA champion, the Thunder will have the rare luxury of roster continuity. Everybody who was under contract for their historic 68-14 regular-season run is under contract for next season, too. Outside of some bottom depth chart movement, expect the same rotation.
The one roster spot still left open is the third two-way spot. Brooks Barnhizer and Branden Carlson are signed to the other two spots, but one remain. After they completed the Summer League, plenty of possible candidates had their moments.
Let's look at three candidates who could receive the Thunder's third two-way contract. The deal allows players to appear in 50 games and split time between the NBA and G League:
Chris Youngblood
Out of all the undrafted rookies, Youngblood stood out the most in the Summer League. The 23-year-old is a sharpshooter with a quick release. He gained more minutes in the rotation as the two-week event progressed. There's always a demand for shooters. He could get a shot because of it.
Youngblood averaged 12.4 points in five Las Vegas games. He shot 52% from 3 on five attempts. Even though the sample is small, he was also a high-volume outside shooter at Alabama. He wasn't afraid to let it fly from deep in a variety of ways.
Malevy Leons
Familiarity might help Leons. After he went undrafted out of Bradley, he signed with the Thunder. He was a training camp invite last year and even earned an NBA deal for a brief moment before being waived. The 25-year-old spent most of the season in the G League.
Leons spent most of the Summer League as a starter. He had his moments, especially on the defensive side. The 6-foot-9 forward has good physical tools but remains raw as a half-court player. Still, there's obviously some intrigue there from the Thunder as he enters his second year with the franchise.
Viktor Lakhin
A popular theory that circulated among Thunder fans was about Lakhin. He went undrafted out of Clemson. Some believe that happened because a torn foot tendon plummeted his draft stock after he received some second-round buzz.
Lakhin had a career season at Clemson before the May injury. He averaged 11.4 points and 56.4 rebounds. Because of the injury, he didn't play in the Summer League. The Thunder knew that when they signed him. The speculation is that the only reason they'd do that was to ensure they'd sign him to a two-way deal. Remains to be seen how true that theory is.
Payton Sandfort
Everything said about Lakhin can be copied and pasted here. Two shoulder surgeries to fix torn labrums caused Sandfort to go undrafted out of Iowa. Nonetheless, the Thunder liked the upside enough to add him to their Summer League roster, knowing he wouldn't play.
Considering Sandfort had surgery in April and May, don't expect him to be cleared for a while. November has been viewed as a target return. He was a sharpshooter in his four years at Iowa. He shot 34% from 3 on 7.5 attempts last season. You always need those types of players at any level. Let's see if it's enough to warrant a two-way spot before he's even suited up for the Thunder.

Phoenix Suns bring back guard Jordan Goodwin after he's waived by Lakers
The Phoenix Suns have acquired guard Jordan Goodwin, who most recently was with the Los Angeles Lakers and formerly played for Phoenix. ESPN's Shams Charania first reported the news on July 23. Goodwin, 26, was claimed off waivers and agreed to a $2.3 million veteran minimum deal with only $25K guaranteed, and the remainder is fully protected if not waived by Jan. 7, per ESPN's NBA front office insider Bobby Marks. Goodwin was released by the Los Angeles Lakers alongside Shake Milton to bring in veteran guard Marcus Smart, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, signing him for their biannual exception of a two-year deal for $11 million. Goodwin fills one of the Suns' two remaining roster spots for 15 guaranteed deals, and helps with their point guard void. He originally came to the Suns from Washington in the Bradley Beal trade in June 2023. He was waived at the trade deadline in February 2023, signed with the Memphis Grizzlies on a 10-day deal, then signed with the Lakers in September 2024. Jeff Teague quickly walked back on his baseless LeBron steroid accusations
LeBron James is set to enter his 23rd NBA season, and at 40 years old, he's still an All-Star caliber player. It's an astonishing career that spans multiple eras. But instead of choosing his favorite LeBron era, former NBA guard Jeff Teague sent a podcast discussion off the rails with a wild PED accusation about James. In the latest edition of the Club 520 Podcast, Teague was asked to choose the best version of James. And he said "Miami Heat 'Bron" without hesitation. And then to back up his argument, he went on to claim that James was using steroids. Like, out of nowhere. Teague said that once the league started testing for HGH, James suddenly had to sit out for multiple weeks with a mysterious back ailment only to come back skinnier. Teague told the story and was like, "I was in the league. I remember." Except none of that happened. The NBA didn't start testing for HGH until the 2015-16 season, and James was already back on the Cavaliers at that point. In his entire time with the Heat, LeBron never missed more than six games in a given season. LeBron did miss eight games in 2014-15 due to a back issue, but he was on Cleveland at that point. And, again, the injury predated the league's HGH testing program. Shortly after the comments went viral, Teague took to his Instagram to clarify that he was just joking. Yeah, safe to say that Teague heard from his agent or lawyer after that one.

Celtics Summer League head coach Matt Reynolds impressed with Hugo Gonzalez
This year, the Boston Celtics used their first round pick on Hugo Gonzalez, selecting him with the 28th overall pick and the Spaniard showed good early returns in the summer. During the Summer League in Las Vegas, Gonzalez averaged 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while head coach Matt Reynolds took notice of the growth he showed in his game. Speaking to reporters following the conclusion of Summer League, Reynolds praised Gonzalez's growth and how he worked to become more comfortable throughout the summer. Whether it's high energy on defense or his ability to learn and understand the offense as the summer league went on, Reynolds liked what Gonzalez showed when given the opportunity. "I think particularly with the offensive system we were running, it's something he's probably not used to playing," Reynolds told reporters. "So whether that's playing with pace and freedom that our group really pushed or in half court, having different reads whether it was on-ball switching or off-ball, different ways our offense was effective I think he became more comfortable with that. Defensively, he's a high-energy player and we really wanted to accentuate those strengths, with each game he became more confident in that as well." Reynolds believes Gonzalez will have a mixed bag of offensive and defensive responsibilities to work on heading into training camp, but overall, the summer league head coach was impressed with the late first-round pick. It may be hard to envision a role for Gonzalez as a rookie but with Jayson Tatum likely to miss most of the season, head coach Joe Mazzulla could allow players to step up and earn a bigger role in what will be a much different season than the previous two in Boston.
