
Tribute to famous festival in denim, long hair, old footage
Now one of the longest-running folk fests in North America, this dearly loved four-day weekend is a highlight of our town's cultural calendar.
There's a lot of information here, but mostly this doc catches a mood, a feel, immersing us in a totally 1970s scene of denim and long hair, mandolin players and barefoot dancers, tired toddlers and happy dogs.

The doc is a suitably shaggy look at the soon-to-be summer tradition.
Put together from Super 8 footage shot in 1975 for a Winnipeg Film Group project that was shelved because of technical issues, When We Became Folk Fest incorporates scenes of performances, workshops and festival crowds, mixing in sound recordings from the Folk Festival collection and audio overlay of later conversations with musicians, volunteers and staff.
Nikkel and Barber worked with sound designer Andy Rudolph and John Prentice, who was part of the original '75 crew. Perhaps picking up on the co-operative ethos of its subject, the film's opening credits also cite the contributions of 'a lot of good folks.'
Nikkel has done evocative work engaging with archival material in films such as On the Trail of the Far Fur Country. While working within the limitations of this found footage — and the visuals can feel a little repetitive — he and Barber still manage to put a distinctive and contemporary spin on the material.
There isn't a strong narrative line — it's more about vibes — but the doc gently touches on a cluster of related ideas.
First off, there's an indirect but still vivid portrait of the late Mitch Podolak, who founded the fest in 1974 along with Colin Gorrie and Ava Kobrinsky.
The film starts with a printed quotation from former Free Press writer Ted Allan, who calls Podolak 'a transcontinental telephone screamer and cajoler … a strategist, romantic and catalyst for an event that has become a North American institution.'
From some footage of the man himself, as well as interviews with friends and colleagues, we get a sense of the tenacity and ingenuity needed to keep any grassroots not-for-profit arts organization going.
'First you tell the lie, then you have to make it happen,' says one commentator, describing Podolak's idiosyncratic, audacious and seat-of-the-pants approach in those tricky early years.
The inaugural fest was a free three-day event at Birds Hill Park in 1974, made possible by the abundant funding around Winnipeg's centennial celebrations.

The footage captured by the Winnipeg Film Group in 1975 suffered the then-fatal flaw of out-of-sync images and sound: today's technology was able to save it.
A cranky Winnipeg Tribune columnist suggested the festival was fine as a one-off, but it would be 'folly' to run it as an annual event. Fortunately, Podolak and his dedicated collaborators had other ideas.
While some outsiders wondered why the festival was located seemingly in the middle of nowhere — Podolak told American musicians who didn't know where Winnipeg was to head to North Dakota and then keep going — it turned out there was an advantage in being far from the big centres.
With its homegrown scrappiness and strong community feel, our underdog music festival became influential, with festivals following in places such as Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, eventually forming a western circuit.
Folk music and money aren't an easy fit, the documentary suggests. There was initially a lot of debt, and cash crunches might be solved by bottle drives or emergency pass-the-bucket appeals.
And once the festival started charging for admission, the organizers needed to be able to fence off the site. Volunteer Lorna Hiebert recalls trying to dissuade fence-jumpers with moral arguments. The following year they hired a wrestling team to patrol the perimeter.
There's also plenty of talk about the bugs, the heat and the rain (cue extensive footage of soggy music fans wrapped in plastic tarps). As Podolak says, 'Weather is weather.'
Other commentators suggest bad weather could even be a good thing: people found solidarity in surviving a big old Prairie thunderstorm together.
The sound system could be iffy in those early years, as a few people point out, but there was a real sense of intimacy and connection.
Stages were low, maybe a metre off the ground, with the audience starting a metre or two away. And maybe even more important than the performances were the workshops, the impromptu jamming and the casual conversations.

There are questions about how to define folk music, how to promote it, how to convince funders it is a worthwhile artform.

We hear Indigenous music, Celtic music, bluegrass, Mississippi blues, protest and union songs. We see footage of Tom Jackson, Sam Chatmon, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Floyd Westerman, Cathy Fink and Duck Donald.
This isn't really a performance film, though. Fundamentally, it's a lovely and life-affirming tribute to a temporary town created for one weekend a year.
As Hiebert suggests, the Winnipeg Folk Festival is about 'people looking for a beautiful world.' That makes this documentary just as necessary now as it was in 1975 — maybe even more so.
The 7 p.m screening tonight (Friday, July 13) features a Q&A with filmmakers Kevin Nikkel and John Prentice, moderated by John Einarson.

Home County Folk League returns to London for 49th season
Preparations are underway for the return of the Home County Folk League this Saturday. (Lauren Stallone/CTV News London) Preparations were underway Friday morning at Victoria Park in London Ont., as the Home County Folk League is set to make its return this Saturday for its 49th season. The festival took a brief pause in 2024, due to rising costs. Iconic Canadian band, Bedouin Soundclash will take the stage, along with several other talented performers. 'I think there's a lot of people that are going to say they love them from Soundcloud or on the radio,' said Darin Addison, Home County artistic director. 'There's other people that are going to say 'I don't know that band' and then they're going to hear a song and say 'oh I know that song.'' Organizers said the festival will look a little different this year. 'We have one stage set up right in the middle of the park,' said Anna Donaldson, Home County chair. 'Its going to be a one-day festival here on one stage.' In addition to live music this year's event will feature a craft show featuring pottery, jewellery, fine art and gourmet food. Visitors are invited to explore the park and enjoy the music. 'We encourage everyone to BYOB,' said Addison. 'Bring your own blanket or chair because we are going to be in the grass in the centre of the park.' Since 1974, the festival has been a beloved fixture of London's cultural identity, celebrating Canadian music, art and craft in the heart of the city. 'We have all sorts of new and exciting ideas and we are looking for feedback from our visitors for future years,' said Donaldson. The festival kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

This week, the superstar singer/songwriter will play a trio of back-to-back shows July 25, 26 and 28 at the Orpheum Theatre on his A Quiet Celebration Tour. Simon had planned to retire from music altogether after his 2018 goodbye shows, but then returned to recording and touring with the release of the Grammy-nominated 2023 album, Seven Pslams. When the 83-year-old finally strums off into the sunset, it will mark the end of a career that first saw him enter the Billboard 100 charts in 1961 when the single Motorcycle by Tico and the Triumphs hit number 99. Without question, he is an American musical icon with a legacy to rival the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley. Beginning with the duo Simon & Garfunkel, the platinum-selling albums just kept coming. After a widely reported acrimonious break up, Simon's solo career took off with his 1972 self-titled Paul Simon. Since then, he has consistently created iconic albums, from Still Crazy After All These Years to Graceland and Stranger to Stranger. He is a rare double-inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with 16 Grammy Awards to his credit. That legacy is one that the artist is constantly reassessing, as he told Vancouver Sun writer Neil McCormick in a September 2018 interview that ran with the headline 'But is it really over?' 'There's no time to get sentimental,' said Simon. 'I've trained myself to be focused on the performance, as opposed to saying 'Wow, look at all the people and the sun going down and this is the end.' When the sound is good and my voice is good, I give myself the pleasure of just singing, but if I allow myself to get distracted, I'm not doing my job. You don't want to forget your lyrics in front of 65,000 people.' There are no reports of Simon forgetting a line live on this current tour, which began in New Orleans on April 4 and will conclude in Seattle on Aug. 5-6 at McCaw Hall. He has had to cancel dates on the tour due to medical reasons, including two June concerts in Philadelphia, where severe back pain required a minor medical procedure to remedy. In The Guardian's review of opening night of the tour, writer Ramon Antonio Vargas noted the artist still brings his all to performing and his 19-song show, which included career gems such as the Boxer, found the audience 'collectively belting out the song's concluding 'lie-la-lie' refrain and a round of cheers that ultimately rivalled the closing standing ovation later.' Backed by a band including Caleb Burhans, Jamey Haddad, Gyan Riley, Mick Rossi, Andy Snitzer, Nancy Stagnitta, Mark Stewart, Eugene Friesen, Steve Gadd, Soundgarden drummer Matt Chamberlain and Simon's wife Edie Brickell , the concert is divided into two halves that include performing the entirety of Seven Psalms. The set list has been mixing mega hits with deep cuts from across the artist's career, every last one of which appears to receive a uniquely new arrangement reflecting the artist's always-imaginative creative impulses. Photo by Mark van Manen / PNG When he toured with Sting on 2014's On Stage Together, I was floored by all the nuanced and new directions he took tunes so familiar to fans that they could probably recall every note perfectly. 'All you have to do to appreciate Simon's genius is listen to him change his phrasing on Mother and Child Reunion, to completely change the emotion of the lyric, or funk out 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover with a New Orleans second line brass band riff,' The Vancouver Sun review noted. 'And a song as new as Dazzling Blue from 2011's So Beautiful or So What proves he still has the songwriting chops. Plus, a voice that is still awesome.' Only two years later, before his first announced retirement, Simon played a sold-out show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in 2016. In a Vancouver Sun review, it was noted 'the 24-song set that never flagged, frequently amused and the man can still sing. Like really belt it out. Paul Simon, still vital after all these years.' Arrested Development added to Thursday folk festival lineup
The 2024 Calgary Folk Festival kicks off Thursday night on Prince's Island Park. (Photo: X@calgaryfolkfest) The Calgary Folk Festival has announced a lineup change. Hip hop group Arrested Development has been added to Thursday night's lineup. The lineup change came down Tuesday after the scheduled act, Michael Kiwanuka, had to cancel his upcoming performance Thursday due to illness. Arrested Development will now play the ATB Stage before headliner Sierra Ferrell. The group won two Grammy Awards in 1993, for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Rap Group. This will be the group's third time performing at the Calgary Folk Festival, previously playing in 2009 and 2015. Folkfest kicks off Thursday and goes until Sunday, with tickets still available online.
