Greek court orders pre-trial detention of Azeri accused of espionage

Straits Times25-06-2025
ATHENS - A Greek court ordered the pre-trial detention on Wednesday of a 26-year-old Azeri man charged with espionage on the island of Crete which is home to a NATO military base, sources and the Athens News Agency said.
The man, who has a temporary Polish residence permit, was arrested on Sunday on accusations of monitoring the base in Souda - a strategic facility for Greece, the United States and the NATO military alliance in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Athens News Agency said the accused man had denied the charges, saying he was a tourist on holiday to Crete with two companions.
Police acted on information from the country's intelligence service, sources close to the investigation said, adding that he had been staying since June 18 in a hotel room with a view that extended to the naval and air force base in western Crete.
During his arrest, police confiscated a high-resolution digital camera with a telephoto lens and USB sticks from his room and found that encryption software was installed on his laptop, the sources said. The evidence included videos and photographs of a Greek Navy frigate, they said.
The investigation is still in progress and authorities are investigating whether the case is linked with the arrest of a British man in Cyprus on suspicion of terror-related offences and espionage. Israel accused Iran's Revolutionary Guards on Saturday of trying to attack Israeli citizens on the island. REUTERS

Lions hooker Sheehan handed four-match ban over Lynagh foul

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox British & Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan has been handed a four-match suspension, which can be reduced to three by completing a coaching intervention, for a foul on Australia fly half Tom Lynagh in the third test in Sydney, World Rugby said on Monday. Sheehan is set to be ruled out of his club Leinster's pre-season game with Cardiff and their United Rugby Championship matches against Stormers and Sharks in September and October. He will also miss the game against Munster on October 18 if he fails to successfully complete the coaching intervention. Lynagh had failed a head injury assessment and was unable to continue after an apparent hit from Sheehan's elbow, as the Lions suffered their only loss of the nine-match tour of Australia on Saturday. Sheehan, who had initially denied any foul play, has accepted the suspension given to him by an independent foul play review committee, World Rugby said in a statement. "In determining foul play, the committee found that Sheehan's actions were reckless. The committee found that he made head contact with the Australian player, that his action amounted to a high degree of danger and that no mitigation applied," World Rugby added. REUTERS

Swindon coach Holloway vows to hunt down fan who threw seat at Walsall player

Swindon Town manager Ian Holloway was left seething after a fan reportedly threw a seat at Walsall goalkeeper Myles Roberts in a League Two match, urging the club to identify and reveal the name of the supporter involved in the incident. British media reported that an object was thrown from the crowd towards Roberts in the final minutes of Walsall's 2-1 win over Swindon on Saturday. The object did not hit Roberts but landed near him, with Holloway saying in an interview with club media that it had been part of a stadium seat. "I'm disgusted by whoever that person was. Whoever you are, you're not a Swindon fan. I'm not having you and I hope you get caught. That is absolutely horrific," said the 62-year-old Englishman. "How dare you put our club in the situation that you've just done. You think that's in our name. It's not in my name. It's not in this badge's name. And we don't want you in football. That's how I feel. "So let's find them, whoever it is. Give us a name ... If you've ripped a seat out and you've thrown it at somebody, I just can't stand you, whoever you are. And I will find you. I want us to find that person and shame them." In a statement, Swindon said they were working with Walsall and local authorities to identify those responsible. "Let us be clear: any individuals found to have engaged in such actions will face the strictest possible sanctions, including banning orders and legal action where appropriate," the club added. Oasis ‘shocked' by death of fan at London concert

LONDON - The death of a man at an Oasis concert on Aug 2 in London has cast a pall over the long-awaited reunion tour of the 1990s Britpop band, which began with fanfare in July. The concertgoer, whose name was not released, apparently fell from the upper tiers of Wembley Stadium about the time the show was winding down, based on initial assessments. 'We are shocked & saddened to hear of the tragic death of a fan at the show last night,' the band said on Aug 3 in a statement that was reported by British news media. 'Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.' The band played another concert at Wembley on Aug 3, their last show in London in August. The band's management company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Metropolitan Police said that officers working at the stadium, medics and ambulance service workers responded to reports of an injury around 10.20pm. The concertgoer was in his 40s and had 'injuries consistent with a fall', the police said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities were seeking information from the public to help them determine what happened. 'We believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage,' the police statement said. Top stories Swipe. The seating is divided into three levels, with those in the highest tier situated about 50m above ground. Some people who said they had been at the show posted about the death on social media. A person posting on Reddit as 'Nickibee' described being seated in the top tier, and said the floors were extremely wet and slippery from spilled drinks – 'like an ice rink'. Other attendees said the floors in the middle and upper tiers were also treacherous. Some noted that the timing of the man's death coincided with the end of the concert, when people might have been rushing out. Oasis have sold out their shows at Wembley and beyond. The concert on Aug 2 was the fourth of five performances scheduled there for this leg of the tour, and the band are to return for two more shows on Sept 27 and 28 Oasis were formed in 1991 in Manchester, England. The band were part of a 1990s movement called Britpop, joining groups like Blur and Pulp in producing catchy rock music with a 1960s influence. From 1994 to 2007, they produced seven albums. The band had not performed together since 2009, when Noel Gallagher, the lead guitarist, songwriter and singer, quit the group, declaring that he could no longer stand to work with Liam Gallagher, the lead singer and his brother. The Gallagher brothers' online feuding appeared to play a role in the band's continued following after it broke up. The death at Wembley on Aug 2 appears to have been the first such fatality at that arena. In 2022, a Harry Styles fan fell from the top deck of Glasgow's Ibrox Stadium but was not seriously injured. Wembley Stadium did not immediately respond to a request for comment. NYTIMES Alex Marshall and Victor Mather contributed reporting.
