IBM's next-generation quantum computer, now online in Japan, is also connected to the supercomputer Fugaku to accelerate quantum computational power and accuracy
KOBE, Japan, June 23, 2025 /CNW/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) and RIKEN, a national research laboratory in Japan, today unveiled the first IBM Quantum System Two ever to be deployed outside of the United States and beyond an IBM Quantum Data Center. The availability of this system also marks a milestone as the first quantum computer to be co-located with RIKEN's supercomputer Fugaku — one of the most powerful classical systems on Earth. This effort is supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), an organization under the jurisdiction of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)'s "Development of Integrated Utilization Technology for Quantum and Supercomputers" as part of the "Project for Research and Development of Enhanced Infrastructures for Post 5G Information and Communications Systems."
IBM Quantum System Two at RIKEN is powered by IBM's 156-qubit IBM Quantum Heron, the company's best performing quantum processor to-date. IBM Heron's quality as measured by the two-qubit error rate, across a 100-qubit layered circuit, is 3x10 -3 (with the best two-qubit error being 1x10 -3) — which is 10 times better than the previous generation 127-qubit IBM Quantum Eagle. IBM Heron's speed, as measured by the CLOPS (circuit layer operations per second) metric is 250,000, which reflects another 10x improvement in the past year, over IBM Eagle.
At a scale of 156 qubits, with these quality and speed metrics, Heron is the most performant quantum processor in the world. This latest Heron is capable of running quantum circuits that are beyond brute-force simulations on classical computers, and its connection to Fugaku will enable RIKEN teams to use quantum-centric supercomputing approaches to push forward research on advanced algorithms, such as fundamental chemistry problems.
The new IBM Quantum System Two is co-located with Fugaku within the RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS), Japan's premier high-performance computing (HPC) center. The computers are linked through a high-speed network at the fundamental instruction level to form a proving ground for quantum-centric supercomputing. This low-level integration allows RIKEN and IBM engineers to develop parallelized workloads, low-latency classical-quantum communication protocols, and advanced compilation passes and libraries. Because quantum and classical systems will ultimately offer different computational strengths, this will allow each paradigm to seamlessly perform the parts of an algorithm for which it is best suited.
This quantum computer expands IBM's global fleet of quantum computers, and was officially launched during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 24, 2025, in Kobe, Japan. The event featured opening remarks from RIKEN President Makoto Gonokami; Jay Gambetta, IBM Fellow and Vice President of IBM Quantum; Akio Yamaguchi, General Manager of IBM Japan; as well as local parliament members and representatives from the Kobe Prefecture and City, METI, NEDO, and MEXT.
"The future of computing is quantum-centric and with our partners at RIKEN we are taking a big step forward to make this vision a reality," said Jay Gambetta, VP, IBM Quantum. "The new IBM Quantum System Two powered by our latest Heron processor and connected to Fugaku, will allow scientists and engineers to push the limits of what is possible."
"By combining Fugaku and the IBM Quantum System Two, RIKEN aims to lead Japan into a new era of high-performance computing," said Dr. Mitsuhisa Sato, Division Director of the Quantum-HPC Hybrid Platform Division, RIKEN Center for Computational Science. "Our mission is to develop and demonstrate practical quantum-HPC hybrid workflows that can be explored by both the scientific community and industry. The connection of these two systems enables us to take critical steps toward realizing this vision."
The installation of IBM Quantum System Two at RIKEN is poised to expand previous achievements by RIKEN and IBM researchers as they seek to discover algorithms that offer quantum advantage: the point at which a quantum computer can solve a problem faster, cheaper, or more accurately than any known classical method. This includes work recently featured on the cover of Science Advances, based on sample-based quantum diagonalization (SQD) techniques to accurately model the electronic structure of iron sulfides, a compound present widely in nature and organic systems. The ability to realistically model such a complex system is essential for many problems in chemistry, and was historically believed to require fault-tolerant quantum computers. SQD workflows are among the first demonstrations of how the near-term quantum computers of today can provide scientific value when integrated with powerful classical infrastructure.

CALGARY, AB, July 9, 2025 /CNW/ - Vermilion Energy Inc. ("Vermilion", "We", "Our", or the "Company") (TSX: VET) (NYSE: VET) is pleased to announce that the Toronto Stock Exchange ("TSX") has approved the notice of Vermilion's intention to commence a normal course issuer bid ("NCIB") through the facilities of the TSX, New York Stock Exchange and other alternative trading platforms in Canada and the United States. View PDF The NCIB allows Vermilion to purchase up to 15,259,187 common shares, representing approximately 10% of its public float as at June 30, 2025, over a twelve-month period commencing on July 12, 2025. The NCIB will expire no later than July 11, 2026. The total number of common shares Vermilion is permitted to purchase on the TSX is subject to a daily purchase limit of 205,865 common shares, representing 25% of the average daily trading volume of 823,460 common shares on the TSX calculated for the six-month period ended June 30, 2025; however, Vermilion may make one block purchase per calendar week which exceeds the daily repurchase restrictions. As of the close of business on June 30, 2025, Vermilion had 154,018,623 common shares issued and outstanding and a public float of 152,591,872 common shares. Any common shares that are purchased under the NCIB will be cancelled upon their purchase by Vermilion. In connection with the NCIB, Vermilion will enter an automatic purchase plan ("ASPP") with its designated broker to allow for purchases of its common shares during self-imposed blackout periods. Such purchases would be at the discretion of the broker based on parameters provided by the Company prior to any self-imposed blackout period or any period when it is in possession of material undisclosed information. The ASPP has been pre-cleared, as required by the TSX. Outside of these blackout periods, common shares may be purchased under the NCIB in accordance with Management's discretion. Vermilion has a long history of returning capital to its shareholders as we have paid out over $40 per share in dividends since 2003 and have had an active NCIB since 2022. The Company anticipates returning 40% of excess free cash flow (1) to shareholders in 2025, primarily through the base dividend and share repurchases. Share repurchases continue to screen as one of the most compelling options for returning capital to shareholders as we believe our common shares are trading at a price that does not reflect the appropriate value of the company. Under its prior NCIB, which runs from July 12, 2024, to July 11, 2025, the Company was allowed to purchase up to 15,689,839 common shares. As at June 30, 2025, Vermilion repurchased an aggregate of 5,631,463 common shares under its prior NCIB at a weighted average price of $12.96 per common share, excluding brokerage fees. AI Systems Are Advancing Faster Than Risk Controls, Warns Info-Tech Research Group in New Risk Management Resource

As AI adoption accelerates across industries, most organizations remain unprepared to manage the complex and emerging risks that come with it. Info-Tech Research Group, a global research and advisory firm, has recently published a resource that introduces a proactive, principle-based framework to help enterprises formalize their AI risk programs, improve governance, and align strategies with business objectives. TORONTO, July 9, 2025 /CNW/ - Organizations are adopting AI at a rapid pace, but many lack the necessary controls to manage the risks that come with these transformative systems. From hallucinations and bias to deepfakes and adversarial threats, AI can introduce novel vulnerabilities that traditional governance frameworks were not designed to address. To help organizations tackle these challenges, global research and advisory firm Info-Tech Research Group has recently published its research insights in the blueprint, Build Your AI Risk Management Roadmap, offering a structured methodology to develop a comprehensive, business-aligned AI risk program. As outlined by Info-Tech's AI risk management framework, failing to manage AI risk proactively can lead to regulatory violations, reputational damage, and lost value. Despite these consequences, many organizations still rely on ad hoc processes, react to issues only after they occur, or silo risk ownership within technical teams without business involvement. "AI risk is a business risk. Every AI risk has business implications," says Bill Wong, research fellow at Info-Tech Research Group. "Accountability cannot rest with AI leaders alone. Business executives must be active participants in identifying, evaluating, and responding to AI risks, and that starts with embedding risk management into governance, strategy, and decision-making processes." The firm's resource outlines how to evolve fragmented or informal approaches into a structured AI risk management program through four key dimensions: risk governance, risk identification, risk measurement, and risk response. One of the blueprint's themes focuses on aligning the AI risk framework with broader enterprise risk management to ensure the program integrates with organizational strategy and regulatory requirements. To support implementation, Info-Tech has introduced a comprehensive roadmap built around framing AI risks, establishing AI risk governance, identifying and assessing risks, measuring potential impact, defining responses, and creating a roadmap for execution. A key component of the blueprint is the formation of an AI Risk Council (AIRC), which would include cross-functional representation from IT, AI, and business leaders. This council is responsible for assigning ownership, recommending risk tolerance, reviewing risk assessments, and ensuring shared accountability across the organization. Info-Tech's framework also emphasizes the need to establish foundational AI principles, such as explainability and transparency, fairness, data privacy, safety and security, validity and reliability, and accountability. These principles, derived from global frameworks such as those developed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), serve as the ethical and operational backbone of responsible AI. Key Processes to Operationalize AI Risk Management Info-Tech's resource is designed to help organizations reduce the number of unidentified risks, build realistic contingency plans, enable cross-functional accountability, and improve regulatory compliance, such as with the EU AI Act's high-risk system requirements. It also supports better decision-making and ongoing monitoring to ensure AI systems remain aligned with organizational goals. The firm's Build Your AI Risk Management Roadmap blueprint outlines the following steps for IT leaders to operationalize AI risk management across the entire organization: Establish Foundational AI Principles – Define the ethical and operational standards that guide the development and deployment of AI. Assess AI Risk Management Maturity – Understand the current state of AI risk governance to identify capability gaps. Create and Assign AI Risk Council Responsibilities – Establish clear accountability for AI risk across leadership and governance teams. Implement an AI Risk Management Framework – Develop an AI risk management program that begins with introducing an AI risk governance program that is aligned to the organization's foundational AI principles Then determine methods for identifying and classifying AI risks, followed by establishing how AI risks will be measured and monitored, and finally adopting a strategy for the actions to take to mitigate a given AI risk. Pursue AI Risk-Mitigation Initiatives – Prioritize actions that reduce the likelihood or impact of AI risks based on feasibility and value. Build an AI Risk Management Roadmap – Translate priorities into a structured, time-bound action plan aligned with business goals. The blueprint promotes a preventative mindset, encouraging organizations to detect, assess, and mitigate AI risks before they materialize, transforming risk management from a reactive obligation into a strategic enabler. VIOR REPORTS NEW HIGH-GRADE GOLD DISCOVERY AT LAC GUILLET AREA Français

Exploration Drilling Returns High-Grade: 97.9 g/t Au over 1.5 Metres MONTREAL, July 9, 2025 /CNW/ - VIOR INC. ("Vior" or the "Corporation") (TSXV: VIO) (OTCQB: VIORF) (FRA: VL51) is pleased to announce that a significant new high-grade gold discovery has been made south of the past-producing Belleterre gold mine from its flagship Belleterre Project in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec. The newly received results also include a new mineralized zone at depth in the Hoskin Zone located north of the former Belleterre mine. Mathieu Savard, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vior, commented: "These high-grade results arrive just in time as we're expecting to start our second phase of drilling in the coming weeks. This new discovery at the Lac Guillet shear zone confirms the merits of this high potential area where close to 20,000 meters of systematic drilling is planned during the second half of the year". New High-Grade Gold Discovery at Lac Guillet Deformation Zone Drillhole BV25-141, collared along the Lac Guillet Deformation Zone, intersected: 97.9 g/t Au over 1.5 metres (at approximately 100 metres vertical depth) This interval is located on strike with the QFP-A surface gold showing, approximately 100 metres to the east, originally identified by Vior in 2022 and 2 km south of the former Belleterre Mine. The mineralization is hosted in brecciated volcanic rocks with moderate silicification alteration, accompanied by trace to 0.5% pyrite and pyrrhotite. The result highlights the gold-bearing potential on the north margin of the Lac Guillet corridor, a 250-metre-wide ductile deformation zone with limited historic drilling. Follow-up work is planned to test for lateral and vertical continuity of this zone. New Gold Zone Discovered at Hoskin Zone Drillhole BV25-143, targeting the Hoskin Zone, intersected a previously untested gold-bearing interval at approximately 400 metres vertical depth, returning: 3.0 g/t Au over 4.3 metres, including 10.6 g/t Au over 1.0 metre The mineralization is hosted in Smokey Grey quartz veins within a biotite-altered mafic volcanic unit, with trace to 3% blebby pyrite and clusters of chalcopyrite and sphalerite. This zone remains open in all directions and demonstrates the potential for depth extension within the Hoskin structural corridor. These new zones are located within a North-East striking deformation structure, reinforcing the importance of structural control in the development of high-grade gold systems at Belleterre. Maps showing hole locations and full analytical results are available at Table 1 – Drill Core Assay Results Drill Hole Number Interval From (m) Interval To (m) Interval Width (m) Au (g/t) uncut Zone BV25-141 118.5 120.0 1.5 97.9 Lac Guillet Shear - QFP-A BV25-143 476.0 480.3 4.3 3.0 Hoskin Including 478.3 479.3 1.0 10.6 Hoskin Table 2 – Drill Hole Collar Locations Drill Hole Number Azimuth (°) Dip (°) Drill Hole Length (m) UTM Easting UTM Northing BV25-141 180 -70 258.1 674954 5251964 BV25-143 300 -50 492.1 675464 5254694 Advancing Toward Phase 2 Drill Program With the completion of this first phase of drilling anticipated in the coming weeks, Vior has now drilled over 69,000 metres across the Belleterre district since 2021. The Corporation is preparing to commence its second phase of drilling, which will prioritize follow-up at both Lac Guillet and Hoskin, in addition to testing several high-potential regional and brownfield targets. In the past few weeks Vior received part of its drill permit authorizations and plans to ramp up its drilling activities back to four rigs by the beginning of August. Quality Control True widths are estimated at 65-80% of the reported core length intervals. Assays are uncut except where indicated. All NQ core assays reported were obtained by either 1-kg screen fire assay or standard 50 gram fire-assaying-AA finish or gravimetric finish at ALS Laboratories in Val d'Or, Québec or Sudbury, Ontario. The 1-kg screen assay method is used when samples contain coarse gold intervals. Selected samples are also analyzed for multi-elements using an Aqua Regia-ICP-AES method at ALS Laboratories. Drill program design, Quality Assurance/Quality Control ("QA/QC"), and interpretation of results is performed by qualified persons employing a QA/QC program consistent with NI 43-101 and industry best practices. Standards and blanks are included with every 20 samples to adhere to strict QA/QC guidelines and protocols by the Corporation and the lab. Qualified Person The technical content disclosed in this press release was reviewed and approved by Pascal Simard, Vice-President Exploration at Vior, Qualified Person as per NI 43-101.
