The DBL felicitated - Raghunath Subudhi, Ramesh Mohapatra, Babana Maharana and Kartik Bhoi - for their exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to the sacred tradition of chariot-making.
As part of the fourth edition of the 'DSP Expert Rath Shilpkar Samman', launched in 2022 under 'Saluting the Expert' initiative, the awardees were selected by a jury of veteran craftsmen and cultural experts headed by head shilpkars - Vijay Mahapatra, Nurusingha Mahapatra, and Narayana Maharana, ensuring that only the most deserving artists are recognised.
DBL officials said another major highlight of this year's edition was distribution of around 1,000 miniature Rath replicas to the children of dealers and channel partners to spread awareness on cultural heritage among the younger generation.
Dalmia Bharat is also producing a short film that captures the inspiring journeys of the honoured shilpkars, bringing forth the legacy for wider audiences, their skill and expertise, dedication, perseverance and a sense of devotion towards the service of the Lord.

Oil India in talks with ExxonMobil, Total, Petrobras for joint bids in new auction round
New Delhi: State-owned Oil India Ltd is in talks with global exploration and production (E&P) majors, including ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies and Petrobras, to jointly explore hydrocarbon blocks in India, said two people in the know of the developments. Oil India's one-on-one talks with these companies are largely focused on a possible partnership for the 10th round of auctions under the country's Open Average Licensing Policy (OALP-X). In this round, the government plans to offer 2.5 lakh sq. km. area for exploration. The OALP-X round was launched in February and the deadline for submission of bids is 31 July. According to one of the people cited above, there is likelihood of an extension of the deadline. 'Talks are underway with major global players, Total, ExxonMobil and Petrobras. It is being looked at if Oil India can get a partner for the upcoming 10th round of auctions for deep and ultradeep water blocks," said the person mentioned above. 'The partner would also have the option to come together for blocks bagged in the previous round (ninth)." Queries sent to Oil India, TotalEnergies, Exxonmobil, and Petrobras remained unanswered till press time. Apart from this, Oil India is also scouting for a technical service partner in its old and legacy oilfields, where it is looking to increase production. In an interview to Mint in May, Ranjit Rath, chairman and managing director of Oil India, had said several overseas national as well as private oil companies have shown interest in jointly bidding for blocks in the upcoming auction round. 'We have several engagements currently going on," Rath had said. 'With some of them, we have got NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) signed, and we are having data exchanges," the chairman said. In February, the Maharatna company had signed a memorandum of understanding with Petrobras, Brazil's state-owned oil firm, to collaborate in the exploration and production of hydrocarbon resources in India's offshore regions. Global collaborations are critical to bring in expertise for deep and ultra deepwater blocks. 'For shallow water and onshore exploration and development, most of the companies have the required technologies. But in the case of deep and ultra deepwater blocks, there are challenges in every stage, exploration, development and production, due to the ocean weight, the pressure that the ocean creates," said Gaurav Moda, partner and energy sector leader at EY-Parthenon India. 'Only a few global players have the expertise to explore and produce oil from such blocks. They also require different kind of equipment compared to shallow water and onshore exploration and extraction." Noting the urgency in India's aim to harness its domestic reserves, Moda said that rather than trying to indigenously develop such technologies, striking a partnership with a global player would be more beneficial. Under the OALP-IX round, Oil India bagged nine blocks, adding 51,000 sq. km. to its exploration portfolio. Three of the blocks--one each in Cambay, Mahanadi and Assam Shelf basins--were won in partnership with its public sector peer Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd (ONGC), while another six were acquired on its own. ONGC, together with UK-headquartered BP plc and Reliance Industries Ltd, won the bid to explore Saurashtra basin under OALP-IX, marking BP's foray into India's upstream oil and gas space. Oil India's move to scout for global partnerships is in line with the government's push to attract overseas investments in the upstream space in a bid to raise local production and reduce the country's dependence on imports. During his visit to Vienna for the 9th OPEC International Seminar earlier this month, union minister for petroleum and natural gas Hardeep Singh Puri met chiefs of global energy giants and discussed potential collaborations in light of India's ambitious E&P plans. The minister had said India is set to explore nearly 2.5 lakh sq. km. in new offshore and onshore areas under OALP-X, which will make it one of the world's largest bidding rounds. In FY25, Oil India produced 3.46 million tonne (MT) of crude and natural gas, amounting to 3.25 MT of oil equivalent. This took its total hydrocarbon production to 6.71 MT of oil equivalent, the highest ever for the company. It aims to achieve oil and gas production of 10-12 MT of oil equivalent by the end of the decade. In 2020, under the third round of auctions, Oil India had won two blocks in the Andaman basin, touted as an oil-rich region.

Kolkata tourists help Digha earn Rs 100 crore during first Rath Yatra Season, boosting local economy
KOLKATA/DIGHA: The first season of Rath Yatra in Digha has yielded a net cash inflow of Rs 100 crore for the coastal town, a final count by various trade bodies and the Jagannath temple management has revealed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The business boost has been felt across sectors — hotel and hospitality, transport and local commerce — and stakeholders say the temple is paving the way for a churn in Digha's economy. They expect the annual festival to be a major driver of growth. The temple itself received about Rs 17 lakh as pranami during the two-week festival, which will be used for 'maintenance and further development work', said Radharaman Das, a trustee of the Digha Jagannath Dham and vice-president of Iskcon Kolkata. According to his estimate, over 12 lakh devotees visited Digha for Rath Yatra. Local businesses say the chariot festival turned the post-summer vacation period into another 'peak tourist season'. 'We get maximum tourists during summer and winter vacations when schools and colleges are closed. The Rath Yatra came just after the summer vacation and we saw a steady inflow of new groups of tourists from the last week of June to the first week of this month. For us, the festival turned out to be a source of additional revenue during a period that was considered off-season till last year,' said Ashok Samanta, president of New Digha Saikatshree Market Traders' Association. The 1,100-odd stalls on Saikat Sarani along the beach selling local merchandise together earned an estimated of Rs 5 crore, he said. Of the Rs 100-crore revenue that Rath Yatra generated, a significant portion went to the hotel and hospitality industry and allied sectors. Bipradas Chatterjee, joint Secretary of Digha Sankarpur Hoteliers Association told TOI that during the Rath Yatra season, on average, 12 rooms per hotel were rented out for anything between Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000 per room. 'Based on this, the income from hotel room rentals in Digha over the past 10 days stands at around Rs 30 crore. The average hotel bookings per day stood at around 22,000,' said Chatterjee. Besides, there were about 10,000 flying tourists who came in for a few hours each day and returned by night. Somnath Ghosh, an official in charge of the Digha bus depot, said revenue from buses stood at about Rs 50 crore during the festival. 'Tourists came from different parts of the state, especially Kolkata. Besides, some tourists reserved buses. Each reserved bus fetched us Rs 35,000 per day,' he added. According to restaurant owners in the town, transactions worth nearly Rs 15 crore took place over the past 10 days for snacks and meals. The Rail Coach Restaurant, a train compartment turned into an AC restaurant adjacent to Digha railway station was a top draw for tourists. Biplab Senapati, who runs this restaurant, said, 'The crowd started pouring in about two days before Rath and their number swelled gradually over the next 10 days. Our daily transactions surged and we had to roped in 10 additional workers to attend to customers.' Murtaza Shah, a resident of Jatimati village near Digha's helipad ground, who has been selling conch and shell products for over three decades, says the new temple has come as a blessing and will set them off on the road to prosperity. 'Digha saw a lot of development in the past five years and now the Jagannath temple is drawing devotees throughout the week,' he said.

Visually-impaired man conferred D.Litt at Ravenshaw
1 2 Berhampur: Ravenshaw University, Cuttack, on Tuesday conferred (Honoris Causa) degree on Bijay Kumar Rath, a 75-year old visually-impaired man from Berhampur for spreading education among visually-challenged students across the state. President Droupadi Murmu, who was the chief guest at the convocation, presented the honorary degree to Rath, in the presence of several other dignitaries, including governor Hari Babu Kambhampati and chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Accompanied with his younger brother, Rabi, Rath he went in a wheelchair to the dais to receive the degree from the President. "In appreciation of his contribution to strengthening the Braille learning system in the state and fortifying the ecosystem of knowledge-acquisition from visually-impaired students, the university conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Literature (Honouris Causa)," said Sanjay Kumar Nayak, vice-chancellor of the university. Rath said the honour is recognition of my works towards betterment of the visually-impaired persons in the society. "I am very happy to get a prestigious degree from Ravenshaw University and I will always be grateful for it," he said.
