Former winner Shaun Micheel encounters snake during US PGA Championship
Micheel was happy to give the snake – believed to be a non-venomous eastern kingsnake – a wide berth before a tournament volunteer stepped in and used his foot to help usher the reptile out of the way and into the rough.

After hitting his third shot to 12 feet, Micheel converted the birdie putt and also picked up another shot on the 11th as he battled to make the halfway cut in the US PGA for the first time since 2011.
The 56-year-old won his sole major title at Oak Hill in 2003, beating Chad Campbell by two shots after a birdie on the 72nd hole.
He also finished second in the same event at Medinah in 2006, five shots behind Tiger Woods.

Duval believes Scheffler playing golf not seen since Woods
The 29-year-old was majestic two weeks ago, weathering all that Royal Portrush had to throw at him on his way to a classy four-shot victory and first Open Championship title. The win was Scheffler's fourth major of his career, after wins at both the 2022 and 2024 Masters and this year's PGA Championship in June. It also saw the 2024 Olympic champion become the first reigning world number one to lift the Claret Jug since 15-time major winner Woods in 2006. But while former world number one and Open champion Duval – who won by three shots at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2001 - stopped short of comparing Scheffler to Woods, he did admit the former is going into events as strong a favourite as the latter was during his pomp. 'Anybody who wins an Open, or any of those types of events, you have to be in command of your mental facilities, your physical facilities and emotional [facilities], but [Scheffler] just seems to have all that. It's second nature to him right now and that hasn't really happened since Tiger,' said Duval, speaking at the launch of Ernie Els' new golf club, Els Club Vilamoura. And that's kind of how it was with Tiger. 'Obviously, you'd always take the field in a bet, but that's the level he's playing at, and it's impressive.' Such is the grip Scheffer has on golf right now, conversations about himself and Woods were always likely to take place. Ominously, both men took 1197 days to win their fourth major from the date of their first triumph, while they are two of only four players – the others being Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player – to win the Masters, The Open and PGA Championship before the age of 30. By converting his four-shot lead after 54 holes into a victory by the same margin on the Antrim coast, Scheffler has now won all four of his majors having led after 54-holes, a trait Woods was famously known for too, winning 14 of his 15 majors when either leading or in a tie for the lead after the third round. And according to Duval, the 17-time PGA Tour winner is on course to re-write the record books should he continue in his current vein of form and already sits among the greatest to have played the sport. He continued: 'He is one of the greats, without question. 'His ability to control the ball and how he hits it, and if you look at it, he's almost perfectly pin high so much, the game gets easy then. And he certainly is making it look easy. 'He's a remarkable talent, and it'll be interesting to see what happens over the course of the next five, seven, ten years with him. That'll put him into his mid to upper 30s, and in that time, you could be talking about some historical records [that he's broken or set].' Duval played a nine-hole exhibition to open the Els Club Vilamoura alongside four-time major winner Els and Scottish legend Colin Montgomerie. The Algarve course is a championship-standard 18-hole golf course that features a luxury clubhouse and signature amenities such as the 261 Bar, and was built on the redesigned Victoria course, which hosted the Portugal Masters from 2007 to 2022. It will host the new PGA Champions Tour event, the Portugal Invitational, after signing a five-year deal. The first edition of the event is set to be held between 31 July to 2 August 2026. Els said: 'Golf is in the pretty sweet spot at the moment and [creating this course] has been a really nice venture. We want the conditions to be absolutely perfect and for people to have a great experience and good food.' Montgomerie added: 'The golf course is superb, and the clubhouse is fantastic. It's not just a course for the present; it's a course for the future as well.' PGA TOUR Champions announces the Portugal Invitational to be held at The Els Club Vilamoura on course designed by Ernie Els. Iona Stephen has recalled an incredibly awkward moment from a live TV interview with Dustin Johnson which left her cringing immediately after she accidentally misnamed the former world No. 1 Sky Sports pundit Iona Stephen hoped the ground beneath her would swallow her up after misnaming Dustin Johnson in a live TV interview. The 41-year-old, who at the time was on the verge of claiming the world No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, had just won the inaugural Saudi International tournament at the Al Murooj Golf Course. The competition was the first European Tour event to be played in Saudi Arabia, as well as one of the first to be co-sanctioned between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. Stephen was under pressure to get the name of the event into her interview with Johnson as he ran out winner with a total score of 19-under-par for the weekend. However, the stress of making sure she called it the 'Saudi International' rather than the 'Saudi Invitational,' which she had in her head, led to her fumbling Johnson's name instead. Recalling the incident during a chat with Peter Finch on his Rough Cut Golf Podcast, Stephen said: "I called the world No. 1 Dustin Johnson, Justin Dohnson, live in a winner's interview." When Finch teased if it was a big event, Stephen added: "It was a huge event, yeah. At the time it was one of the first co-sanctioned events in the world. It was when the DP World Tour first co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour, and it was called the Saudi International. "And I had been told I needed to say the name of the tournament, the Saudi International, in the winner's interview; like, 'Congratulations, you've won the Saudi International...' But all I kept wanting to call it was the Saudi Invitational, and I couldn't get this out my head. "So I was going, 'Saudi Invitational, Saudi Invitational, Saudi International, Saudi International, Saudi International...' Then they went, 'Cue Iona live,' and I went, 'Justin Dohnson, congratulations!' "And he looked at me, I looked at him. I wanted the ground to eat me up, it was awful, the whole thing. PTSD from that for many years." Stephen has been a popular member of the Sky Sports Golf team since 2020, having previously played the game to a professional standard. Most recently she was on hand at Royal Portrush for The Open Championship, which was won by none other than Scottie Scheffler. Johnson also featured in the event, finishing T23 on six under-par. He has won 24 events in total with the PGA Tour and another nine on the European Tour before he joined the controversial LIV Golf breakaway league in 2022. As captain of the 4Aces team, Johnson plays alongside team-mates Thomas Pieters, Harold Varner III and Patrick Reed. He has enjoyed plenty of success since making the move across to LIV, winning one event each year. He is also the second-highest earner on the roster at present, with £44,417,051 to his name in winnings, including a £13million payday for being crowned 2022's Individual Champion. The only man to have earned more than Johnson with LIV is Talor Gooch, who has racked up a staggering £49m. However, Johnson isn't the only big name in the golfing world who jumped ship from the PGA Tour to play under the LIV banner after the league's inception of 2021. The likes of Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson all remain part of LIV, competing week in, week out for incredible individual and team cash prizes. Just three events remain on the circuit this season, with LIV Golf Chicago landing at Bolingbrook Golf Club, LIV Golf Indianapolis at Chatham Hills and the LIV Golf Team Championship in Michigan all taking place in August.

Donald Trump tees off at his new Scottish golf course
Donald Trump celebrated the opening of his new golf course in Scotland with a star-studded guest list that included former Premier League footballers and a Ryder Cup captain. The US president cut the ribbon on the new course at his Menie resort in Aberdeenshire on the final day of his visit to Scotland. Mr Trump then teed off at the first hole and played a quick round, before returning to Washington to 'put out fires all over the world'. He was accompanied in a four-ball round by son Eric, who oversaw the construction of the new course, Paul McGinley, the former Europe Ryder Cup captain, and Rich Beem, a previous PGA Championship winner. Among the other celebrities who attended the opening and played a round were Gianfranco Zola, the former Chelsea footballer, and Robbie Fowler, the ex-Liverpool striker. Andriy Shevchenko, the former Ukrainian striker, and Jim Leighton, the ex-Manchester United and Scotland goalkeeper were also present. Political figures attending included John Swinney, the Scottish First Minister, and Anas Sarwar. The Scottish Labour leader, an avid football fan, appeared starstruck talking to Zola. Zola and Shevchenko played their four-ball match alongside Warren Stephens, the US Ambassador to the UK, and Stephen Gallacher, the professional golfer. Mr Trump led a pipe band to the first tee, where a grandstand had been erected for dignitaries to observe the opening ceremony, and was an ebullient mood, even praising the assembled media. 'The media has been terrific, believe it or not. I didn't use the word fake news one time, not one time. Today they're not fake news, they're wonderful news,' the president said. He also paid tribute to his granddaughter Chloe's golf skills and she and her brother Tristan appeared to be delighted to be travelling in a golf cart driven by their father, the President's son, Donald Jr. The president built the first course on the site after Alex Salmond's SNP government controversially allowed him to build the development on an unspoiled stretch of sand dunes. The planning application was called in and approved by John Swinney, who was then the Scottish Finance Secretary and is now First Minister. He also attended the opening, after holding a private 15-minute meeting with Mr Trump. The US president asked him to stand up and described him as a 'special guy.' The course opened in 2012 and two years ago, the president and Eric Trump announced plans for a second course. With a typically Trumpian aversion to understatement, they said the two courses together formed 'The Greatest 36 Holes in Golf.' The US president's speech at the ceremony veered between lauding the new course and addressing world events He said: 'We started with a beautiful piece of land, but we made it much more beautiful. The area has really welcomed us. If you remember at the beginning there wasn't quite a welcome, but it wasn't bad. 'But with time they liked us more and more, now they love us and we love them.' Mr Trump added: 'I look forward to playing it today. We'll play it very quickly and then I go back to DC and we put out fires all over the world. 'We did one yesterday – you know we stopped the war. We've stopped about five wars. That's much more important than playing golf. As much as I like it, it's much more important.' Thanking his son Eric, who is executive vice president of the Trump Organization and oversees both his Menie and Turnberry golf resorts in Scotland, the president said: 'This has been an unbelievable development. 'The land, they said it couldn't get zoned, it was an impossibility. And Sean Connery said 'let the bloody bloke build his golf course'. Once he said that everything came into line. John (Swinney) and I were talking about that last night.' After Mr Trump hit an arrow-straight drive down the fairway, he received a round of applause and his son Eric quipped: 'He likes the course.' However, there was no total escape from the day job and a reporter shouted from the grandstand, asking what he planned to say next to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister. 'We're working together to try and get things straightened out,' Mr Trump said, before clambering into one of a wagon train of golf carts transporting the players.
