Afternoon Briefing: Yellow Banana gets six more months to complete city-funded grocery project
Chicago-area residents might feel like it's been a really long winter after enduring stretches of below-normal temperatures in January and February and a couple snowfalls in March. But the lingering cold snaps actually contributed to a proper winter — unlike the record highs and bitter but brief Arctic blasts of recent years.
'You look at the numbers — whether it be for Chicago, for Illinois, for the Great Lakes — and it was sort of an unremarkable winter,' said Trent Ford, the Illinois state climatologist. 'But it felt like it was intense because we're getting these types of winters, as far as temperatures are concerned, so much less frequently.'

Dave Portnoy Details Specifics of New Barstool Sports Show on FS1
Barstool Sports and Fox Sports are partnering in a deal that includes a new daily show on Fox Sports 1. Barstool founder Dave Portnoy confirmed the deal on Thursday, July 17, which will also feature his appearance on the network's Big Noon Kickoff college football pregame show. Barstool Sports will also be given a daily show from 8-10 a.m., Portnoy revealed on The Unnamed Show. Portnoy will appear on the daily show on Mondays and different Barstool personalities will also be involved. "We are going to do an 8-10 daily show on Fox Sports 1. It'll be like a Barstool breakfast show or Barstool wake-up," Portnoy said. "I'm going to do Mondays, we'll have an office in Chicago, it'll be different characters." Portnoy added that the show will cover whatever is the hot topic at the moment, whether it's sports- or Barstool-related. "So, whatever is happening and relevant to our world, but it'll be like, basically, all of our talent in the show," Portnoy added. "There will be different days people are doing it, I know I'm doing Mondays." The Barstool Sports show, which doesn't appear to have an official name yet, will be replacing Breakfast Ball, the show that was in the 8-10 a.m. time slot on FS1 previously. Breakfast Ball was one of three shows cancelled by the network recently, along with The Facility and Speak. Dave Portnoy Begrudgingly Compliments Angel Reese
There are few, if any bigger critics of Chicago Sky star Angel Reese than Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who also happens to be a huge supporter of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. However, even he had to give Reese props for her business acumen, something that has been on full display lately. Since entering the WNBA, Reese has been the center of jokes surrounding her infamous ability to grab rebounds off her own missed shots, which have been called "mebounds" by her detractors. The Sky star has taken it all in stride and recently filed to trademark the phrase and is now selling merchandise under the same name. Upon the unveiling of the Angel Reese 1 Mebounds sneakers from Reebok, Portnoy took to social media to pay his respect to Reese for turning a joke into a business opportunity. "I hate (sports sense) Angel Reese. Hate her. That's how much it pains me to admit how brilliant it was for her team to trademark Mebounds and make it her thing. Brilliant. I hate how brilliant it is," Portnoy admitted. If you go to Reese's official website, it is filled with "Mebounds" merch, including shirts, hats and even slides. Reese is also doing some good with proceeds from the sales, which will be used to "support cyber bully prevention through The Angel C. Reese Foundation." 4 CTA Red Line stops reopen after rebuilding
Commuters on the CTA Red Line on Chicago's North Side had four shiny new stops available on Sunday. A ceremonial train busted through a banner Sunday morning at the Berwyn station, above Berwyn Avenue just east of Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood, to celebrate the reopening. The Berwyn station has been closed as part of the Chicago Transit Authority Red and Purple Modernization Project since 2021. The Lawrence station, over Lawrence Avenue just east of Broadway, has also been closed altogether since 2021. Two other stops, the Bryn Mawr and Argyle stations — over Bryn Mawr Avenue and Argyle Street, and also just east of Broadway — had temporary stations open while being rebuilt. "There's a wider platform at each station. The concrete structure is going to allow for a smoother ride. They're fully accessible. There's elevators and escalators at all the station — accessible to everyone," said CTA senior communications representative Andrew Gavrilos. Gavrilos said the concrete structure is more wind and noise resistant, and there are also wider canopies at the top for weather protection. "Well worth the wait," Gavrilos said. The $2.1 billion Red and Purple Modernization Project has been replacing century-old tracks, signals, and platforms that had all reached the end of their service lives. At the Bryn Mawr station, a new entrance has also opened a block north at Hollywood Avenue. According to the Chicago - history site — which is not affiliated with the CTA, but was built by CTA historian and expert Graham Garfield, who now serves as the CTA's general manager for Red and Purple Modernization operations and communication coordination — the Berwyn stop was first constructed in 1916 as the Edgewater Beach station on the Northwestern Elevated Railroad. The station was renamed Berwyn, for Berwyn Avenue, in 1960, according to Berwyn Avenue in turn was named by developer and Edgewater community developer John L. Cochran, a Philadelphia native, for the Philadelphia Main Line suburban community of Berwyn. The west Chicago suburb of Berwyn, which Berwyn Avenue does not run anywhere near, was named for the same Philadelphia suburb by different developers. There has been a rapid transit station at Bryn Mawr Avenue, three blocks north of Berwyn Avenue, since 1908, according to Bryn Mawr is another Philadelphia Main Line suburb that got a street name in Chicago thanks to Cochran, according to the book Streetwise Chicago. The Argyle station — serving the Asia on Argyle district that was transformed in the 1970s by Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, and Chinese entrepreneurs — also dates back to 1908, according to Published reports note that community leader Charlie Soo persuaded the CTA to take on a $250,000 renovation for the station in the 1980s, and a pagoda was added in 1991. The pagoda and an "Asia on Argyle" sign were removed for the reconstruction of the station, and the CTA said it is working with the local alderperson and the community to relocate both.
