ATP roundup: Ben Shelton cruises into D.C. quarterfinals
No. 4 seed Ben Shelton needed just 61 minutes to defeat Canadian No. 15 Gabriel Diallo 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 16 at the Mubadala Citi D.C. Open on Thursday in Washington.
Shelton smashed 16 aces and won an impressive 28 of 30 first-service points (93.3 percent) to make the match an open-and-shut case.
There were no upsets in the early part of the day, as No. 8 Daniil Medvedev of Russia breezed past Chinese qualifier Yibing Wu 6-3, 6-2, and No. 12 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain and No. 14 Brandon Nakashima also won in straight sets. French lucky loser Corentin Moutet did stay alive in the draw by beating British wild card Daniel Evans 6-2, 7-6 (4).
No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur of Australia pulled out a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 6-4 win over Czech 11th seed Jiri Lehecka, who saved two match points in the second-set tiebreaker to extend the match.
The two evening matches pit home-crowd favorite and sixth seed Frances Tiafoe against Italian ninth seed Flavio Cobolli, and No. 1 seed Taylor Fritz against Italy's Matteo Arnaldi.
Generali Open
No. 1 seed Alexander Bublik won an all-Kazakh battle against Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 6-2 in 75 minutes to advance to the semifinals in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Bublik saved all five break points he faced and won a whopping 25 of 26 first-service points (96.2 percent). His next opponent will be Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, who was a 7-6 (2), 6-2 winner over Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild.
French No. 6 seed Arthur Rinderknech outlasted German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and his semifinal foe will be countryman Arthur Cazaux, who beat German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-4.
Plava Laguna Croatia Open
No. 2 seed Luciano Darderi of Italy rallied from a poor opening set to defeat Croatian home favorite Dino Prizmic 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarters in Umag, Croatia.
Darderi hit four aces in the decisive third set and is lined up to face No. 3 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina, who led Pablo Llamas Ruiz 6-4, 5-2 when the Spanish qualifier retired.
No. 4 Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina charged past French qualifier Titouan Droguet 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, and Spaniard Carlos Taberner took down Jesper de Jong of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-3.

Yankees release RHP Marcus Stroman among post-deadline moves
(Photo credit: John Jones-Imagn Images) After more than a year and a half of struggles, veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman was released by the New York Yankees on Friday as they revamped their roster following Thursday's trade deadline. Stroman, 34, was 3-2 with a 6.23 ERA in nine starts this season, while spending 2 1/2 months on the injured list with a left knee injury. New York is set to have right-hander Luis Gil make his season debut Sunday after he missed four months with a lat injury. The Yankees also optioned right-handers Yerry De los Santos and Ian Hamilton to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Before the trade deadline came to a conclusion Thursday, the Yankees revamped their bullpen by adding right-handers David Bednar (Pittsburgh Pirates), Camilo Doval (San Francisco Giants) and Jake Bird (Colorado Rockies). They also added infielder/outfielder Jose Caballero from the Tampa Bay Rays. All four were activated to the roster. Since joining the Yankees last season, Stroman went 13-11 with a 4.69 ERA in 39 appearances (38 starts). In 11 major league seasons with four clubs, including his first six with the Toronto Blue Jays, the two-time All-Star was 90-87 with a 3.79 ERA in 270 appearances (261 starts). De Los Santos, 27, had a 1.78 ERA in 17 relief appearances with the Yankees this season, while Hamilton, 30, was 2-1 with a 4.28 ERA in 36 appearances (one start). Bednar, 30, has 101 saves with the Pirates since 2021 and was 2-5 with a 2.37 ERA and 17 saves this season. Doval, 28, hads 107 saves in five seasons with the Giants and was 4-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 15 saves this season. Bird, 29, was 4-1 with a 4.73 ERA in 45 relief appearances with Colorado. Caballero, 28, was batting .226 with an American League-best 34 stolen bases for the Rays. He was tied for the MLB lead in steals with the Pirates' Oneil Cruz heading into Friday's games.

Saskatchewan Roughriders visit Montreal Alouettes in clash of CFL heavyweights
MONTREAL – The top two teams in the CFL standings don't have a lot in common — except for the fact they just keep finding ways to win. The 6-1 Saskatchewan Roughriders will visit the 5-2 Montreal Alouettes on Saturday in a clash between two teams riding win streaks and finding success in very different ways. As such, it should come as no surprise that there was plenty of high praise to go around from either side leading up to the matchup. 'They're physical up front, for sure,' said Alouettes head coach Jason Maas. 'I think they tackle extremely well in the secondary as well. I think they are a physical group, and they play with a lot of confidence. They fly around. You've got to really protect the ball against them, but I think it starts up front for them.' 'They're well-coached, obviously,' countered Roughriders head coach Corey Mace. 'They try to take away things that teams are really good at. They're fast as ever, they're relentless to the football. 'They do a good job causing turnovers and causing confusion. They've got enough guys in the back end that can cover a lot of ground as well. They do a good job.' Both teams come in on two-game winning streaks. Montreal pulled off comeback wins over Toronto and Calgary, despite holding the lead for just 6:38 across both games combined. Saskatchewan, meanwhile, bounced back from its only loss of the season — a 33-31 setback against Calgary on July 12 — with narrow wins over B.C. and Edmonton. Five of the Riders' six victories have come by seven points or fewer. Saskatchewan will be without standout receiver Samuel Emilus on Saturday. The Montreal native was placed on the six-game injured list after suffering a knee injury late in last week's win over the Elks. He will be replaced by 26-year-old Canadian slotback Tommy Nield, who is making his first start of the season after missing the first six games with an ankle injury. Montreal will once again turn to veteran quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson on Saturday in the absence of starting pivot Davis Alexander. The 37-year-old picked up his first win in three starts with Montreal last week, completing 30 of 40 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown in his team's 23-21 win over the Stampeders. 'My confidence gets better with each rep,' said Bethel-Thompson. 'It's just about doing the little things right. With each rep, I feel more comfortable, and hopefully that shows Saturday night.' Meanwhile, the Alouettes' defence, which has surrendered the fewest yards per game (321.4) and second-fewest points (158) across the league this season, will welcome back a familiar face in defensive end Shawn Lemon on Saturday. Lemon played parts of the last two seasons with Montreal, helping the team to a Grey Cup championship in 2023. The 36-year-old was suspended indefinitely in April 2024 for gambling on league games while with Calgary in 2021, including one game in which he played. Lemon also served a two-game suspension after testing positive for the banned stimulant phentermine, an appetite suppressant. After being reinstated last month, the veteran signed a contract with the Alouettes through the remainder of the 2025 season. Matt Turner joins Revolution on loan from Lyon as he looks to get back to national team form
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matt Turner is returning to his MLS roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as U.S. national team's goalkeeper. Turner will join the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Lyon through June 2026, the Revolution announced Friday. The deal includes an option to purchase the contract of Turner, who will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026.
