Teacher loses RM181,000 in online scam
PONTIAN: A 44-year-old teacher lost RM181,000 after falling victim to an online scam syndicate involving fraudsters impersonating insurance agents and police officers.
Pontian district police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the victim received a call in early January from someone claiming to represent an insurance company.
"The scammer told the victim her name was used in a false claim at a private hospital in Ampang.
"She was then contacted by another scammer posing as a police officer, who claimed that she was linked to 17 criminal cases, including involvement in a money laundering syndicate.
"In a state of panic and fear, the victim was instructed to make several payments to supposedly resolve the case.
"She ended up transferring RM181,000 through seven transactions to accounts provided by the scammers," he said in a statement today.
Shofee added that the victim began to grow suspicious after reading news about similar scams.
"She then informed her husband, and together they verified the details, eventually realising it was a scam. The victim lodged a police report last Friday," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Shofee advised the public to stay vigilant and informed about common tactics and methods used in commercial crimes, particularly phone and online scams, to avoid falling prey and suffering significant financial losses.
Victims are urged to act quickly by contacting the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 to block any suspicious fund transfers from being completed.

TAWAU: A dispute between two men believed to be under the influence of alcohol turned violent when one of them was stabbed outside a supermarket here yesterday afternoon. Earlier, a video of the incident went viral on social media, showing the victim lying on the ground with serious injuries. Several bystanders were seen surrounding him at the scene. The victim was later rushed to hospital for treatment.

Cops to take charge of revamped scam response centre
Malaysians lost RM1.2 billion to various scams last year. In a case last month, a 53-year-old woman was swindled of nearly RM1 million by a love scam syndicate. PETALING JAYA : The police are to soon take charge of the National Scam Response Centre, which will be beefed up with its 997 hotline open around the clock, home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said. There had been 'certain operational shortcomings' under its current structure, he said, according to Bernama. The centre was set up in 2022 as a joint venture between the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre, the police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Bank Negara Malaysia, banks and telecommunications companies. 'Under the new structure, the police will directly receive scam reports, record the necessary details and notify the relevant banks immediately to freeze the victim's account. Efforts to recover stolen funds will follow promptly,' Saifuddin was quoted as saying. The police will now be supported by the other key agencies instead. He said the restructuring will also enable NSRC's 997 hotline to be operational 24 hours daily, with the centre to get more manpower to improve its response time. Saifuddin said the proposed improvements were approved by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and will be executed soon. Anwar had said on Thursday that the centre's role would be expanded to cover all forms of cybercrime. The centre was set up in 2022 to deal with the growing number of cyber fraud cases in Malaysia, including phishing scams, Macau scams, malware attack scams, parcel scams and love scams. Last year, Anwar said in a parliamentary reply that Malaysians suffered the loss of RM1.22 billion to online scams from January to October 2024. He said the figure includes losses from various fraudulent schemes, such as telecommunications fraud, e-commerce scams, non-existent loans, love scams and fake investments.

Five students remanded in bullying case
Young suspects: The five MRSM students being remanded to assist in investigations over the bullying case in Kuala Terengganu. — Bernama KUALA TERENGGANU: Five students have been remanded to assist investigations in a bullying case at Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Besut. The three-day remand order, which expires tomorrow, was issued by Senior Assistant Registrar Yuhanis Mohd Roslan at the Magistrate's Court here yesterday. The five students, aged between 15 and 17, were remanded for investigation under Section 147 of the Penal Code, Bernama reported. Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said a Form Two student lodged a report alleging he was bullied by several Form Three students around 11.30pm on Tuesday. In a statement on Thursday, he said the boy suffered pain in his abdomen and right rib, as well as bruises on his back. The incident was discovered by a dormitory warden who informed the victim's family.
