1984 Anti-Sikh Riots: Witness Harpal Kaur Bedi denies CBI, political pressure in Jagdish Tytler case
Congress leader Jagdish Tytler is facing trial linked with the killing of 3 Sikhs in the Pul Bangash area on November 1, 1984.
Special Judge Jitendra Singh recorded the statement of Harpal Kaur Bedi, who is the eyewitness to the killing of Sikhs in the Pul Bangash area.
Advocate Anil Kumar Sharma, alongwith advocates Anuj Sharma and Apoorv Sharma, appeared for Jagdish Tytler and submitted that it is a fake case to implicate him and there is no truth at all. The court has listed the matter on July 21 for recording the statements of other witnesses.
On Friday, in her statement, Harpal Kaur Bedi had stated that she saw Jagdish Tytler come to Gurudwara Pul Bangash and incite the mob, who later set the Gurudwara on fire.
She had stated that her husband, Amarjeet Singh Bedi, was in the business of electronics and had a showroom in the area of Pul Bangash. One of the deceased, Gurcharan Singh Channi, was their employee. Another deceased, Badal Singh, was a ragi (musician) at Gurudwara Pul Bangash.
She testified that their shop was looted by the mob. While standing near Gurudwara Pul Bangash, she claimed to have seen Jagdish Tytler arrive in an Ambassador car, accompanied by three others who emerged from the vehicle with him.
Bedi testified that Jagdish Tytler incited the mob, instructing them to loot the Gurudwara and kill Sikhs, claiming 'they have killed our mother.' Bedi stated, 'I myself have seen and heard the same from accused Jagdish Tytler.' She then identified Tytler in court during the hearing.
'I identify accused Jagdish Tytler, who is present in the Court today. After saying that, he sat in the car and returned. Accused Jagdish Tytler was a Member of Parliament and was known to my husband. He also used to visit our shop as my husband was associated with the Congress Party,' the eyewitness said.
The witness deposed that their employee, Gurucharan Singh Channi, and Sardar Badal Singh took shelter in the house of her neighbour, namely Tilakraj, in Hathikhana Azad Market.
She said, ' When it started to dawn, the mob armed with rods, gandasa and other arms broke open the door of the house of our neighbour Tilak Raj.'
She further stated that after entering the house of Tilak Raj, the mob found out the employee Gurcharan Singh Channi and Sardar Badal Singh (Ragi) and cut them with their arms.
'The mob threw both of them from the roof to the ground and thereafter, they put them in a cart (rehari) and put the tyres on them, threw them inside the Gurudwara, Pul Bangash and burnt,' Bedi recalled the incident.
She stated that she witnessed the incident herself, but did not see the third killing as the person was killed in a Gurudwara. Defence counsel Anil Kumar Sharma cross-examined the witness alongwith Anuj Sharma and Apoorv Sharma, who appeared for Jagdish Tytler.
The witness claimed that she was approached by the late Kuljeet Singh Duggal, who attempted to bribe her into not testifying against Tytler.
The witness said, 'I (Bedi) was enticed by Kuljeet Singh Duggal, who expired a year ago. The day before yesterday, too, I was threatened not to depose in the court. I have filed a complaint on July 9, 2025.'
'I know Kuljeet Singh Duggal. He was the person who visited me to entice me by offering money. He is no more and expired about a year back,' Bedi added.
She rejected the suggestion that Kuljeet Singh Duggal never visited or offered any money to her. 'It is also wrong to suggest that I (Bedi) am blaming him as he has already expired,' she said. During cross-examination, she stated that it is correct that neither she nor her husband had named the involvement of accused Jagdish Tytler until 2008.
During cross-examination, Bedi said that she kept quiet till 2008 and did not mention the name of Jagdish Tytler, as there was a threat to kill her only son. She stated that she now has no fear, as her son has died.
'It is correct that before 2016, I did not name accused Jagdish Tytler in the present case. I named him for the first time in a statement of 01.03.2016,' she added.
'My son was threatened for life by men of accused Jagdish Tytler not to state anything against him, and as I was having the only son and for the sake of his life, I kept mum,' Bedi had said.
Saying that with the passing of her son, she has no fear and stated true facts to the CBI and the court, she said, ' Now, my only son has died in the year 2015 and from that time, I did not have any fear and as such stated all the true facts to CBI and Court. I did not give any complaint regarding threat to my son till 2015 or thereafter till date.' (ANI)

"The breakdown of the legal system becomes apparent when such haste to lay a finger of blame on somebody leads to a shoddy investigation and a poorly conducted trial. The result is a loosely tied prosecution case with glaring loopholes all across and yet the courts' enthusiasm to deliver justice in such a heinous crime ensures that the accused person ends up on the death row, albeit without sufficient evidence. Examining threadbare the statement of witnesses, the apex court said they did not inspire confidence and were not reliable. "The internal inconsistencies and lack of corroboration cast serious doubts and snatch away the degree of accuracy that is to be attained while determining the culpability of an accused in cases of murder. "At the cost of repetition, we must state that the standard of proof is an absolutely strict one and cannot be faltered with. When at stake are human lives and the cost is blood, the matter needs to be dealt with utmost sincerity. Therefore, given the facts and circumstances of the case and in light of the above discussion, we cannot bring ourselves to hold the accused-appellant guilty of the charged offence as his guilt has not been proved beyond a reasonable doubt," the court said, acquitting the accused who had been in jail for the last 11 years.

Crime branch takes over probe into death of Balasore college girl
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The crime branch of Odisha Police on Wednesday took over the probe into the death of 20-year-old Balasore college girl who succumbed to burn injuries on Monday, two days after she set herself ablaze over authorities' alleged inaction regarding her sexual harassment complaint. An office order issued by crime branch DG Vinaytosh Mishra stated that he has assumed full control over the investigation into the case. The crime branch used Section 410 (A) of the Police Manual of Odisha, which empowers it to take over the investigation of a case if it is deemed to be of significant importance, organised in nature, involves political conspiracy or threats to state security, or is a case that requires high-level detective skills. DSP Iman Kalyan Nayak of the crime against women and children's wing (CAW&CW), Bhubaneswar, was made officer in-charge of the case, while inspector Panchali Rout will assist her. Police had earlier registered a case under BNS Sections 75 (1) (III) (sexual harassment), 78 (stalking), 79 (outraging modesty), 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) and 108/3(5) (abetment to suicide). Police sources said the crime branch took over the case because the role of local police had come under scrutiny as the girl said she had taken up her plight with the local police as well. Opposition BJD and Congress termed the crime branch probe as an eyewash and reiterated their demands for a judicial inquiry. Former law minister and senior BJD member Pratap Jena said, "Crime branch is very much part of the same govt system that failed the girl." Echoing similar views, Congress spokesperson Rajani Kumar Mohanty said, "Truth won't come out unless there is a judicial probe." Stating that the opposition has been resorting to cheap politics, BJP spokesperson Biranchi Narayan Tripathy said the govt is committed to ensuring the victim gets justice. "Information is being collected on those who neglected their duties. An investigation is also being conducted into those who humiliated the student and drove her to suicide," Tripathy said.

At Sadbhavna Camp, tradition of Muslims showering kanwariyas with rose petals continues
On a stretch of road that runs parallel to a mosque and a cemetery in Northeast Delhi's Jafrabad, Kawariyas dressed in saffron arrive one after the other. As they approach a camp for kanwars, named 'Sadbhavna Camp', the kawariyas chant their usual refrain – 'Bam Lahiri' and 'Bol Bam.' But at this particular camp, something is different. A group of men, wearing white kurtas and skull caps, wait at the camp's entrance with rose petals in their hands. 'Hamare kawariya bhai aa rahe hain, unka swagat kariye, unko namaste kariye, unko salaam kijiye (Our Kanwariya brothers are coming, welcome them, greet them, salute them),' a man announces. As the kanwariyas pass the camp, the men raise their arms and release the rose petals into the air. 'Hindu-Muslim-Sikh-Isai, aapas mein hain hum sab bhai-bhai… Hindustan zindabad, Hindustan ki ekta zindabad (Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, we are all brothers… Long live India, long live the unity of India),' they chant. As the petals land on the kanwariyas, for a moment, they slow down, confused. Then someone cheers, 'Jai Bholenath', and the rest join in. Inside the camp, there is chilled water, fruits, soft drinks, and shade under a blue-and-white fabric tent erected by Seelampur MLA Zubair Chaudhary. A sign outside reads: 'Sadbhavna Camp mein aap sabhi kanwariyon ka hardik swagat.' The camp was first set up in 1994 as an attempt to reduce communal disharmony in the area. It was the initiative of Chaudhary's father, Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed, a five-time Congress MLA. While the family has since shifted allegiance to the Aam Aadmi Party before this year's Delhi elections, the 31-year-old tradition of Muslims showering kanwariyas with rose petals continues. 'Before 1994, when kanwariyas used to pass from here, fights or riots would break out. They usually chant 'Bam Bam' or 'Har Har Mahadev' but because the residents here didn't understand these chants, they felt they were being provoked. The tension would carry forward to Seelampur, where Muslims were targeted in retaliation,' Zubair told The Indian Express. 'After my father became MLA in 1993, he organised the first camp the following year. He sat here with the members of the Muslim community to ensure peace. The most remarkable thing was that the entire community supported it. Thirty-one years have passed since that first camp, and there hasn't been a single untoward incident. The goal has always been to ensure that Shiv bhakts, those who bring back Gangajal from Gaumukh, Haridwar and Rishikesh, are able to walk without facing any trouble,' he added. Jafrabad was among the neighbourhoods worst hit during the 2020 Delhi riots. Memories of charred homes and lost lives still linger. But at the Sadbhavna camp, saffron and white co-exits. 'Much has been lost, but much has survived. We hope this helps heal past bruises,' said Riyaz Uddin, who has been serving at the camp for all of its 31 years. 'Every year, we sit here, handing out fruits and water to our kawariya brothers and sisters.' 'We all want to live like brothers and sisters. We want unity, we are all Indians. We shouldn't be fighting,' said Prabhat Lal, a Jafrabad resident and a volunteer at the camp. 'An initiative like this bridges gaps and builds kindness in our hearts.' A few kanwariyas leave the camp with rose petals still clinging to their shoulders. 'The journey has been long, but I don't feel tired. Faith gives me the strength to walk for miles. And this gesture has given me even more courage,' said Jitendra Shyam, a contractor from Rajasthan who is on the pilgrimage with his neighbour.
