Sundhage anticipates 'fantastic future' for women's soccer in Switzerland on eve of Euro 2025
The 18-year-old Barcelona forward Sydney Schertenleib is arguably the best known, but there are others as well.
Fellow forward Iman Beney was signed by Manchester City last month, and midfielder Noemi Ivelj's performances for Zurich Grasshoppers prompted Eintracht Frankfurt to sign her for the Bundesliga. Both players are only 18.
Forward Leila Wandeler, 19, was a surprise call-up by Sundhage after making her breakthrough at Lyon last season.
'Switzerland has a fantastic future,' Sundhage said Tuesday on the eve of the team's Euro 2025 opener against Norway. 'If you look at those players … the future is really great. Now we're just in the mix, so the younger players probably lean a little bit to the experienced players. Both the young players and the most experienced players are important to make that winning mix sauce.'
Swedish coach Sundhage, now 65, can herself draw on a wealth of experience to get the best from both sets of players as Switzerland looks for just its second tournament win. Switzerland defeated Iceland 2-1 at Euro 2017 and otherwise drew two games and lost three in its previous appearances.
Asked why, after successful stints in charge of the United States and Sweden, she decided to take charge of a 'smaller team' when she took the Switzerland job last year, Sundhage replied it was because of the thrill of preparing the team for Euro 2025.
'Playing the European Championship is something special,' she said. 'It's so much more than a football game. Because everything we've done and the federation have done up to now, using fantastic role models, it's a part of the women's football. And we haven't even played a game yet.'

LOS ANGELES -- LOS ANGELES (AP) — Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night needing three strikeouts to reach 3,000 for the only team he's played for during his 18-year career. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is expected to achieve the milestone in front of his home fans at Dodger Stadium — where he has 1,627 Ks — when he faces the Chicago White Sox. Kershaw will become the 20th pitcher in major league history to reach the vaunted mark. He'll join Justin Verlander of San Francisco (3,468) and Max Scherzer of Toronto (3,412) as the only active pitchers with that many. Kershaw will be just the fourth left-hander in the club. Teammate Freddie Freeman has been reminding Kershaw daily how many Ks he needs to reach the milestone even as Kershaw remains focused on trying to give the team chances to win. The White Sox have the eighth-most strikeouts in baseball with 707, and average about nine per game. Kershaw is making history at a time when he's provided much-needed stability for the Dodgers' pitching staff, which has been decimated by injuries this season. The NL West-leading Dodgers have won his past five starts. He is 4-0 with a 3.03 ERA going into his ninth start — two more than he made in an injury-shortened 2024 season — of the year. Kershaw faces the White Sox seeking his 217th career victory, which would break a tie with Scherzer for second among active players behind Verlander's 262. The 37-year-old left-hander struggled in his first start of the season when he allowed five runs over four innings in his first start after returning from knee and foot surgeries last offseason. Since then, he has held opposing batters to a .222 average. Age and less dominant stuff has changed the way Kershaw does his job. He knows his consistency isn't the same but with the depth of the team's staff, he doesn't need to be perfect every outing. Kershaw no longer overpowers hitters the way he did during the height of his career, but he remains stubbornly determined and possesses a craftiness honed over 18 seasons as well as a slider that can still fool. In his prime from 2010 to 2015, he led the National League in ERA five times, in strikeouts three times and wins twice. Kershaw had one of the best seasons ever in 2014, when he finished with a 21-3 record, 1.77 ERA and 233 strikeouts to win both the Cy Young and Most Valuable Player in the National League. This season, the Texas-born Kershaw tied the franchise record for most seasons in Dodger blue, joining outfielder Zack Wheat and shortstop Bill Russell. Kershaw's wife, Ellen, and their children Cali, Charley, Cooper and Chance will be on hand. The couple recently announced she is expecting their fifth child.

Pittsburgh pitchers extended their scoreless streak to 31 innings as the Pirates finished a 6-0 homestand that started against the New York Mets in which they outscored opponents 38-4. Perhaps deploying their maverick in a free role is best for Manchester City
One feature of the Club World Cup from a Manchester City point of view was seeing Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki play their first games for the club. Although Pep Guardiola's side went out of the tournament at the round of 16 stage with a 4-3 defeat to Al Hilal, all three players showed glimpses of their quality in the United States. But in the case of Rayan Cherki, as of right now, it isn't immediately clear where he will play for City. But watching his performance against Al Hilal, perhaps playing in a free role is the ideal role for Cherki. Manchester City may get the best out of Rayan Cherki by letting him roam. Against Al Hilal, Rayan Cherki came on at the beginning of extra time. The French international came on against a tiring Al Hilal defence. But he quickly made an impact on the match. He set up Phil Foden's goal to make it 3-all with a sublime assist. The ball he provided for Foden perfectly encapsulated what Cherki adds to City's play. He can pick out a defence-splitting ball with ease, and he figures to be an important weapon for Manchester City. But his assist wasn't the only piece of his play to catch the eye in Orlando. Advertisement The role Rayan Cherki played stood out. He played a free role and drifted where he saw fit. He dropped deep to pick up possession, and Cherki also popped up in dangerous areas in the final third. It was only a cameo appearance, but it perhaps provided a glimpse of where Cherki will be best utilised by Pep Guardiola. It will be interesting to see how Rayan Cherki is deployed by Pep Guardiola. Outside of his tremendous technical and dribbling ability, Rayan Cherki is a versatile player. He can play as a number 10 or on either wing. The French international can play any of those roles in devastating fashion. But the idea of him playing in a similar role to that of Kevin De Bruyne is potentially the one that will suit him the most. Cherki could pick his spots and get into the most dangerous attacking areas for his team. His eye for a pass, especially from deep in midfield, makes a free role for Cherki a mouth-watering prospect. The idea of him and Phil Foden alternating roles on the pitch may be the dream scenario. But in the case of Rayan Cherki alone, playing a free role may bring out the best in him as a City player. Rayan Cherki showed glimpses of what he will add to the Manchester City squad in the United States. But looking ahead, perhaps if he is unleashed to drift all over the pitch that will see him quickly become a dangerous weapon for Pep Guardiola's side.
