Warnings over defence cash squeeze
The Defence Department has cut project maintenance and training budgets by 10 per cent to save money to pay for the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines and new missiles, amid growing pressure on the Albanese government to boost military spending.
Multiple defence industry sources, granted anonymity to discuss commercially sensitive matters, warned the squeeze was affecting the Australian Defence Force's ability to keep its personnel and weapons platforms such as warships and aircraft in peak condition for a potential conflict.
