Why Stormzy's New Movie Absolutely Had To Be Shot On iPhone

Forbes19-06-2025

On Wednesday, June 18, Apple unveiled its latest Shot on iPhone movie, 'Big Man'. It is a short film starring Michael Omari, better known as music icon Stormzy in his first leading dramatic role, at a stylish and glitzy screening in London — you can also watch it on YouTube.
Stormzy, Klevis Brahja, Jaydon Eastman, the main cast in "Big Man".
It was shot entirely on a series of iPhone 16 Pro handsets, and the more you learn about the film, the more it made the use of the phone inevitable. The film is about Tenzman, a musician whose star has been on the decline for some years and an encounter with two teenage boys. The short film covers a lot of emotional distance in its roughly 20-minute length.
A question-and answer session followed the premiere of the movie at BFI Southbank, at National Film Theatre 1, a gorgeously comfortable and effective cinema, as well as a prestigious location.
Director Aneil Karia (himself already an Academy Award winner) talked about the improvisational nature of the film. On its own, that makes the tiny iPhone a better bet than the '30-kilogram' Hollywood movie cameras, as Karia put it. The iPhone was better to get up close and capture subtle moments without overwhelming the actors. Especially since two of the protagonists are teenage boys, both of whom are brilliant and utterly natural, by the way.
A small, handheld iPhone is much less intimidating — though the array of around half a dozen iPhones positioned around the car that's the setting for much of the film might have been more noticeable.
Stuart Bentley, Director of Photography, talked about the set-up, which for the most part was the iPhone in a handheld gimbal unit, with the addition of different extra lenses as needed to permit long tracking shots and so on.
Even with these additions, the iPhone 16 Pro would have been much less intrusive than other cameras, allowing the director a more elegantly informal approach.
Bentley also said, 'We're pushing the camera to the very limits of what it's capable of, and we've found it to be really resilient. And obviously it's tiny so you can get the camera into positions where you may not be able to get a traditional camera which has been really liberating for us and in ways that allow you to be really inventive and creative with your camera choices.'
The movie is well worth seeing, from a dramatic perspective alone, but the use of the iPhone 16 Pro makes it a technical marvel as well.

Lena Dunham underwent 'painful metamorphosis' after end of Girls

Lena Dunham underwent a "painful metamorphosis" after her TV show Girls ended in 2017. The 39-year-old was catapulted to fame in her mid-20s when she created and starred in the popular TV show, and during its run, she had to withstand backlash over the show's content, face scrutiny over her appearance and deal with the fallout of controversial comments. After Girls came to an end in 2017 after six seasons, Dunham was exhausted and stepped back from public life, going to rehab over an addiction to prescription anxiety medication and relocating to London. Reflecting on that time, she told The Sunday Times, "I felt like all the maturing and changing that had been kept at bay by the experience of being in that cocoon of the show was suddenly happening at a speed that was overwhelming. It was a painful metamorphosis... I definitely took an intentional break (from public life)." While Girls depicted four twentysomethings growing up in New York, the writer/director admitted that she wasn't able to mature herself while the show was on the air. "Being on the Girls set all the time was like living in a fake New York," she explained. "I spent my whole twenties pretending to go out in the city and pretending to live, so I didn't actually know how to do it at all. When the show ended I didn't know what direction to move in. I wasn't young enough to be out and feeling fun and free. I felt fatigued, yet didn't know how to mature (in New York). I didn't know how to grow up there." After moving to London, the Catherine Called Birdy director met musician Luis Felber and they got married in 2021. Their love story inspired Dunham's new TV show, Too Much, which will debut on Netflix on 10 July.

Kelly Rowland Posts Behind-the-Scenes Snap from Her Role as a Coach on 'The Voice UK'

Kelly Rowland will appear as a coach on the upcoming season of The Voice UK Filming for season 14 of the British singing competition series is underway, but a premiere date is not currently known The Destiny's Child alum has previously appeared on several singing competition showsKelly Rowland is buzzing about her latest gig. On Monday, June 30, the 'Motivation' singer, 44, shared footage of herself on set as season 14 of The Voice UK's filming is underway. 'New gig, who dis…' she wrote over an Instagram Stories video of her walking past a row of empty coaches' chairs as crew members talked amongst themselves in the background. At the bottom of the clip, she tagged the long-running singing competition series. The Voice UK announced season 14's celebrity coaches at the start of the month in a June 3 social media post. 'Kelly… can you handle this? 😏,' the caption began, making a clever play at Destiny's Child's 2001 hit single, 'Bootylicious.' The post continued, 'Meet the Coaches newest recruit when The Voice UK returns ✌️.' Rowland's photo appeared in the announcement, along with a shot of Tom Jones, and Tom Fletcher & Danny Jones, also known as British pop stars McFly. All appeared in an Instagram Reels post that the Mea Culpa actress posted to her Instagram Stories on Monday. 'Have you heard the news?' was written over the video, which channeled a Mean Girls inspired whisper to the tune of Missy Elliott's 'Pass That Dutch' — the song famously associated with viewers learning all the juicy details about The Plastics. In the video Rowland shared, the McFlys whispered to each other, making surprised faces before sharing the news with a stunned Jones, who then told before he passed the information along to the 'Dilemma' star. The clip ended with her making a funny face before she smiled and walked off. The Voice UK isn't Rowland's first go at lending her expertise to a British singing competition — she also had a hand in putting Little Mix together on The X Factor UK. 'I just remember seeing all the ladies, and I don't know if it's because of my DC days and just feeling what that chemistry would feel like, but I knew what they felt like in my soul, and I felt like I knew what they would look like altogether and I went off my instincts, to be honest,' Rowland said in a November 2022 interview. Rowland has also appeared on The X Factor US, The X Factor UK Interactive, and The Voice AU. Additionally, Rowland will serve as a guest judge on Netflix's upcoming music competition series Building the Band. Contestants will have to come together to be bandmates without ever seeing one another. Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean will serve as the host while Tony winner and former Pussycat Dolls star Nicole Scherzinger will serve as mentor and judge. Prior to Payne's death, Rowland told PEOPLE he was "absolutely hilarious" during their time working on the show. "I didn't know how funny he was, so I'm getting to know him, and he is so cool," she said in August 2024. Building the Band premieres on Netflix on July 9. Read the original article on People

Queen Elizabeth Reportedly Left Heartbroken by Prince Harry's Wedding Snub

Queen Elizabeth Reportedly Left Heartbroken by Prince Harry's Wedding Snub originally appeared on Parade. Queen Elizabeth was reportedly left heartbroken by Prince Harry's actions leading up to his 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle. A royal biographer claims the couple chose to break from royal tradition while planning their nuptials, which left the monarch feeling sidelined and deeply hurt. Subsequently, the queen's cousin claimed Elizabeth had hoped to play a more active role in the ceremony but was ultimately kept at a distance from key decisions by the couple. In a Substack post, royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith cited the queen's late cousin, Lady Elizabeth Anson, who claimed Harry was 'rude to [Elizabeth] for 10 minutes' in February 2018. The conflict came during a meeting between the monarch and her grandson to discuss wedding plans as he prepared to marry Meghan that May. Anson alleged the monarch's concerns about the wedding while speaking to Bedell Smith in 2019. In the post, she wrote, "When we spoke two weeks before the May 19 wedding, Liza had just heard from the Queen. 'The Number One Lady—I call her Jemima—says the jury is out on whether she likes Meghan.'' 'My Jemima is very worried," Anson reportedly told Bedell Smith. She alleged, 'Harry is besotted and weak about women. We hope, but don't quite think she is in love. We think she engineered it all.' Parade Daily🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Anson was quoted, "It's worrying that so many people are questioning whether Meghan is right for Harry. The problem, bless his heart, is that Harry is neither bright nor strong, and she is both." Per The Daily Mail, Bedell Smith claimed the monarch was upset about a second element of the wedding ceremony. 'The Queen was dismayed that Harry had asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the wedding service in St. George's Chapel without first requesting permission from the Dean of Windsor.' The queen's cousin said the Duke of Sussex had reportedly 'blown his relationship with his grandmother. She said she was really upset." Bedell claims Anson was "shocked" when the queen shared the context of the meeting with Harry. "I had no idea about the conversation, that he was rude to her for ten minutes. She was trying to find out about the wedding dress, and Meghan wouldn't tell her.' The royal author also claims the monarch was concerned about the relationship between Meghan, Prince William, and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. She feared the trio wouldn't be able to move past their differences and work together effectively for the monarchy, "particularly the two girls." Kate and Meghan's relationship reportedly got off to a rocky start, with personality differences and royal pressures causing tension. One major incident involved a disagreement over bridesmaid dresses before Meghan's wedding, which sparked headlines and public speculation. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary in May. Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022, reconciling with Harry before his wedding ceremony. Lady Elizabeth Anson died in 2020.
