Three nabbed in RM4.7mil cockfight raid in Sabah
The raid took place on July 25 at an unnumbered lot in Kampung Kambizaan, Jalan Kayau Kambizaan.
Those arrested include a local Chinese man, an Indonesian, and a Filipino, aged between 38 and 59.
"This operation was launched to curb the illegal rearing of fighting cocks from neighbouring countries and to combat gambling activities linked to cockfighting in Sabah," Federal Police Management Department director Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said in a statement yesterday.
The joint raid uncovered 936 live fighting cocks believed to be of Philippine breed, along with 30 iron cages and 107 chicken tagging irons.
The raid involved personnel from the Papa district Criminal Investigations Department, the 16th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF), Kota Kinabalu Veterinary Services Department, and the Papar District Council.
Azmi said the three suspects were believed to be illegally importing and training fighting cocks for illegal cockfighting events, which often involve high-stakes gambling.
Among the seized items were five boxes and two bottles of vitamins, a paper bag containing Terumo syringes, a box of 100 Agani needles, and a plastic bag filled with Terumo U-100 insulin — tools commonly used for animal doping.
"The total estimated value of the seizure was RM4,684,825.20," Azmi said.
Terumo is a brand known for medical syringes and needles often used in veterinary and human healthcare.
The suspects are being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Animal Enactment 2015 for importing animals without a valid licence issued by the Veterinary Department.
Azmi urged the public to abide by all laws and report any suspicious activities that may threaten public safety and order.
From Jan 1 to July 27 July this year, the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation (WCB/PSK) conducted 179 raids nationwide, resulting in 314 arrests.
The offences included smuggling of untaxed goods, misappropriation of controlled and subsidised items, sale of imitation weapons, wildlife trafficking, and e-waste operations.
The total estimated value of seizures during this period stands at RM550.95 million.

Raid reveals work permit violations
BUKIT MERTAJAM: An Indonesian domestic worker was among 12 foreign women detained by the Immigration Department during a raid on an entertainment centre here. Its Enforcement Division director Basri Othman said checks revealed that the woman held a valid permit to work as a maid but had violated the terms by working as a guest relations officer (GRO) at night. He said further inspection showed that some of the women who were employed in factories, had overstayed their permits, and several did not possess any identification documents. 'In the operation at 1.30am yesterday, the women – three Indonesians, seven Thais and two Vietnamese – aged between 20 and 35, were found entertaining customers,' he told reporters, Bernama reported. According to him, several of the women tried to escape through the back door but were swiftly detained. Investigations found that all 12 women had been working at the premises for about six months, and were paid between RM150 and RM250 per hour. The case is being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/1963.

Seedlings are good, according to the grapevine
Compiled by ZAKIAH KOYA and C. ARUNO HOMEOWNER Ismarina Ismail, 50, planted grapevines along the edge of her yard about two years ago, not realising that she would eventually get good offers for their seedlings, Utusan Malaysia reported. 'It all started when I bought grape cuttings from a successful grower in Machang, just to try it out,' said the woman from Kampung Dalam Rhu, Kelantan. 'After eight months, it began to bear fruit, which encouraged me to plant more. 'The grapes are mainly for my family to enjoy. I took the initiative to produce grape seedlings planted in polybags and discarded polystyrene containers. 'Now, the seedlings are in high demand and frequently ordered by the public,' she added. Ismarina said the grape vines bore fruit quickly because she used organic fertiliser made from goat manure from her livestock. > The kindness and warm nature of a security guard known as Pak Cik Saad moved an entire school to tears on the day of his retirement.
