6 science-backed ways to reverse fatty liver, before it's too late

Time of India13 hours ago
With non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affecting a significant portion of adults, experts suggest adopting lifestyle changes for liver health. Reducing sugar intake, incorporating intermittent fasting, and increasing physical activity are crucial. A diet rich in protein and fiber, while avoiding refined carbs, alongside weight loss, can significantly improve liver function and reverse NAFLD, emphasizing the importance of early intervention.
Fatty liver disease has emerged as a global health concern today.
Studies
suggest that about 32% of adults have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The disease is reported more among men (40%), when compared to women (26%).
If caught early, NAFLD can often be reversed.
Here are seven evidence-based strategies to restore liver health.
Say no to sugar
Excess sugar is the biggest enemy of your liver. When you consume too much sugar, especially
fructose
(found in table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup), your liver has to process it. Over time, too much fructose overwhelms the liver, leading to fat buildup in the liver.
It can also cause inflammation and liver damage.
Excess sugar intake increases insulin resistance, which can worsen liver health and increase risk of type 2 diabetes. Cutting back on sugar, even for a month, can reduce liver fat significantly. To protect your liver, eliminate sodas, fruit juices, candied fruits, and foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup. Instead, opt for whole fruits in moderation to satisfy sweet cravings without overloading the liver.

Incorporate intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting, where you eat food within an 8–10-hour window, followed by 14–16 hours of fasting, can be beneficial for the liver. This approach triggers autophagy, the body's process of clearing damaged cells, which supports liver health. Changes such as eating an early dinner can improve liver function.
Studies
have found that intermittent fasting positively affects NAFLD through a number of different physiological pathways.
These include improved insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis, modulation of lipid metabolism, induction of autophagy, modulation of oxidative stress and inflammation, and modulation of gut microbiota. However, intermittent fasting may not be suitable for everyone, so it is important that you consult a healthcare professional before starting intermittent fasting.
Move more
Physical activity is key to reversing fatty liver, even without weight loss. A combination of cardio and strength training can make a significant impact on your health. Aim for three weekly sessions of weightlifting and three cardio workouts, complemented by 8,000–10,000 daily steps. Exercise will enhance insulin sensitivity, which will help the liver process fats more efficiently. A 2018
study
found that regular physical activity has a beneficial effect on NAFLD.
Various regimens of aerobic and resistance training have been shown to reduce hepatic fat content through improvements in insulin resistance, liver fatty acid metabolism, liver mitochondrial function, and activation of inflammatory cascades.
Add protein and fiber

Protein and fiber are essential for liver health. Protein curbs hunger, and thereby prevents overeating, which blocks fat accumulation. The fiber, on the other hand, supports gut health and reduces fat absorption.
Try to incorporate foods like eggs, fish, chicken, broccoli, oats, flaxseeds, and chia seeds.
Avoid refined carbs
Yes, you may be fond of all those chips, breads, and pastries. But if you want to reverse fatty liver, the best bet would be to cut out refined carbs from your diet. Replace them with whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice, starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes, and healthy fats from avocados, olive oil, and nuts.

Lose weight
Overweight and obesity can contribute to fatty liver. Losing just 5–10% of body weight can significantly reduce liver fat. Try to aim for a gradual weight loss through diet and exercise. This way, the weight loss will be sustainable and effective. Several studies have linked even the modest weight reduction to improved liver function.

PHED initiates new Bisalpur pipeline project for enhanced water supply

1 2 Jaipur: Even as the Water Resources Department (WRD) rolls out the Ramjal Setu Link Project (RSLP), the state Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) has begun laying the second Bisalpur pipeline to Jaipur. The project serves a dual purpose, which includes increasing the capacity to transfer Bisalpur water to the city and enabling uninterrupted supply during maintenance or repair work. With two pipelines running simultaneously, the department will be able to carry out routine upkeep and promptly address any leakages without disrupting the water flow to Jaipur. Speaking to TOI, a senior PHED engineer said, the department is in the process of selecting and awarding a work order to an agency for the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR). According to the initial plan, the new pipeline will connect the Surajpura filter plant near Bisalpur Dam and the recently commissioned intermediate pumphouse in Renwal, around 10 km away from the PHED's storage facility in Balawala in Sanganer. PHED will also augment the facility of the Surajpura filter plant, while the WRD has started works to increase the intake capacity of this filter plant from the Bisalpur Dam. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo At present, PHED has a capacity to transfer around 820 MLD (million litres per day) of water to Jaipur, of which 710 MLD is meant for Jaipur city and the rest for other areas en route. The WRD has agreed to increase PHED (Jaipur)'s share by another 400 MLD from Bisalpur, post-implementation of RSLP. "However, we have plans to commission the second pipeline with a transfer capacity of around 1,500 MLD. The 1,200-odd MLD of water is planned in accordance with the projected population of 2039," an engineer added. Officials said, the implementation of the project has already been delayed by two years. The department planned to prepare the DPR in 2023 and would start the constructions immediately after WRD initiated the RSLP or the erstwhile Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project.

Fauji Singh's stories and a phone call from him brought me out of depression: Deep Shergill

Jalandhar: Mohali-based Deep Shergill, who has been participating in and organising runs for social and health causes, attended the cremation of marathoner Fauja Singh with a dozen sports enthusiasts. She says around 2016, when she was sinking into depression, Fauja Singh's stories and a phone call from him changed the trajectory of her life. Deep, who would invariably call him "Bapu Ji" (a respectful address for a fatherly figure), said that she lost her 22-year-old brother, Karandeep Singh Shergill, in a hit-and-run case in Mohali in 2011. "When that deep wound was still fresh, due to some other personal reasons, I started sinking into depression due to a prolonged traumatic experience. In 2016, my parents asked me to take up running, and I also read Bapu Fauja Singh's story about how he took to running to overcome grief and became an icon. I wore running shoes for the first time in 2016," she said. One day, her father, Mohanbir Singh Shergill, asked her to take a phone call without telling her who was on the other side. When she picked up the phone, the voice from the other side said: "Mein Bapu Fauja Singh bol rihan (this is Fauja Singh speaking)." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "It was such a big surprise for me that I was speaking to the icon whom I adored. During the conversation, I requested him to come to Mohali to motivate people for running. He promised that whenever he next came to India, he would come straight to us. A few weeks later, he landed at our family's school in Mohali. It did not seem to be a first-time meeting, and then started such a strong association that every year we would celebrate his birthday here in Mohali on April 1, and he would come to attend. He stayed with us on some occasions," said Deep, who was accompanied by her father, uncle, and her 18-year-old niece, Ibadat Kaur, from the UK. "His granddaughters and I were planning how we should organise his 115th birthday to make it a memorable affair," she said. "As I am part of the running community, I know how much he was an inspiration for runners across the globe and how deeply they are grieving the loss, that too in an accident," she said.

14-yr-old recovers after spearhead pierces face while catching crabs in Korba

Raipur: A 14-year-old boy from Korba district sustained a life-threatening facial injury after slipping in the mud while catching crabs with a spear-like iron tool. The 17.5 cm-long tool pierced deep into his face and neck, coming dangerously close to his spinal cord. Doctors at state-owned Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital in Raipur performed a complex and delicate surgery to remove the embedded tool, successfully avoiding major complications. The boy is now recovering well. "The tool, which was approximately 17.5 cm long, penetrated about 7 cm into the boy's face and neck, reaching close to the spinal cord," the hospital spokesperson said. The boy, from Madhunara village in Korba district, was admitted to the ENT department after the accidental injury. The spearhead pierced through muscles and entered the main salivary gland (parotid gland), passing between major blood vessels in the neck and extending into the paraspinal space. Dr Hansa Banjara, Head of the ENT department, led the surgical team. "This was an extremely delicate surgery," Dr Banjara explained. "The spearhead's proximity to major blood vessels and facial nerves posed a significant risk of paralysis or severe bleeding. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo We had to meticulously navigate through the parotid tissue and around the facial nerve to extract the tool." The team carefully removed the last part of the tool, which was near the spinal cord and spinal nerves, avoiding any complications. The boy is recovering well after the procedure. Dr Santosh Sonkar, Medical Superintendent, stated, "This surgery is an excellent example of our ENT department's expertise, teamwork, and technical proficiency." The patient's family expressed profound gratitude to the surgical team, acknowledging their skill and composure during the successful operation. "Our faith in this institution has grown immensely," a family member stated. The hospital spokesperson said the boy was catching crabs in a field using the tool when he slipped in the mud and his face struck the spearhead as he fell.
