Deadline looms for MultCo budget approval
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Time is running out on budget talks for the Multnomah County Board, with the adoption vote looming on Thursday. Multnomah County Commissioner Shannon Singleton said the board is still considering around 30 amendments to the Chair's original proposed budget. 'We have the same sort of revenue that we're using to fund programs that we want to fund from different commission offices, and so it's working through, with each other because we can't double spend money,' Singleton said. 'Who is going to kind of let go of something or if they can find another funding source for that.' Some amendments are new programs, and others are restorations. But she said if some pass, there could be around $20 million in changes from the original proposed budget. 'Plus we had some new revenue amendments that were added to the process,' Singleton said, 'And so there are some additional funds that we're able to spend so that somewhere we don't have to make reductions in the chair's proposed budget.' Cuts are still a top concern for Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez. Vasquez has said proposed cuts to his budget would mean layoffs in the DA's office. In a statement to KOIN 6 Vasquez said, 'I have been loud about the need to fully fund the DA's office because the people of Multnomah County want and deserve a safer community. I do too. And that takes a fully funded DA's Office. We are hoping for the best and watching closely to see what happens tomorrow with the budget vote.' 'The reductions that the DA faced are comparable to what other departments have faced in a reduction year,' Singleton said. 'It's really important that we're thoughtful about where those come and we don't just cut from the front line direct services.' Another department staring down serious cuts — county health. Among those cuts is the entire Nurse-Family Partnership program. Singleton said everyone is facing an economic downturn. 'Not just the county, but the human beings living here as well,' she said. 'And so it's really important to me that we come out with a balanced budget. And I don't mean balanced in the number, but balanced in where those reductions have been. And unfortunately, some really good programs are going to be a part of the reduction.'

DA withdraws from National Dialogue - but stays put in GNU
The DA has withdrawn from participating in the upcoming National Dialogue over the axing of former deputy minister Andrew Whitfield and what it described as 'serious disrespect'. DA leader John Steenhuisen announced this during a press briefing on Saturday. The National Dialogue will see civic society and South Africans come together to find solutions to South Africa's crises, from unemployment to gender-based violence and other social ills. The DA's Federal Executive met to decide on the way forward after issuing an ultimatum on Friday. Steenhuisen said leaving the government of national unity (GNU) and collapsing the government would not be in the best interest of South Africa. Political developments surrounding the GNU prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to cancel his trip to Spain and delegate Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola to attend. Whitfield was fired this week for travelling to the US without Ramaphosa's approval. The axing led to a standoff between the two biggest parties in the GNU. On Thursday, the DA gave Ramaphosa two days to dismiss several ANC ministers whom the party said were implicated in corruption.

These are the Pacific Northwest wines that won big at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards results have now been released, and Oregon's very own Domaine Serene has won a platinum recognition for their 'Yamhill Cuvée' Pinot Noir, with several other PNW wineries bringing home gold awards. Now in its 22nd year, Decanter's Wine Awards competition is known as one of the largest and most significant wine competitions in the world. Last year, Audeant Wines was the only winery in Oregon to receive a platinum award for its 'Luminous Hills' Pinot Noir. Doubleback and Bledsoe Family Winery of Washington received gold awards. Domaine Serene performed well at the Decanter Awards last year, winning four gold, eleven silver, and three bronze awards. This year, though, their Yamhill Cuvée was the only Oregon wine to win platinum. Wine Wednesday: Queer Wine Fest returns to Dayton 'We are honored that our 2022 Yamhill Cuvée Pinot Noir has received a Platinum Medal at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards,' Domaine Serene said. 'This recognition from one of the most respected global wine competitions underscores Domaine Serene's commitment to crafting wines of elegance, quality, and consistency, all while embodying a distinct sense of place.' Yamhill Cuvée is a 2022 pinot noir made from vineyards across the Willamette Valley. According to the winery, 'this wine showcases plush, fruit-forward character with notes of kirsch cherry, baking spices, and rose petal.' Echolands Winery was the only Washington winery to win a platinum award with their 'Blue Mountain Vineyard' Cabernet Franc. According to their website, the wine has a 'character of lavender, rose petal, herbs and blue and red fruits, along with the generosity and richness that Walla Walla can bring.'
