Time of India31-05-2025
Just new variants of the coronavirus causing COVID are emerging, the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) has approved a new vaccine against COVID. The vaccine has been manufactured by Moderna.
"Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved mNEXSPIKE (mRNA-1283), a new vaccine against COVID-19, for use in all adults 65 and older, as well as individuals aged 12-64 years with at least one or more underlying risk factor as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)," the pharma maker has said in a press release.
COVID killed 47,000 Americans in 2024.
"The FDA approval of our third product, mNEXSPIKE, adds an important new tool to help protect people at high risk of severe disease from COVID-19," said Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna. "COVID-19 remains a serious public health threat, with more than 47,000 Americans dying from the virus last year alone. We appreciate the FDA's timely review and thank the entire Moderna team for their hard work and continued commitment to public health.

What is mNEXSPIKE?
mNEXSPIKE is a COVID-19 vaccine meant for folks who've already had a previous COVID shot. It's mainly for people aged 65 and older, or anyone between 12 and 64 who's at high risk of getting really sick from the virus. Just a heads-up though—like all vaccines, it's not a guaranteed shield for everyone, but it does offer an extra layer of protection for those who need it most.
"You should not get mNEXSPIKE if you hada severe allergic reaction after a previous dose of either mNEXSPIKE, SPIKEVAX (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA), or any Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or to any ingredient in these vaccines," Moderna has warned. The side effects are trouble breathing, swelling of face and throat, fast heart beat, rashes, dizziness and weakness.
Moderna expects to have mNEXSPIKE available for eligible populations in the U.S. for the 2025-2026 respiratory virus season, alongside Spikevax and mRESVIA, the Company's approved respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurates advanced cancer treatment facilities in UP's Varanasi; robotic surgery, radiation machines & CT scanner installed under CSR

VARANASI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated two state-of-the-art linear accelerators (radiation machines), a Mantra robotic surgery unit, and a CT scan machine on Saturday for patients at the Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC) and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH). The addition of these new machines is expected to significantly improve the speed, accuracy, and quality of treatment. The hospital received these medical devices recently under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. Dr Satyajit Pradhan, Director of MPMMCC and HBCH, said the advanced medical devices, provided through CSR at a total cost of Rs 73.30 crore, will elevate the treatment capacity of both hospitals to new heights. This move is expected to not only enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of cancer treatment but also act as a lifeline for underprivileged patients fighting for life with limited resources. The initiative aims to strengthen regional healthcare and set an inspiring example for cancer care in India. "We are grateful to all the donors who stood with us in this battle against cancer; this would not have been possible without their support," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Radiation therapy remains a crucial part of cancer treatment, with most patients requiring it at some stage. Currently, the hospital has four radiation machines, which were insufficient to meet the demand, leading to treatment delays. To address this issue, two new linear accelerators have now been installed. The Uttar Pradesh government funded one machine with ₹31.63 crore, while Power Grid Corporation of India Limited contributed Rs 26.42 crore under CSR for the other. The operation of these machines is expected to reduce waiting times and improve the quality of life for cancer patients, significantly enhancing the hospital's cancer management capabilities. The Mahamana Cancer Centre has also become the first hospital in Purvanchal to offer robotic surgery for cancer treatment. With support from the ICICI Foundation, the unit was established with ₹10 crore. This technology enables complex surgeries to be carried out with greater precision, shorter operating time, and minimal risk. The Mantra Robotic Unit, developed under the "Make in India" initiative, will be especially effective in treating cancers of the urinary system, head and neck, and abdomen. Patients are expected to recover more quickly and spend less time in hospital, easing pressure on the healthcare system. Timely and accurate diagnosis is key to successful cancer treatment. To support this, a new 128-slice CT scan machine has also been installed, funded by Kotak Mahindra Bank under CSR with ₹5.25 crore. This addition is set to speed up the diagnostic process and reduce the waiting list significantly. It will particularly benefit patients from economically weaker sections who cannot afford costly private diagnostic services. Petroleum is the black stuff that comes out of the ground when you go drilling for oil. Petrolatum is a highly refined substance that is safe for human use according to almost every major health authority including FDA, Canada Health, and EU. He did accept that the similar-sounding words can cause confusion among regular people way too often. "Unfortunately, petrolatum is synonymous with petroleum jelly, which is why everyone keeps saying it's petroleum, but it's not the same thing.
