Jet2 blasted after Grans put on flight to wrong Spanish island

Daily Recorda day ago
The pair were stunned when the pilot announced they'd be touching down in a different place.
Two elderly woman have slammed holiday giant Jet2 after a shocking airport mix-up saw them put on the wrong plane — and only realised it mid-air when the captain said they were landing in the wrong place.

Linda Trestrail, 69, and Wendy Russell, 71, thought they were flying off to sunny Majorca for a relaxing break. But after five separate ticket checks — including one onboard — the pair were stunned when the pilot announced they'd be touching down in Menorca instead.

The pensioners, who both suffer from mobility issues and had booked special assistance, branded it a 'catalogue of disasters' and accused Jet2 of treating them worse than luggage, reports the Mirror.

Linda fumed: 'You get compensation if your bags go missing — but they lost us, not the bl**dy baggage!'
The pals, who both use wheelchairs, were given help through security at Bristol Airport, shown to the gate, and even directed into their seats by cabin crew before the horror realisation mid-flight.
'I burst into tears,' said Linda. 'I turned to Wendy and said, 'He said Menorca — not Majorca!' The flight attendant laughed when I told her. That's when the chaos started.'
The blunder was so severe even the captain admitted he'd never seen anything like it in his career. But despite offering to personally fly them to Majorca, Linda claims Jet2 bosses overruled it 'due to security.'
Wendy, who has undergone three brain surgeries and suffers from arthritis, said: 'It's terrifying how easy it was. They bang on about airport security, but two strangers got on a plane with five checks and no one noticed!'

To make things worse, their luggage made it to Majorca without them — a major security breach that could've had dangerous consequences. 'Our bags flew without us. That's terrifying,' Wendy added.
The women ended up stranded in Menorca for hours before being put on another flight. By the time they arrived at their resort, they'd been travelling for 17 hours instead of five.
Linda said: 'Our legs were like balloons. We were supposed to be relaxing — we just collapsed in the room.'

But their ordeal didn't end there. A Jet2 rep at the hotel refused to meet them, and when they finally got a call from the airline two days later, they were offered a 'free excursion' — despite both being physically unable to walk.
'I thought it was a joke,' Linda said. 'We couldn't even get out of bed, let alone go sightseeing!'

Despite being the talk of their resort — with fellow holidaymakers recognising them as 'the ladies who got on the wrong flight' — the pair said their break was 'ruined.'
They've still not received compensation from Jet2, despite their travel agent and family contacting the company multiple times. So far, only Bristol Airport has issued an apology.

Wendy added: 'This could've been so much worse. It was traumatic for us — but what if it had been someone with a serious health issue, or worse? This must never happen again.'
Jet2 has since apologised, blaming the blunder on a 'human error' by a third-party special assistance provider. The airline claims to have 'retrained staff' and offered the women a gesture of goodwill.
They said: "We would like to offer our sincere apologies to Mses. Trestrail and Russell for this incident. This is an extremely isolated incident and although there was no security risk, we have of course investigated it as a matter of urgency, including with the third-party special assistance provider. We can confirm that the customers went through security correctly, and their luggage was also screened correctly.

"However, after these checks the customers were taken to the incorrect aircraft, which is the responsibility of the third-party special assistance provider at the airport. Upon boarding the aircraft, the incorrect destination on their boarding passes was unfortunately not identified and we apologise for this oversight which was down to human error.
"We have carried out additional training with the team to ensure this does not happen again. As soon as we learned of the issue, our team booked Mses. Trestrail and Russell onto the soonest available flight from Menorca to Majorca and they also provided all the assistance they could both throughout their journey and the rest of their holiday.
"We have been in touch with Mses. Trestrail and Russell to offer an appropriate gesture of goodwill and once again offer our sincere apologies. We understand they are due to travel with us once again this year, and we look forward to welcoming them onboard and delivering the usual VIP customer experience that we are recognised for."
But for Linda and Wendy, the trust is broken.
Linda said: 'We were terrified flying home. You're supposed to feel safe in their hands. They lost people, not just bags. That says it all.'

Storm Floris upgraded to amber warning as 90mph wind gusts to batter Scotland

Storm Floris, the sixth named storm of the year, is set to hammer huge swathes of the UK in the coming days A severe weather warning for Storm Floris - the UK's first named storm since Storm Éowyn wreaked havoc in late January - has been upgraded to amber amid forecasts of gusts likely to reach up to 90mph in Scotland. ‌ The Met Office raised the warning level from yellow to amber on Sunday morning (August 3) for most of Scotland, from the Central Belt stretching all the way up to the Highlands. ‌ The enhanced warning will be in force for 12 hours from 10am to 10pm on Monday, August 4. The existing yellow warning, covering the rest of Scotland, remains in place from 6am to midnight on Monday. ‌ The national weather agency has issued a "danger to life" warning ahead of this new weather front. The forecaster is urging people to stay indoors where possible as flying debris could cause injury and "danger to life". A Met Office spokesperson said: "Storm Floris will bring a spell of unusually strong west or winds to much of Scotland during Monday. ‌ "Gusts of 50 to 70 mph are expected for many parts, and are likely to reach 80 to 90 mph on some exposed coasts, hills and bridges. "Western coastal areas will see the highest gusts between late morning and early afternoon, the strongest winds then transferring to north eastern Scotland by late afternoon/early evening." The amber warning area covers the whole of Scotland from south of the Central Belt, along with Arran, Kintyre, Islay, and Orkney and Shetland. The winds could pick up to a whopping 85mph. The alert also covers Northern Ireland and northern areas in both England and Wales. Scots should expect the strong winds to cause some damage to buildings, potential power cuts that could affect services such as mobile networks, as well as large waves along sea fronts and coastal areas. ‌ Some roads and bridges could also be potentially closed, as well as longer travel times and possible cancellations on train, bus, plane and ferry services. The national weather agency said that in the yellow warning area, many inland areas were likely to see gusts of 40 to 50 mph, with 60 to 70 mph possible along exposed coasts and high ground. The Met Office said driving in such conditions could be dangerous and urged motorists slowing down, be aware of high-sided vehicles and caravans on more exposed roads and be cautious when overtaking. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! It also advised drivers to give cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries, and buses more room than usual. The Met Office said people should stay indoors as much as possible, and not walk or shelter close to buildings and trees. ‌ It also called on people to secure in advance for any loose items outside homes such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds and fences. Dormant Russian volcano erupts for first time in 600 years after 8.8 earthquake

Krasheninnikov Volcano has erupted just days after a massive 8.8 earthquake rocked the region and triggered tsunami waves across the Pacific. A volcano in Russia's Far East has erupted for the first time in six centuries, sending a towering ash cloud nearly six miles into the sky. ‌ The Krasheninnikov Volcano, located in the remote Kamchatka Peninsula, began spewing lava overnight—its first confirmed eruption since 1463, according to Russian authorities. ‌ Dramatic images show plumes of smoke and ash rising from the crater and drifting towards the Pacific Ocean. An orange aviation warning has been issued due to the size and reach of the ash cloud, reports the Mirror. ‌ The unexpected eruption comes just days after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Far East coast on Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves, flooding a fishing port, and leaving several people injured. The quake also set off Klyuchevskoy, the region's most active volcano. According to officials, tsunami waves reached heights of 10 to 13 feet in Kamchatka, while smaller waves were recorded as far away as Japan's Hokkaido island (2ft) and the US west coast (up to 5ft in San Francisco). The quake's epicentre was roughly 120 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 180,000 residents. Many fled buildings in panic as tsunami warnings were issued across the Pacific, including for California, Oregon, Washington state, and British Columbia. Though no fatalities were reported, multiple injuries were confirmed in Russia, and power outages affected parts of the region. ‌ Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team, confirmed the historic eruption of Krasheninnikov in a statement to Russia's state news agency RIA. 'This is the first historically confirmed eruption of Krasheninnikov Volcano in 600 years,' she said, noting that lava was last documented from the volcano in 1463. ‌ The region is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity. Russia's Kuril Islands, which stretch between Kamchatka and Japan, are dotted with active volcanoes and have seen frequent tremors. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! On Sunday, a 6.8 magnitude aftershock struck off the Kamchatka coast. While not as intense as Wednesday's quake, authorities have urged residents to avoid coastal areas as a precaution against further tsunami waves. The 8.8 quake was the most powerful recorded globally since Japan's catastrophic 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which claimed nearly 20,000 lives. Though Wednesday's disaster spared lives, experts warn that aftershocks and volcanic activity could continue in the coming days.

Antler's sale axes 'biggest carry-on' cabin bags for Jet2 and Ryanair flyers by £75

Antler has just launched a major summer sale that's slashed the price of this Ryanair, EasyJet and Jet2-approved cabin case, saving shoppers a whopping £75 Antler, the renowned high-end luggage label, is all set for the rest of the travel season, as top items from its latest Icon Collection land on the retailer's massive summer sale. Boasting an impressive 110 years of excellence, the iconic British brand described last summer's Icon collection as "the perfect combination of style and practicality." This range is crafted to suit every kind of trip, whether it's a luxurious long-haul or a swift city break. It includes three distinctive styles: the Icon Stripe Suitcase, Soft Stripe Suitcase, and Discovery Backpack. The Icon Stripe Suitcase, in particular, is causing quite a stir among Antler enthusiasts as it's touted as the "biggest cabin bag" that still meets the size requirements of popular airlines Ryanair, EasyJet, and Jet2. What's more, the Icon Stripe cabin case is currently up for grabs with a major discount. The Icon Stripe Cabin Bag is quite roomy, measuring 39.5 x 58 x 24 cm and weighing a mere 2.8kg. This ensures it fits snugly in the overhead compartments of several budget airlines, helping jet-setters dodge those pesky extra luggage fees at the airport while providing ample space for all their essentials on their next weekend break. For those who often need more packing space when prepping for a trip, the Icon Stripe's generous 55L main compartment will be a godsend. The well-equipped interior features a lining, dual-zip pockets, and compression straps to keep belongings secure. Crafted from top-quality recycled polycarbonate, the Icon Stripe is incredibly sturdy and can handle any airport mishaps or bumping around in the luggage compartment. Plus, it's waterproof, so there's no need to worry about water damage inside the airport or as you make the trip from the airport to your hotel. Not only is it resilient, but this case also glides effortlessly around the airport thanks to its Silent Glide 360 spinner wheels, so you can wave goodbye to the grating sound of rattling wheels or the uncomfortable rocking of uneven wheels as you traverse to your gate. The handle also boasts a bespoke comfort grip. Now reduced to £111, this cabin case comes in a wide range of colours—with alternative-size models available if you'd like to secure the whole set or something bigger to meet your needs—but it's worth noting that the Dune Yellow hue is currently boasting the massive £75 discount. This cabin bag has amassed a majorly impressive 4.9 out of 5-star rating from thrilled Antler shoppers. One buyer beams: "Great purchase. Light and the wheels are amazing. Glides on its own." Further accolades come from this shopper who shares: "A perfect suitcase - you know you're getting old when you ask for a new suitcase for your birthday but I am delighted and now want the bigger one!" A third shares the same sentiments, gushing: "Literally cannot fault this bag in any way. Obviously it's small, but it fits the dimensions for Ryanair flights perfectly too. 10/10." And a fourth chimes in: "Having to use a carry on for the first time ever I was really pleased with the space inside. It has been well thought out with three useful pockets. I got far more in than I thought I would be able to and even have space left over to pop in some gifts for people when I return. Gorgeous colour and so easy to set the lock code. Looking forward to using it shortly for my trip." Though one customer leaves a slightly disheartened 4-star review, noting: "The colour was a little dingier than the sunshine pale lemon I was expecting," that said, they do go on to say this: " but I cannot fault the build and quality. Looking forward to airing her out very shortly!" If you'd rather shop elsewhere and don't mind splashing some cash, check out Kapten & Son's Heathrow Essential Cabin Case for £189.90. Or, if you're keeping to a smaller budget, take a peek at this AVIO Underseat Cabin Bag perfect for easyJet and Wizz Air customers without paying extra for luggage, that's up for grabs on Amazon for £22.60. For something offering a little more personality, Nere's vibrant gelato-inspired cabin range is surely one to bring a smile to shoppers. This is the brand's lightest hard suitcase, engineered with a scratch-resistant PP hard shell for stress-free travel, and it sells for £59.40.
