Gilbert Burns: 'Unbelievably strong' Dricus Du Plessis beats Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319

USA Todaya day ago
ABU DHABI – Gilbert Burns has experience hitting the mats with both Dricus Du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev.
Middleweight champion Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) defends his title against Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).
Burns gave Chimaev arguably his toughest test to date when he pushed him to the brink in an all-out war at UFC 273. The former title challenger has also trained with Du Plessis before, so was able to give insight on their championship fight.
"It's a very tough fight," Burns told MMA Junkie. "Dricus is a monster. I trained a lot with Dricus when he was at Hard Knocks, unbelievably strong for that division, very big too, crazy gas tank. He looks tired, you look at him, 'Oh, he's getting tired,' but he's not. Hits very hard, does both stances, grappling defense is get a lot better. I think right now he's going to focus on that to not get submitted.
"And guess what? If Chimaev doesn't finish him in the first, or give him one more round, the second round, I don't think he can. I think it's going to be a long night, and Dricus can keep coming, keep coming. He gets stronger as the rounds are going. The guy doesn't quit, he doesn't break so, I got to go with Dricus on that one."
Although Chimaev has opted for a different look this camp by working with Sam Calavitta for his strength and conditioning, Burns doesn't see it making a difference.
"He just got in the U.S. three, four weeks ago, I don't think it's going to be enough," Burns said. "Maybe even pushing too hard right now, it might be breaking him. When I saw that I said maybe, but when I saw the timing, I don't think so. I think Dricus is winning that one."

UFC on ABC 9 video: Steven Nguyen makes history, deforms Mohammad Yahya's face

Steven Nguyen made history Saturday – at the expense of Mohammad Yahya's face. On the UFC on ABC 9 prelims, Nguyen (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) dropped Yahya (12-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) a record-breaking six times. The fight was stopped between Round 2 and Round 3 due to Yahya's grotesquely swollen eye. The fight took place at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Yahya hung tough throughout the beatdown, but the human body (or in this case, face) can only take so much. The swelling escalated around the final knockdown, which took place in Round 2. When his face was shown on the big screen between rounds, his distorted face got an audible reaction from the crowd. Nguyen picks up his first UFC victory in what was his first fight since his debut in March 2024. The Fortis MMA product moves to 4-1 in his most recent five. Yahya could be on the chopping block after coming up empty-handed three times in as many UFC fights. Up-to-the-minute UFC on ABC 9 results Steven Nguyen def. Golden State Warriors reportedly hold \

The Golden State Warriors are yet to make an addition to the roster this summer. Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Joe Lacob are likely tied up in negotiations with Jonathan Kuminga, whose unrestricted free agency has turned into the biggest saga of the offseason. According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, Seth Curry is drawing "mutual interest" with the Warriors. Adding the sharpshooter would put both Curry brothers on the same team, while also giving Steve Kerr's second unit one of the most trusty sharpshooters the NBA has to offer. "They want some extra shooting," Slater said via a recent episode of ESPN's NBA Today. "And another name i'm hearing, with mutual interest, Seth Curry as a potential bench shooting option with a family ties." Curry played in 68 games for the Charlotte Hornets last season, averaging 6.5 points and 1.7 rebounds per outing. However, it was his efficiency that caught the eye, with him shooting 45.6% from deep on 2.7 attempts each game. He also shot 50.3% from 2-point range. The Warriors would likely welcome some additional floor spacing off the bench. Furthermore, Curry could be available at the minimum, which would make him a cost-controlled addition with significant upside. Of course, other teams around the NBA could also covet the shooting he brings, so it will remain to be seen whether the Warriors firm up their reported interest and sign him to a year in the Bay Area.
