Madurai Bench of Madras HC raps collector, police for inaction over caste discrimination in temple
Justice B Pugalendhi criticised authorities for keeping the temple closed since 2018 due to communal tension. 'The closure of a public temple, not for days or weeks but for years, under the guise of law and order, is a dereliction of constitutional duty,' he said. 'Stopping everyone from entering is not the way to maintain peace. The law cannot treat the oppressor and the oppressed as equals. The government must remember that peace built by denying rights is not real peace, it is surrender,' he added, slamming the collector and police for inaction.
The judge stressed that it is the duty of the HR&CE department and the state to ensure that no caste-based exclusion takes place in any temple. Citing the Kandadevi temple festival in Sivaganga, successfully conducted last year after a 17-year halt due to communal tension, he said it was possible only because the government took proactive steps, deployed adequate police force, engaged with communities, and ensured the participation of Scheduled Caste devotees.

No road, no vote: Villagers in Amethi hold protest, threaten poll boycott
Amethi, Jul 25 (PTI) To highlight their long-pending demand for better roads, residents of Nuwawa village here staged a protest by putting up a banner reading 'no road, no vote". Due to a lack of action on the matter, the villagers threatened a boycott of the upcoming panchayat and assembly elections. Amit Mishra, who led the protest, said despite over 70 years of Independence, Nuwawa village remains deprived of basic development. 'There is no proper road. During monsoon, the village gets waterlogged, and it becomes difficult to step out of our homes. We've repeatedly raised the issue with public representatives and officials, but no action has been taken," he said. As a result, the villagers have now decided to boycott the upcoming panchayat and assembly elections, he added. Sub-divisional magistrate Ashish Singh confirmed that people in Nuwawa village in Amethi tehsil staged a protest and put up a banned that read 'no road, no vote". 'It is not that there was no road earlier. A road was built, but it has deteriorated. We have received complaints regarding this. The block development officer of Amethi has been directed to take action, and the issue will be resolved soon," Singh said. Panchayat polls are scheduled next year in the state and the state assembly elections in 2027. He is also the first Indian PM born after Independence and the longest-serving from a non-Hindi state — Gujarat. Modi is also the first sitting Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi to return to power with a full majority. Modi's first tenure as India's PM started on May 26, 2014, after the BJP won the Lok Sabha elections with a majority of 272 seats. The saffron party stormed to power again in 2019 with an improved tally of 303 seats. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP failed to reach the halfway mark. PM Modi's list of honours Another historic feat by Modi is that he is India's first PM to be honoured with the highest number of international accolades. From West Asia to Europe and Africa, Modi has been conferred with 24 globally recognised honours until now. Recently, he was presented with the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the country's highest national honour, for his 'distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership.'
