AL East-leading Blue Jays use 4-run second inning to beat struggling Justin Verlander and the Giants
Bassitt (10-4) allowed 10 hits, struck out five and walked none in 6 1/3 innings as AL East-leading Toronto kicked off the second half by improving to 33-16 at home.
Bassitt became the first major league pitcher in more than a decade to give up at least 10 hits and not allow a run. White Sox left-hander John Danks did it in a complete-game win at Houston on May 31, 2015.
Brendon Little struck out both batters he faced, Yariel Rodríguez worked the eighth and Jeff Hoffman finished for the Blue Jays, who have won 14 of 18. The shutout was Toronto's seventh of the season.
Verlander (0-8) allowed four runs and matched a season high by allowing nine hits in 2 2/3 innings, extending his career-worst winless streak to 16 starts. It was Verlander's shortest outing since he went 2 1/3 innings against Seattle on April 4, his second start of 2025.
Verlander started in Toronto for the first time since no-hitting the Blue Jays with Houston on Sept. 1, 2019, his second of two career no-hitters in Canada.
The veteran right-hander allowed Springer's ground ball single in the first inning, then gave up four runs on six hits in the second. He was replaced by Tristan Beck after a two-out walk to Will Wagner, Toronto's No. 9 hitter.
Wagner hit a two-run double off Verlander in the decisive second inning.
Left-hander Little replaced Bassitt with runners at first and second in the seventh. Little struck out pinch-hitter Luis Matos and struck out Heliot Ramos to end the threat.
Verlander is one game shy of matching the Giants record for consecutive winless starts, set by Mark Davis between June 19, 1984 and June 30, 1986.
RHP Logan Webb (9-6, 2.94 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Giants on on Saturday against Blue Jays LHP Eric Lauer (4-2, 2.78).

Naomi Osaka announces she is no longer working with coach Patrick Mouratoglou
WASHINGTON (AP) — Naomi Osaka and coach Patrick Mouratoglou are done working together after less than a year, the four-time Grand Slam champion announced Sunday on social media. 'Merci Patrick,' Osaka began her post, with a photo of her hitting a practice serve while he stands nearby. 'It was such a great experience learning from you. Wishing you nothing but the best. You are one of the coolest people I've ever met and I'm sure I'll see you around.' The news comes three days after Osaka lost her second match at the D.C. Open and just before she begins competing in Toronto. The U.S. Open, the year's last major tournament and an event Osaka won twice, begins in New York on Aug. 24. Osaka hired Mouratoglou — who was the longtime coach of Serena Williams — when she fired Wim Fissette shortly after her second-round exit at last year's U.S. Open. Osaka, a former No. 1, is currently ranked 51st and has a 21-11 record this season. She hasn't been past the third round at a Grand Slam tournament since winning the 2021 Australian Open. ___ AP tennis:

CJ Adams hits a leadoff homer and steals 3 bases as the Nationals beat the Twins 7-2
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — CJ Abrams had two hits including a leadoff homer, stole three bases and scored three runs on Sunday as the Washington Nationals beat the Minnesota Twins 7-2. Nationals starter Jake Irvin (8-5), a Twin Cities native pitching at Target Field for the first time, gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings. Josh Bell went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Matt Wallner homered and Harrison Bader had two hits for Minnesota, which has lost six of nine since the All-Star break. Daylen Lile tripled and scored on Paul DeJong's sacrifice fly in the fourth to put the Nationals on top 3-2. Washington broke it open with four runs in the fifth off Travis Adams (1-1), keyed by Alex Call's two-run single. Abrams hit the first pitch of the game from Twins opener Cole Sands for his 14th home run of the season. After the Twins tied it on Wallner's second-inning homer, Abrams manufactured a run for the Nationals. He led off the third inning with a single, stole second and third and scored on Luis García Jr.'s sacrifice fly. Minnesota tied it again on Trevor Larnach's sacrifice fly in the bottom half. Key moment Leading 4-2, the Nationals loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Call hit a grounder up the middle that second baseman Brooks Lee was ready to turn into an inning-ending double play. Instead, the ball skipped off the side of the mound and caromed over Lee's head for a two-run single. Key stat Abrams has five leadoff homers this year and 12 in 470 career games. Up next Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 4.14 ERA) will take the mound for the Twins on Monday as they open a three-game series against visiting Boston. The Nationals travel to Houston, where Brad Lord (2-5, 3.39) will start on Monday. ___ AP MLB:

Perkins delivers winning hit as Brewers rally to beat Marlins 3-2 and avoid sweep
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Blake Perkins singled home the winning run in the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Sunday. The Brewers erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring in each of the final two innings to avoid the sweep. The Brewers have been swept just once, in their opening series of the season at Yankee Stadium. Eric Haase hit a one-out bloop single to center off Cade Gibson (2-5) in the ninth and advanced to third on Brice Turang's broken-bat double down the left-field line. Gibson intentionally walked Jackson Chourio to load the bases. Perkins then lofted a 3-2 pitch well over the head of center fielder Dane Myers. Perkins had scored the tying run in the eighth after entering as a pinch-runner, stealing second and coming home on Andrew Vaughn's two-out, ground-rule double off Ronny Henriquez. Milwaukee's Trevor Megill (3-2) allowed a two-out double to Javier Sanoja in the top of the ninth, but right fielder Isaac Colins made a running catch of a fly ball to end the threat. Miami's Heriberto Hernández homered for a second straight game. Key moment Miami led 2-1 and had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh when the Marlins ran themselves out of an inning. Aaron Ashby picked off Myers at second base. Ashby then caught Xavier Edwards leaning off first and threw to Vaughn, who threw Edwards out at second. Edwards initially was ruled safe, but a replay review overturned the call. Key stat Chourio doubled twice and extended his hitting streak to 20 games. Paul Molitor had a franchise-record, 39-game hitting streak in 1987. The only other Brewers to have hitting streaks of at least 20 games are Davey May in 1973, Ryan Braun in 2011, Cecil Cooper in 1980 and Corey Hart in 2007 and 2010. Up next Miami heads to St. Louis for a three-game series. The scheduled starting pitchers for Monday's series opener are Miami's Edward Cabrera (4-4, 3.48 ERA) and St. Louis' Andre Pallante (5-7, 4.91 ERA). The Brewers open a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs on Monday. The All-Star pitching matchup features Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski (4-1, 2.45) and Chicago's Matthew Boyd (11-3, 2.20). ___ AP MLB:
