‘It is wise to stick to the attitude that works for you': Mohammad Kaif says Shubman Gill's fight with Zak Crawley charged up England at Lord's

Former India player Mohammad Kaif said that the confrontation between Shubman Gill and Zak Crawley at the end of Day 3's play at Lord's charged up an England team which had copped a lot of flak after the Edgbaston defeat. He said that England used that bust-up as fuel to motivate themselves and defeat India to go 2-1 up in the 5-match series on Monday.
'Shubman Gill's fight with Zak Crawley charged England. After Edgbaston, there were questions about their batting, bowling and captaincy. But that incident fired up Stokes and he bowled an inspiring spells. It is wise to stick to the attitude that works for you. Gill will learn this the hard way,' Kaif posted on X.
On Saturday, the fiery exchange in the final over had a lot of dramatic visuals, with India's captain Gill in the thick of it. Annoyed by Crawley's time-wasting tactics that ensured India just got in one over as opposed to two that they would have hoped, Gill ran from the slips, hurled verbal abuses at Crawley and Ben Duckett, pointed fingers, and mock-clapped at Crawley. The England openers also stood their ground, and gave it all back.

The tensions would also boil over to the next day as Mohammed Siraj sent back Duckett on Day 4. Siraj proceeded to roar right in Duckett's face, his eyes bulging out of their sockets and veins popping. There was even a light shoulder contact. Duckett didn't seem to really look at the bowler at any point while Siraj did the opposite for him. The Indian pacer even got a little talking-to from the umpires after the whole exercise.
The tensions continued into the start of the fifth day with most of the animosity concentrated in the early exchanges, in which Jofra Archer dismissed Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar in a devastating early spell. Archer had donned the role of the pantomime villain in that period. He made sure to give send-offs to both the players that he dismissed. Even after he was taken off the attack, Archer remained in the batsmen's faces, having some words with Nitish Kumar Reddy, notably. Brook could also be heard telling Reddy from the slips that he is no longer playing in the IPL.
Reddy also had a few words with Stokes but arguably the biggest flare-up was between Brydon Carse and Ravindra Jadeja about four overs before Lunch. Jadeja ran right into Carse while running the first of the two runs the batters ran off the last ball of that over. Stokes came in between to break the two players up. Both players seemed to be telling each other that they didn't do it on purpose and to be fair to them, they did look like they were blissfully unaware of each other before colliding in the replay of the incident.
England won the Test by 22 runs but that was only after they dealt with 50 overs and one delivery of resistance from India's last three wickets, anchored by Jadeja who stayed unbeaten on 61 off 181 balls.

Massive prediction! KL Rahul tipped to eclipse Shubman Gill soon

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul (Getty Images) Former England cricketer Owais Shah has lauded KL Rahul , predicting that the stylish Indian batter is set to thrive now that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have stepped away from the Test setup. Taking on the responsibility of opening, Rahul has already made a strong impression, compiling 375 runs in six innings at an average of 62.50, including multiple centuries. With a more prominent position in the batting order, Rahul has taken on the challenge of guiding the innings and offering consistency at the top. Shah feels that Rahul, who often played in the background while Kohli was leading the charge, now has the chance to emerge as India's primary batting pillar — even ahead of the in-form Shubman Gill . Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "I think he's been in the shadow of Kohli. With Kohli at the crease, he was always going to be your main batsman and Rahul was under the radar. But this is his time to flourish. This is the first series without Virat Kohli. Look at the batting order, yes Shubman Gill has done really well, I wasn't expecting it. I did not think he had it in him to do what he's done so far," Shah remarked on the Beard Before Wicket podcast. Rahul's recent century at Lord's wasn't just significant in match terms; it etched his name into history, making him only the second Indian — after Dilip Vengsarkar — to be listed more than once on the Lord's honours board. Nevertheless, despite Rahul's performances, India currently trail England 1-2 in the five-match Test series. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Divya Deshmukh Shocks Jiner Zhu In FIDE World Women's Chess Cup

Last Updated: Divya Deshmukh defeated second seed Jiner Zhu in the pre-quarterfinals of the FIDE World Women's Chess Cup. Koneru Humpy, D Harika, and R Vaishali drew their games. Indian International Master Divya Deshmukh made significant progress by defeating second seed Jiner Zhu of China in the first game of the pre-quarterfinals of the FIDE World Women's Chess Cup on Wednesday. Divya, rejuvenated after the event's first rest day, outplayed the much higher-ranked Zhu and now needs only a draw in the return game to reach the quarterfinals. Zhu opted for a Sicilian defense, which was met with an original response from Divya. She gained control in the center and gradually strengthened her position. Although Zhu is known for her resilience, her attempt to create counterplay towards the end of the first time-control proved risky, allowing Divya to convert to a superior Queen and minor piece endgame. With her Queen and knight creating havoc, Divya secured an important victory without any trouble. What About Other Indians In The Fray? Top-rated Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy played out a hard-fought draw with former world women's champion Alexandra Kosteniuk of Switzerland. Humpy's Berlin defense provided an optical advantage to Kosteniuk, but the Indian held her ground to split the points. D Harika played an enterprising game but settled for a draw with Kateryna Lagno, who is competing under the FIDE flag. Harika sacrificed a couple of pawns, but her Bishop pair always provided enough play for the lost material. Another Indian contender, R Vaishali, signed the peace treaty with Meruert Kamalidenova of Kazakhstan. Vaishali did not gain much from the opening, and all minor pieces were exchanged, keeping the position level in the ensuing heavy pieces situation. The draw was a fair result. Among other prominent players, top seed Tingjie Lei of China defeated Umida Omanova of Uzbekistan, while the remaining Chinese competitors, Zhongyi Tan and Yuxin Song, also began with victories against Yulia Osmak of Ukraine and local hopeful Lela Javakhishvili, respectively. The event is now intriguingly poised with four Chinese and four Indians remaining. The top three finishers will secure a berth in the next Women's Candidates' tournament. In each round except the finals, players compete in two games under Classical time control, and in case of a tie, shorter duration games are used to determine the winner. Results round 4 game 1: R Vaishali (Ind) drew with Meruert Kamalidenova; Alexanndra Kosteniuk (Sui) drew with Koneru Humpy (Ind); Kateryna Lagno (Fid) drew with D Harika (Ind); Divya Deshmukh (Ind) beat Jiner Zhu (Chn); TIngjie Lei (Chn) beat Umida Omanova (Uzb); Yuxin Song (Chn) beat Lela Javakhishvili (Geo); Mariya Muzychuk (Ukr) drew with Nana Dzagnidze (Geo); Zhongyi Tan (Chn) beat Yulia Osmak (Ukr). view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 22:51 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
