Inclusion comes to fore at Wicklow GAA clubs with launch of communication boards
Designed to support people with autism and other communication differences, the boards help them express themselves through the use of symbols, pictures and simple words. Energia has donated the communication boards to Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney GAA Club and Arklow Rocks Parnell GAA Club. At Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney, the board was donated on behalf of the club's U15 Girls Féile team, who Energia sponsors. Chairman of Ladies Football with AGB Eddie Tobin welcomed the move, saying: 'We're delighted to make our club a more inclusive place for everyone. 'This is a really positive step, and everyone in the club is proud to be part of a town-wide effort to create welcoming spaces. We look forward to working alongside the Arklow Autism Friendly Town Committee and educating all our coaches and members' Councillor Warren O'Toole said that the support from all sports clubs across Arklow has been incredible since the beginning of the Arklow Autism Friendly Town initiative, adding that he would 'love to see these boards rolled out in every club in the county, in fact every club across the country'. 'The Arklow Autism Friendly Town initiative continues to gather momentum, proving that when local people, businesses and organisations unite behind a cause, meaningful change is not only possible – it's inevitable.' Meanwhile, Arklow Rock Parnells GAA Club is also proudly displaying its new board, with Chairperson Jason Redmond saying: 'We're absolutely delighted with the communication board and we're looking forward to displaying it at our grounds. 'It's a fantastic resource that will help children and adults who may struggle with communication feel more comfortable and included at the club. 'We're proud to support inclusion and work alongside the Arklow Autism Friendly Town team. We would like to congratulate them on their efforts and achievements thus far and wish them well into the future.' Deirdre Hurley from Energia said that it's wonderful to see the community come together to support such a meaningful initiative. 'Energia is proud to back efforts like this that foster inclusion, understanding and accessibility. These boards represent what sport should be about—everyone being welcome,' she said.
