Despite lower earnings than a year ago, Five Below (NASDAQ:FIVE) investors are up 92% since then
These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the Five Below, Inc. (NASDAQ:FIVE) share price is 92% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 18% (not including dividends) in the same period. That's a solid performance by our standards! In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 3.9% lower than it was three years ago. Although Five Below has shed US$303m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns. AI is about to change healthcare. These 20 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10bn in marketcap - there is still time to get in early. There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS). During the last year, Five Below actually saw its earnings per share drop 10%. Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors. We think that the revenue growth of 11% could have some investors interested. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best. You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image). It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Five Below will earn in the future (free profit forecasts). A Different Perspective It's nice to see that Five Below shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 92% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 5% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Five Below has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of. But note: Five Below may not be the best stock to buy.
