
Why the new "Superman" movie became right-wing kryptonite
The big picture: The hero's origin story, arriving on Earth from a dying planet, has long been compared to the story of refugees or immigrants — a connection the film's writer and director, James Gunn, recently endorsed.
The film, which is set to release on Friday, has become a political flashpoint amid President Trump's sweeping immigration crackdown that has inspired nationwide protests and numerous lawsuits.
Context: For Gunn, the newest installment of the Superman franchise is "the story of America."
Speaking to The Times, Gunn described the story as one of "[a]n immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost."
Gunn, also the co-CEO of DC Studios, is far from the first person to draw that connection. DC Comics, honoring World Refugee Day in 2019, said the story of the superhero, created by two men born to Jewish immigrants, "is the ultimate example of a refugee who makes his new home better."
According to a DC timeline, the beloved hero's arrival on Earth was briefly described in his first comic appearance in 1938, where it was explained that a scientist on "a distant planet ... destroyed by old age" sent his son to his new home planet on a spaceship.
Friction point: But Gunn's take received swift backlash from the right.
Greg Gutfeld, in a Monday segment on Fox News Channel's "The Five" featuring the chyron "Superwoke," described Gunn's comments as a "terrible analogy."
Kellyanne Conway also weighed in, saying, "We don't go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology on to us."
And Jesse Watters added, "You know what it says on his cape? MS-13."
Podcaster Ben Shapiro, in a video titled "Superman is Going WOKE - You Know What That Means...," said Gunn was "fine" for a prior superhero film — Guardians of the Galaxy — but described Superman as "more serious property."
Shapiro criticized the "left in Hollywood" as out of touch with the everyday American.
Right-wing commentator Tim Pool also weighed in, by responding to Gunn's brother, actor Sean Gunn (who also stars in Superman), after he expressed his support for immigrants.
"We know when they say immigrant, they mean illegal immigrant," Pool said in an Instagram video.
He added the comments were another example of the Gunn brothers "insulting the right" ahead of film's release — though Pool said he'd still see the movie.
Widely followed X-account End Wokeness shared a screenshot of a headline featuring James Gunn's comments with the caption, "Hollywood literally never learns."
Zoom out: Gunn's Superman joins a group of new adaptations of classic characters who have been criticized as "woke," such as Disney's live-action versions of The Little Mermaid and Snow White, which also sparked a wave of racist reactions.
And this isn't the first time Superman — or other comic book characters — have angered those on the right.
In 2021, DC's announcement that Superman's catchphrase would be evolving in a more globally inclusive way to "Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow" (formerly "Truth, Justice and the American way") inspired similar ire.
That same year, the news that Superman's son would come out as bisexual in a comic was also not received well by voices on the right, though his was far from the first LGBTQ + comic-book story.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has also been the target of anti-woke backlash, with female-led films like Captain Marvel and The Marvels caught in the crosshairs.
The other side: James Gunn brushed off the criticism his comments spawned, telling Variety he thinks the movie is for "everybody," adding, "I don't have anything to say."
He added, "I think this is a movie about kindness, and I think that's something everyone can relate to."
Nathan Fillion, who portrays Green Lantern in the film, replied with a laugh and a smile, saying, "Somebody needs a hug. It's just a movie, guys."

If new ‘Superman' movie feels like an attack, you have a guilty conscience
Spoiler alert: This column discusses the plot and characters of the 2025 movie 'Superman' in detail. Superman has always been more than just a comic book character. He's an idea and an ideal, an avatar for truth and justice — and the American way, a patriotic 1942 wartime addendum to his famous radio serial motto. I'm not a comic book guy, and I've also always found the Man of Steel a little boring — too powerful, too generic. While we've seen a couple decent live-action versions of the character (TV's Tom Welling and Tyler Hoechlin, in particular), the two most classic portrayals aren't so super to me: George Reeves was way too old for the role, and Christopher Reeve was a total stiff. But actor David Corenswet and director James Gunn have finally gotten it right. This is a Superman we care about, mostly because he cares so dang much about us. Even though he comes from outer space, there's no question Clark Kent's home is Kansas — the state we love for its all-American wholesomeness. Everything Superman does in the new movie is about protecting the people of his adopted planet. Time and again, he moves heaven and Earth to make sure the bad guys cause as little death and destruction as possible — even swooping in to save a sweet little squirrel in one particularly memorable moment. The last silver-screen Supes, Henry Cavill, certainly looked the part. But although he's a tremendous actor, his director Zack Snyder had no idea what the character is supposed to be about, framing him as a dour, aloof, Ayn Randian Ubermensch who fails to prevent uncountable human deaths in his wildly violent battles. That's not the Superman I know. However, Ubermensch is exactly how his arch nemesis Lex Luthor sees himself — and the new movie is the first time the character is legitimately scary. Michael Rosenbaum created a marvelously complex version of Luthor in the series 'Smallville,' but since we see him grow up over time, we come to understand how he gets so twisted — he's as much antihero as he is villain. Nicholas Hoult's Luthor is nothing but a screaming void of egotism, reeking of impotence and self-doubt despite his vast wealth. He's transparently a stand-in for Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, creating a literal army of 'rage monkeys' to ruin Superman's reputation in social media. And despite the fact that this movie was in the works long before Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis teamed up to throw immigrants who don't even face any criminal charges into a swamp detention camp with its own comic book name, it isn't difficult to draw a parallel from that obscenity to Luthor disappearing the politically inconvenient to tiny cells in an inaccessible pocket dimension. Hollywood and the American way So, sure, the new 'Superman' is about politics — and not terribly subtle about it. It's no surprise, either, that agitators throughout the MAGA ecosystem are freaking out over it. Even though Trump and Musk's bromance came to the ugly end we all knew was inevitable, and maniverse stars such as Joe Rogan and Andrew Schulz are experiencing acute buyer's remorse over Trump 2.0's cruelty and ineptitude, some right-wing influencers are still losing their minds that the movie puts the black hat on a billionaire using his lucre to imprison his enemies and flood Americans' media networks with disinformation. I don't think the new film is a triumph for the ages. There is zero place for profanity in a Superman movie. And I actually agree with far-right professional complainer Ben Shapiro that it's overstuffed, more carnival ride than movie. However, Shapiro predictably went off the deep end when he whined about that old conservative bugaboo of the entertainment industry: 'Hollywood cannot say 'the American way' because they don't believe in the American way,' he said in his slam review. 'They don't believe that America is unique. They don't believe in these American basic values and principles and rights.' I don't know what movie he saw, but Gunn's 'Superman' champions American-style truth and justice for all — including for Luthor, whom our hero rightly turns over to the law instead of going vigilante on him. It reminds us constantly that we are defined by our choices, not by our DNA or where we come from. The movie's most touching scene takes place at the Kents' modest Kansas country home, where his parents emanate love for their adopted son — their son — and the values he embodies. Truth and justice should be for each and every human being — not just the ultrawealthy, or just those well-off enough to be able to afford health care. So if you see a murderous, lying oligarch getting his comeuppance for wreaking havoc on the rest of the world as 'woke' — well, I'd suggest you reconsider your personal concept of the American way.

But that first comment — about Superman's foreign origins — is the one that set off some pundits on the right. Fox News commentator Jesse Watters joked on air: 'You know what it says on his cape? MS-13.' Ben Shapiro blasted Gunn and the Hollywood left for being out of touch with everyday American audiences: 'The reality [is] that Hollywood is so far to the left that they cannot take a core piece of Americana and just say it's about America.' But, Grant Morrison — author of the seminal comic book series All-Star Superman — said the conservative backlash ignores the leftist origins of the world's most famous superhero. Morrison sat down with Today, Explained host Sean Rameswaram to talk about where Superman came from, how the character has evolved, and why he will endure. What did this character mean to you? I grew up on the west coast of Scotland next to an American naval and nuclear base. My parents were anti-nuclear activists. My father was a World War II soldier who became a peacenik. So, my big fear in the world was the atom bomb, and I associated it with the Americans, but the Americans also brought the comics. Then I discovered Superman. And although I knew no real Superman was coming to save me from an actual atom bomb, metaphorically he really solved a lot of problems for my head when I was a little kid. Those are the primal roots for me, and they're quite deep. So yeah, getting a chance to do that character, sitting here overlooking that same stretch of water where we did the protests…To write All-Star Superman kind of defies the forces of entropy. If anything survives in my career, it will be that one book. Who was the Superman that you created in that series? We went for an older Superman. The basic idea was: What if Superman was dying and he had a year to live? Basically, it's a part of Lex Luthor's scheme to send Superman to the sun, and the solar radiation overcharges Superman's cells, so they begin to decay and die. Basically, Superman's dying of cancer. What would this man do in the last 12 months of his life to leave the Earth a better place than he found it? Were you surprised to find out that James Gunn wanted to relaunch this character and relaunch an entire cinematic universe with your story about a dying Superman? James didn't necessarily take the dying part. His is a younger Superman. But I think he certainly took the character as we decided to define it, and he saw something that he could work with. Instead of Superman having flaws, let's present a fictional character who doesn't have flaws. You know, he has problems of his own. He still can't get the girl. He still works for a boss in an office, but he's Superman. He's a kind of everyman whose life happens at a much higher scale. He's got an unruly dog, but his unruly dog can laser his own dinner and cook a steak. His unruly dog can fly through buildings, but he's still dealing with an unruly dog. In previous attempts people have asked: What would Superman be like if he was in the real world? Which to me is an absurd question. The only existence Superman has in the real world is as a comic book or movie character, and that's where he is most useful and most functional, as far as I'm concerned. He's a metaphor. He is an allegory. He stands for everything that is good in us. It sounds like there have been at least some iterations of this character throughout his near-century of existence — from your dying version to this ideal version, to this all-powerful version. But I believe Superman even started as a bit of a tough guy, a headbasher, and maybe even a left-wing revolutionary. Can you tell us about the non-Kryptonian origins of this character, and how he came to be on Earth? Well, he arrived in Cleveland, Ohio. He was created by two teenagers, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who'd met at school. Jerry was the writer and Joe was the artist. They wanted to work for newspapers. Newspaper syndication was the place to go for cartoons back then. They were working on this notion called 'The Superman.' The original version was an evil bald guy who eventually became Lex Luthor in the Superman story. But after a few tries, they hit on this fabulous notion of: Let's give him a wrestling costume with a cape so that we can track his movement across the panels, and make him very colorful so that he's memorable. The greatest addition to the design was to put his monogram on his chest so that the character's entire identity was summed up in this very simple advertising motif that people can remember and people can also wear and partake in being Superman. It was created by two young kids who were the sons of immigrants — European immigrants, Jewish boys — and this was their vision. Superman was a do-gooder. He was here to help people. He'd come from a distant world, but thought the only use for power and strength was to help the downtrodden and the oppressed. Early issues of Action Comics depict a Superman who's very much an outlaw. He goes after corrupt union bosses. He goes after mine owners. He goes after politicians who are corrupt. Superman later was seen as a messianic figure of hope, which I don't really like, because I think he's a fighter, he's a scrapper. He gets into fights on behalf of the little guy. He gets bloodied up and he gets up again. You shoot him [with] a tank shell, and he gets up again. Through the years, that changed quite radically. The socialist figure of the early years hit 1942 and suddenly it was war, and Superman became incredibly patriotic, and that's where the 'Truth, justice, and the American way' thing first appears. Then, in the 1950s, Superman changes again completely. You're dealing with guys coming home from the war, domestication, and living in suburbia. So Superman becomes a family drama, but on a titanic scale. He has friends from the future who visit and cause trouble. He has a cousin who survived the destruction of Krypton, he has a dog, and he has a monkey. So Superman then, to me, was probably at his peak, but he was representative of post-war masculinity trying to adjust to a world of relatives and not being married. Those stories were obsessed with the relationship with Lois [Lane]. In the 1960s, he becomes a cosmic seeker. He almost goes back to his roots, and we have stories where he is fighting for Native American land rights, he's up against polluters, and very much back to the activist Superman. And so it goes. In the 1980s, he's a yuppie. In the 1990s, they kill him in order to make it interesting, then bring it back as a soap opera set around the fictional newspaper, the Daily Planet. And into the 2000s, you get the work that I did. It's funny to hear you lay out this history in which Superman at one point is something of a socialist warrior, because all of these pundits who are mad about James Gunn saying that Superman's an immigrant, if they really knew the history here, there's so much more they could be mad about. Absolutely. As you say, if anyone had bothered to look at the history of Superman, they'd see that he was always an immigrant created by immigrants. He represented that experience, but he was assimilated. I mean, he was an American. He'd been raised by American parents. So that was very important as well. And I think the combination of these two qualities is what maybe drives people mad, because they want it to be either one thing or another, but Superman's trying to embody everyone. It's funny, a thing that we talk about the first half of the show is that depending on how tuned into the news you are, you can see a lot of what's going on in the world today in this movie. But of course, this movie wasn't made this week. It was made a year ago. Yeah. The meetings about this movie probably started five years ago. Do you think there's something about the nature of Superman that makes him timeless? I definitely believe that. I mean, we are talking about the history of Superman, which goes back to 1938. Superman has outlived his creators. He's also outlived the people who took over from his creators, and the next generation of the people who took over from his creators.

The director of ‘Superman' calls his hero an immigrant. Critics call him ‘Superwoke'
A baby arrives in America from a home in turmoil. A family in Kansas raises him. And he struggles to balance two identities. Comic books, TV shows and films have repeatedly recounted these details from Superman's backstory over the past 87 years. But the director of the latest big-screen adaptation drew backlash recently when he stated something that's been said many times before: Superman is an immigrant. 'I mean, Superman is the story of America,' director James Gunn told The Times of London. 'An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.' Coming as the Trump administration steps up its immigration crackdowns, the comments quickly sparked criticism from right-wing media personalities. A Fox News banner blasted the new movie as 'Superwoke' as pundits offered their takes. 'We don't go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology on to us,' said former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway. Dean Cain, an actor who starred for years on TV in 'Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman' and is now a conservative commentator, told TMZ he didn't like Gunn's comments and speculated that the director's decision to invoke immigration while promoting the film could be a costly mistake. So far, it hasn't been. The movie, released by CNN's parent company Warner Brothers Discovery, finished No. 1 on its opening weekend with $122 million in domestic ticket sales and continues to draw large audiences. And longtime fans and historians of the comic books note that Gunn's comments weren't superimposing a new storyline on the beloved hero. 'The idea of Superman being an immigrant, or maybe a refugee, has been part of the character's mythos since the very beginning. It's not something he invented or tried to shoehorn in,' says Danny Fingeroth, author of 'Superman on the Couch: What Comic Book Heroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society.' The first Superman story, published in 1938, stated he was sent to Earth from Krypton, a fictional doomed planet. 'It makes him not an immigrant of choice. It makes him an immigrant of necessity…a refugee,' Fingeroth says. 'He's someone who comes to Earth and to America, to then blend in and become as American as mom, the flag and apple pie.' And, Fingeroth says, there are a lot of good reasons why these details are such a key part of Superman's story. Take the comic's creators, for example. Artist Joe Shuster and writer Jerry Siegel were both the children of Jewish immigrants who'd fled rising antisemitism in Europe. 'Just given their backgrounds and their sympathies, I think it's always been important that Superman comes from somewhere else,' Fingeroth says. The Cleveland-based duo wrote Superman's story as World War II loomed. The first page of his story describes him as 'champion of the oppressed.' 'The clouds of fascism are rolling through Europe. There's echoes of it here in America … and Superman's early adventure are fighting for the little guy, fighting for abused women, fighting for exploited mine workers, fighting against corrupt politicians,' Fingeroth says. Even before America was fighting Nazis in World War II, Superman was fighting them on comic book pages, he says. Through it all, 'Superman is the immigrant embodying the best of American qualities, even though he's from somewhere else.' It's a connection historians and immigrant rights advocates have made, too. More than a decade ago, comic book historian Craig This organized a panel at Wright State University highlighting the immigrant backgrounds of Superman and Wonder Woman. The idea resonated with the college students he was teaching at the time, he says. 'People were coming to this large public research university, maybe thinking that they were an outsider, and then said, 'Oh, wow, look, I can see these individuals as role models. I want to try and fit in. But really, it's going to be my differences that make me survive and be successful, not just here on a college campus, but also here in the United States.'' In 2013, the organizations Define American and the Harry Potter Alliance launched a social media campaign inviting people to share selfies and their family's immigration stories with the hashtag #SupermanIsAnImmigrant. Last week that campaign's creators pushed back against critics who've been accusing Gunn of politicizing his take on Superman. 'You can't politicize the truth,' Define American founder Jose Antonio Vargas and narrative strategist Andrew Slack wrote in The Hollywood Reporter. 'Superman has been an 'illegal alien' for 87 years.' A one-time undocumented immigrant himself, Vargas says today he sees an even more important message in the superhero's story. 'I think for the first time, because of this movie, because of what's happening in the country … I have people who have never talked to me about immigration talking to me about immigration,' he says. 'So we have people's attention. Now I think the question is, what are they going to do?' Of course, Superman's origin is just one part of his story. And in the initial comic, it was also a convenient plot device, Fingeroth says, allowing the authors to explain his powers. In some versions, Fingeroth says, 'Superman's immigrant status is not mentioned.' The hero could be from Metropolis or Kansas or anywhere, 'depending on the era, depending on the creators.' Each version of Superman comes with its own plot twists. In the new film, for example, the backstory of the superhero's parents takes an unexpected turn. Superman sometimes changes with the times. And sometimes different audiences perceive him differently. Many superheroes are outsiders. And one common thread that gives them such staying power is that people from many different walks of life connect with the characters, says Fingeroth, a longtime editor of Spiderman comics. 'Their mythos and storylines and origins speak to various aspects of the human condition, and that makes them appealing. Their adventures are enjoyed by people from a wide variety of political and social and religious backgrounds,' he says. 'And yet, the myths are so powerful that they all take it as their own.' In other words, all of us can see ourselves in Superman. And that may be a reason why so many people have such strong opinions about the character even today. Last week the White House's social media accounts shared an AI-generated image based on the new movie's poster, depicting President Trump in the title role. A few days later, though, it wasn't the Man of Steel that the Trump administration referenced on social media when it drew a connection between a beloved sci-fi character and today's undocumented immigrants. Instead, the Department of Homeland Security shared the iconic image of ET's bicycling silhouette. The text superimposed over the moon: 'GO HOME.'
