Anti-Government Protest Set for Friday in Libyan Capital

Libya Review19-06-2025

The Sons of Souq Al-Jumaa Movement has called for a mass protest in front of the headquarters of Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbaiba.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the movement urged 'all free Libyans' to participate in a large-scale demonstration on Friday outside the Prime Minister's Office on Al-Sikka Road in Tripoli. The organisers say the protest is a response to alleged normalisation with Israel, widespread corruption, and 'crimes committed against civilians'.
'It is time to speak with one voice: No to normalisation, no to corruption, no to the government of blood and shame,' the statement read.
The group accused the GNU of 'betraying the sacrifices of the nation's martyrs' and of failing to protect civilians. It also described the government as a 'gang' that is 'selling the homeland and silencing dissent'.
The movement called on men and women, young and old, to take to the streets and demand the immediate removal of the Dbeibah government. It also called for accountability for all those allegedly involved in crimes against civilians, and firmly rejected 'any attempt to drag Libya into foreign occupation or dependency'.
The planned protest comes amid rising political tensions and public dissatisfaction with governance in western Libya. The GNU has not yet responded to the statement.
While the GNU maintains it is working to stabilise the country and hold elections, critics have increasingly voiced concerns over its legitimacy, transparency, and international alignments. Tags: DemonstrationslibyaLibyan GovernmentProteststripoli

Libya to Enforce ID Registration for All Foreign Nationals

Libya's Security and Development authorities have agreed to launch a comprehensive nationwide security and data registration campaign, following a final coordination meeting held at the office of Benghazi's Security Director, Major General Salah Houidi. The meeting brought together top officials including Dr. Jibril Al-Badri, Head of the National Development Agency, and Major General Moneim Lamhashhash, Head of the Municipal Guard, as part of broader efforts to enhance coordination between security and development bodies across Libya. The initiative will establish five main operational branches, covering Greater Benghazi, the Central Region, Southeast, Southwest, and the Eastern Region. These branches will serve as logistical and administrative centers for implementing the data collection campaign. Officials confirmed that the National Development Agency will provide full logistical support, including medical supplies and modern IT equipment, to facilitate efficient field operations and improve on-the-ground performance. The meeting comes as Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba approved the rollout of a new national security registration card, now a mandatory requirement for Arab and foreign nationals to open bank accounts in the country. The head of the committee emphasized that all expatriates must obtain this registration card, warning that those who fail to comply will face strict legal measures, including arrest, deportation, and permanent expulsion. Authorities view this campaign as a strategic step toward tightening immigration controls, improving internal security, and formalizing the legal presence of non-Libyans in the country. UN Condemns Calls for Violence Against Staff in Libya

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed deep concern over recent statements by certain Libyan political figures who, according to the mission, appear to not only endorse public protests but actively encourage illegal actions against UN staff and property. In a statement, the mission warned that 'campaigns of incitement and disinformation' could signal efforts to derail political progress aimed at holding national elections, unifying state institutions, and achieving lasting peace in Libya. UNSMIL called on all parties to uphold the peaceful nature of demonstrations, refrain from unlawful actions, and resolve disputes through constructive dialogue. The mission referenced the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations and its agreement with Libyan authorities, which guarantee the inviolability of UN premises. It urged full respect for the UN's facilities, staff, and assets in accordance with international law. The statement follows an incident last Tuesday, when protesters stormed the UN mission's compound in Janzour, west of Tripoli, shortly after UN Special Representative Hanna Tetteh delivered a briefing to the UN Security Council on the situation in Libya. Videos circulated on social media showed demonstrators demanding the expulsion of the UN mission and the resignation of the Government of National Unity led by Abdulhamid Dbaiba. In response, UNSMIL met with a delegation representing the demonstrators from the western region. The mission noted that the group voiced their frustration with the continued political and economic deterioration across Libya. Reaffirming its 'unconditional respect' for the right to peaceful protest, UNSMIL stressed its commitment to ongoing dialogue with all Libyans. The mission said it had received petitions from protesters during previous demonstrations and would continue to do so, promoting mutual respect and open discussion. Tags: Janzourlibyatripoliununsmil

Libyan Protesters Call for Anti-Corruption Rally in Tripoli

A popular protest movement in Libya's capital has called for a mass demonstration in Tripoli's Martyrs' Square on Friday, urging citizens to rise against corruption, economic hardship, and political negligence. The Souq Al-Jumaa Movement issued a powerful appeal to the Libyan public via its official Facebook page, calling on all those suffering under the current living conditions to take part in the rally. > 'To those who can no longer afford medicine… to those whose dreams were crushed by the soaring dollar… to those who lost their livelihood due to inflation… to those who are tired of endless queues, delays, and theft in the name of patriotism—this is your moment, your cause, your voice,' the statement read. The movement declared the demonstration a united stand against what it described as a 'government of corruption and normalization' that has, according to them, stolen people's rights and destroyed their hopes. The protest call comes amid mounting public anger in Libya over worsening economic conditions, declining public services, and widespread allegations of political corruption. Citizens have repeatedly voiced frustration over inflation, fuel and electricity shortages, and the devaluation of the Libyan dinar. Martyrs' Square in central Tripoli has long been a symbolic venue for popular mobilization, especially during times of national crisis. The planned demonstration reflects a growing trend of public discontent as Libya continues to grapple with political divisions and a stalled transition process. The organizers have not aligned the protest with any specific political party, instead framing it as a grassroots call for accountability and justice. Tags: CorruptionlibyaProteststripoli
