The bodies of Shaunna Jernigan, 35, and her 14-year-old son, Timothy Jernigan, were recovered after a drowning incident at Bertie Beach in North Carolina on July 9, according to a statement from the Bertie County Sheriff's Office (BCSO). Officials responded to a report of someone drowning at 5:41 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, first responders discovered that the mother-and-son pair were drowning, the statement said. Shaunna's 11-year-old daughter was rescued from the water during the incident. The victims were about 150 yards from the shore. "Life-saving measures were done on the mother and son, but unfortunately, they didn't survive," officials said. The 11-year-old girl claimed in an initial statement to officers that she and her mother were floating on an inflatable while her brother was swimming. She said Timothy "could no longer feel the bottom of the beach and became distressed." Shaunna then entered the water to rescue her teenage son and "also became distressed," the girl added. "Our community mourns with the family and friends of the victims," the sheriff's office said. "The family, friends, our community and first responders need your prayers during this difficult time. Resources have been made available to the family and first responders." Shaunna was described as "a devoted mother, compassionate friend and cherished member of her community" in her obituary. "Shaunna's tragic demise came during an act of profound heroism, as she attempted to save her beloved son, Lil Tim, from drowning. They are now reunited in eternal peace," the obituary read. Shaunna, who worked as a first responder with Bertie County EMS, is survived by two children, her husband, and her mother and sister. Timothy, nicknamed Lil Tim, was an incoming freshman at Bertie High School, according to his obituary. Two arrested after fight involving suspect's ex-husband in Baxter County

BAXTER COUNTY, Ark. — Deputies arrested two people who were allegedly involved in a fight involving a suspect's ex-husband and another woman staying at a residence in Baxter County early Monday morning. Hayley Davis, 29, of rural Mountain Home, is charged with felony residential burglary and aggravated assault, as well as misdemeanor third-degree battery. Andrew Harkreader, 36, of Salesville, is charged with misdemeanor third-degree battery. According to the Baxter County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), they arrived at a residence on Norfork River Road after 3 a.m. and contacted a man and a woman. They told deputies the ex-wife of the man, identified as 29-year-old Hayley Davis of Rural Mountain Home, came to the residence upset that the woman was staying there. The victims said Davis got out of her vehicle with a tire iron and began swinging it at the male. The male victim fled back into the home, but Davis kicked down the front door. Davis then broke into a bathroom where the female was hiding, punching her in the head and pulling her hair. Harkreader also came into the home and restrained the male victim so he wouldn't be able to stop Davis, BCSO says. Arkansas State Police make multiple arrests, rescue multiple victims as part of national child exploitation investigation Both Davis and Harkreader then went outside, where the victims believed they heard a gunshot. However, no firearm was found, HCSO says. Deputies later arrived at the scene and searched the area for the two suspects. Harkreader was found in the area of the residence and was taken into custody at approximately 5:50 a.m. Davis was later located at a home on Winterberry Drive in Salesville after being picked up by a motorist and was taken into custody near Boggs Drive at approximately 8:46 a.m. Both suspects were booked into the Baxter County Detention Center. Davis is being held on a $25,000 bond and will appear in court on July 21, while Harkreader is held with a $500 bond and will appear in court on August 14. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
