Greek court orders pre-trial detention of Azeri accused of espionage
The man, who has a temporary Polish residence permit, was arrested on Sunday on accusations of monitoring the base in Souda - a strategic facility for Greece, the United States and the NATO military alliance in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Athens News Agency said the accused man had denied the charges, saying he was a tourist on holiday to Crete with two companions.
Police acted on information from the country's intelligence service, sources close to the investigation said, adding that he had been staying since June 18 in a hotel room with a view that extended to the naval and air force base in western Crete.
During his arrest, police confiscated a high-resolution digital camera with a telephoto lens and USB sticks from his room and found that encryption software was installed on his laptop, the sources said. The evidence included videos and photographs of a Greek Navy frigate, they said.
The investigation is still in progress and authorities are investigating whether the case is linked with the arrest of a British man in Cyprus on suspicion of terror-related offences and espionage. Swindon Town manager Ian Holloway was left seething after a fan reportedly threw a seat at Walsall goalkeeper Myles Roberts in a League Two match, urging the club to identify and reveal the name of the supporter involved in the incident. British media reported that an object was thrown from the crowd towards Roberts in the final minutes of Walsall's 2-1 win over Swindon on Saturday. The object did not hit Roberts but landed near him, with Holloway saying in an interview with club media that it had been part of a stadium seat. "I'm disgusted by whoever that person was. Whoever you are, you're not a Swindon fan. I'm not having you and I hope you get caught. That is absolutely horrific," said the 62-year-old Englishman. "How dare you put our club in the situation that you've just done. You think that's in our name. It's not in my name. It's not in this badge's name. And we don't want you in football. Oasis ‘shocked' by death of fan at London concert
LONDON - The death of a man at an Oasis concert on Aug 2 in London has cast a pall over the long-awaited reunion tour of the 1990s Britpop band, which began with fanfare in July. The concertgoer, whose name was not released, apparently fell from the upper tiers of Wembley Stadium about the time the show was winding down, based on initial assessments. 'We are shocked & saddened to hear of the tragic death of a fan at the show last night,' the band said on Aug 3 in a statement that was reported by British news media. 'Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.' The band played another concert at Wembley on Aug 3, their last show in London in August. The band's management company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Metropolitan Police said that officers working at the stadium, medics and ambulance service workers responded to reports of an injury around 10.20pm. The concertgoer was in his 40s and had 'injuries consistent with a fall', the police said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities were seeking information from the public to help them determine what happened. A person posting on Reddit as 'Nickibee' described being seated in the top tier, and said the floors were extremely wet and slippery from spilled drinks – 'like an ice rink'.
