This boutique Melbourne hotel was just honoured with a major style and design award
The StandardX – an uber-cool, industrial-style venue that we reviewed in November 2024 – is among just five hotels to receive the prestigious Style and Design Award. These are hotels that have been either "launched or refurbished with outstanding design". La Liste called the StandardX "arty, bold and unfiltered", and it shared the honour with Maison Heler Metz in France, ÖÖD Hekla Horizon in Iceland, Reschio Hotel in Italy and Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort in Indonesia.
The hotel only opened in August 2024, and is the first StandardX iteration from famed hotel chain the Standard. Described as "the rebellious younger sibling", it boasts 125 rooms over eight floors, as well as an all-day Thai street food-inspired restaurant called Bang, a rooftop bar with panoramic city views and a retail offering. Led by Melbourne-based interior design firm Hecker Guthrie, the styling elements blend the grittiness of Fitzroy with modern comforts – think rustic finishes, plenty of greenery, caramel leather couches and an epic red revolving front door.
"It's bougie, for sure, but still artsy enough to feel like it belongs to the northside," says Time Out Melbourne's food and drink writer, Lauren Dinse. "The designers have taken inspiration from Fitzroy's post-punk 'Little Band' scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, paying homage to its music venues, street art and café culture – historic pulse points of this vibrant 'hood."
The full list of 1,000 hotels included properties from Paris, London and Bangkok. This year, the ten spots to share the top gong with a near-perfect score of 99.5 include:
La Réserve Paris, France
The Connaught and The Savoy, England
Il San Pietro di Positano, Italy
Cheval Blanc Paris, France
J.K. Place Capri, Italy
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, Thailand
The Peninsula Shanghai, China
The Peninsula Chicago, USA
Rosewood Mayakoba, Mexico

Adrian Portelli delivers brutal parting shot to The Block as he shares major announcement: 'The gloves are off!'
Adrian Portelli has officially turned his back on The Block. The 36-year-old entrepreneur, who has spent millions of dollars snapping up houses over the last three seasons, shared a post to social media on Thursday revealing he was leaving the Channel Nine series for good. 'Bet my high school teachers never thought… I'D HAVE MY OWN TV SHOW ON Channel Seven,' he wrote alongside a promotional photo of him and Dr Chris Brown. 'The Reno games looking a little dusty. Time for a fresh coat. The gloves are off. My Reno Rules - Coming to Seven.' Seven recently announced the brand-new home renovation series, My Reno Rules, produced by MasterChef Australia creators Endemol Shine. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The show will feature four teams of renovators competing on two neighbouring rundown houses in Melbourne. The teams are competing for a huge prize, with a live grand finale awarding two fully renovated and furnished properties. It comes after The Block's Scott Cam sent a warning to billionaire businessman Adrian Portelli ahead of the new season's premiere. Scott begged Portelli not to attend this year's auction to give others a chance to own a home. 'To be honest we said to Adrian "we'd love you not to come next year, if that's all right." But you know it's up to him it's a public auction and he can do whatever he wants,' he revealed on Nova 96.9's Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie. 'He said he won't come but he may. We don't know, but we do want to give mums and dads the opportunity to have a crack at a block house. 'If Adrian comes and wants to buy the lot of them, well, that rules them out,' Scott said. 'Hopefully we get, a few buyer advocates that come and are representing families. So hopefully they turn up and have a bit of a crack this year.' During the 2024 finale of The Block, Portelli made history by purchasing all five of the properties for a huge $15million. He ensured Maddy and Charlotte Harry became the youngest ever winners when he bought their home for $3.5million. Portelli's company, LMCT+, has frequently raffled off properties from The Block, including last year's $5million purchase of Steph and Gian's winning home. Shortly after buying up the entire plot of homes on Phillip Island, Adrian then announced his massive 'resort giveaway' through LMCT+. Last year, he confessed to The Kyle and Jackie O Show that he doesn't even like Phillip Island and that is why he will be giving all five properties, packaged as a 'resort', away in the raffle.

Alexa added: 'This song is an absolute baddie and I can't wait for you all to hear it.' She also revealed in a statement, that music plays a major role in her life. 'Dance music has been and still is a huge part of my recovery,' she said. 'I'm obsessed. It's my soundtrack to happiness and keeps me pushing on. I have a lot of ideas in my head about dance music. 'It is so amazing, when I was in ICU, my dad got a fortune teller. They read I would go to the Paralympics, and now I'm here. Wow, I did it,' Alexa said. Alexa made headlines in 2024 when she won gold in the 100m freestyle S9 and the mixed 4x100 relay at the Paris Paralympics. She also won gold in the 100m freestyle S9 and silver in the 50m freestyle S9 at the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships in Manchester.

Eddie McGuire blasts Channel Seven star Andy Maher for being a hypocrite after he was caught up in an ugly moment at the footy with a drunk fan
Eddie McGuire has blasted Channel Seven rival Andy Maher for criticising fans who drink too much at the footy after the Front Bar host was caught up in ugly scenes at the Carlton vs Collingwood match last Saturday night. Security guards had to step in when Maher was confronted by a spectator he later described as 'pretty pi**ed' and 'munted'. On Monday, the 61-year-old commentator lashed out at fans who get drunk at games in comments that got McGuire offside. 'The last five times I've gone to the footy with the kids it [fans drinking] has been an issue and it's always been in the MCC [Melbourne Cricket Club] members, which is the troubling thing,' Maher said. 'Why do you have to come along and get yourself munted and then make a fool of yourself and ruin everyone else's experience?' McGuire hit back at Maher on Wednesday night's edition of Nine's Footy Classified show. No idea what this was about with this drongo, but bravo to Andy for keeping a level head — Adrian Sal (@adriansal80) July 21, 2025 'I was going to say something about a story that was coming up with Andy Maher, but I'll let it go until next week. I don't need to have a blue with anybody at the moment,' McGuire said. 'But if you're hosting a show called The Front Bar, don't complain about people drinking at the footy.' The Front Bar has been sponsored by beer companies since it started in 2017, first partnering with Carlton Draught, then switching to Furphy in 2023. The show features regular hosts Maher, Mick Molloy and Sam Pang drinking beers as they interview guests, who usually have a beer themselves. Daily Mail Australia does not suggest that the show does, or ever has, promoted irresponsible drinking. The vision of the Maher incident shows a man who was unsteady on his feet get out of his seat and confront the commentator and noted Carlton fan. It is not known what the man said, but he could be seen touching Maher's shoulder during the clash, as other fans yelled for security to have him removed. A woman could be seen trying to de-escalate the situation before MCG security arrived and escorted the disruptive man away. 'It was the last three minutes of the game and I noticed there were two blokes who were pretty pi**ed,' Maher said. '[Comedian] Dave Hughes was sitting four rows behind me and my attention was caught by Hughesy saying, "You can't say that to the old bloke, you've crossed the line, take it back, apologise". 'Then this bloke looked up at me and saw me sitting there and I said, "Mate, just shoosh". That was it. 'Then he came over to me and said, "Andrew Maher, I know you. You will listen to me". 'He was pi**ed and wouldn't sit down, so then he got chucked out.' The incident took place in front of Maher's daughters, who he said were 'a bit freaked out' by the fan. 'The last five times I've gone to the footy with the kids it [fans drinking] has been an issue and it's always been in the MCC [Melbourne Cricket Club] members, which is the troubling thing.' According to comments on social media from people who claimed to have witnessed the clash, Maher kept his cool throughout the encounter. '....some deranged Dees supporter was having a crack at @AndyMaher behind me. Poor bloke was just trying to watch the game with his kids,' posted an X user. 'No idea what this was about with this drongo, but bravo to Andy for keeping a level head,' replied another.
